Brazil stops releasing Covid-19 death toll and wipes data from official site
Health ministry insiders told local media the move was ordered by far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, himself – and was met with widespread outrage in Brazil, one of the world’s worst-hit Covid-19 hotspots, with more deaths than Italy and more cases than Russia and the UK.
“The authoritarian, insensitive, inhuman and unethical attempt to make those killed by Covid-19 invisible will not succeed. We and Brazilian society will not forget them, nor the tragedy that befalls the nation,” said Alberto Beltrame, president of Brazil’s national council of state health secretaries, in a statement.
Brazil currently has the world’s second-highest number of cases, at 672,846, according to the John Hopkins university site, and has overtaken Italy, with 35,930 deaths. John Hopkins removed Brazil from its global count on Saturday but later reinstated it.
Colin Powell endorses Joe Biden for US president
Powell, who led the US military during the 1991 Gulf War in Iraq under Republican former President George HW Bush and later led the Department of State under President George W Bush, said Trump has “drifted away” from the US Constitution and “lies about things”.
“I was deeply troubled by the way in which he was going around insulting everybody,” Powell told CNN. “Insulting Gold Star mothers, insulting John McCain, insulting immigrants, and I’m a son of immigrants. Insulting anybody who dared to speak against him.”
“I cannot in any way support President Trump this year,” Powell, who did not vote for the Republican president in 2016, told CNN. Asked if he would vote for Biden, he added: “I will be voting for him.”

Libyan government defies Russian warnings with plans to take eastern sites
Libya’s resurgent UN-recognised government has said it will defy any Russian warnings and press ahead with the capture of at least two more strategic sites in the west of Libya, with the aim of preventing Russia from setting up an airbase in the country. It made the announcement as oil production restarted in Libya after being shut down since January.
The UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), supported by Turkey, said it intended to press ahead with the capture of both the coastal town of Sirte and the al-Jufra airbase currently housing 14 Russian MiG-29s and Su-24s.
Libya’s previously deadlocked civil war has been transformed over the past week by the retreat of the Russian-backed forces of General Khalifa Haftar, the military leader in the east.

Fresh protests in Kashmir after Indian forces kill nine rebels
Anti-India protests have continued for a second day on Monday in Indian-administered Kashmir after the Indian forces killed at least nine rebels in the disputed region.
The rebels, including three commanders, were killed in separate gunfights with the security forces in Shopian district, some 70km (43 miles) south of the capital, Srinagar. The fighting began on Sunday.

GNA vows to retake Libya's east after Sirte offensive
Libya's internationally-recognised government has promised to retake the country's east after launching an offensive to capture the strategic city of Sirte from the eastern-based forces of renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar.
On Saturday, forces allied with the Government of National Accord (GNA) launched the offensive to seize Sirte, a key gateway to the country's main oil fields in the east, from Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA) forces which took the city in January.
Protest in southwest Syria against faltering economy, corruption
Dozens of Syrians took to the streets in southwest Syria to protest deteriorating economic conditions and corruption in the country, according to reports by local media run by activists in the area.

Elle remplace une loi de 2007, le Human Security Act, dotée d’un garde-fou juridique qui permettait de condamner les policiers jusqu’à 8 500 euros par jour d’amende en cas de détention abusive. Cette clause a été supprimée dans la nouvelle loi.

The 9,500 soldiers slated to move would be assigned back home or to Poland and other allied nations.
The US currently has 34,500 troops in Germany. The move would cut down US troop numbers in Germany to 25,000. Around 17,000 US American employees support US troops in Germany, Reuters news agency reported.

New York City and Chicago lifted curfews on Sunday, following a weekend of protests against racism and police brutality. The move came as several city governments are seeking to defuse tensions and have responded to protesters' demands by promising reform.
Activists and protesters have rallied behind calls to "defund the police," a criticism of what they see as a pattern of pouring more resources on police departments than on other city services, including housing and education.

Germany, France lead new EU engagement with China
Amid the ongoing pandemic, some European countries have changed their views of China - also due to US influence. This has increased the difficulty of work Germany and France will have to do to coordinate the 27 EU member states. The bloc needs to reach a consensus in terms of policies and strategies toward China. This is important for the EU, but it is not an easy task in the short term, especially with the discords sowed by the US.
However, there is a hindrance to the big two's efforts - certain countries are misleading the EU. The US is politicizing anything related to China and it has affected some European countries. Nonetheless, Europe will eventually avoid falling into this trap and maintain a balance between China and the US. After all, the bloc doesn't want to become a pawn of the US.

Como toda dictadura, la que gobierna Bolivia, con Jeanine Áñez a la cabeza, le impuso a la sociedad de ese país un cerco comunicacional desde el primer minuto de consumado el golpe contra Evo Morales. Sin embargo, ese férreo control no logró impedir que salgan a la luz hechos de este gobierno ilegal a través de las redes sociales. Este fue el caso de los sospechosos y reiterados vuelos del avión presidencial boliviano hacia Brasil que, en un primer momento, el gobierno inconstitucional buscó negar. Sin embargo, los datos que surgen de la empresa norteamericana de seguimientos de vuelos FlightAware, a la que accedió Página/12, demuestran que el aeronave estuvo en Brasilia en la madrugada del primer día del golpe, el 11 de noviembre de 2019. El gobierno de Jair Bolsonaro es uno de los pocos aliados que tiene Áñez y el mandatario brasileño, junto al entonces presidente Mauricio Macri, fue de los que negó la existencia de un quiebre institucional en Bolivia.

Trump ordenó la retirada de la Guardia Nacional de Washington
El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, ordenó el inicio de la retirada de la Guardia Nacional de Washington, la capital del país, por considerar que "todo está perfectamente bajo control", luego de la multitudinaria protesta pacífica del sábado por el asesinato de George Floyd . La presencia de la Guardia Nacional fue un motivo de tensión permanente entre Trump y la alcaldesa de Washington, la afroamericana demócrata Muriel Bowser, quien describió el operativo desplegado como una "invasión". El mandatario estadounidense también arremetió contra los demócratas, aunque particularmente contra el candidato presidencial Joe Biden por exigir una reforma estructural de las fuerzas de seguridad.

Multitudinarias marchas a favor y en contra de Bolsonaro
Brasileños salieron a las calles este domingo en São Paulo y Brasilia para manifestarse a favor y en contra el presidente de ultraderecha Jair Bolsonaro, en medio de críticas a la gestión del gobierno por el avance del nuevo coronavirus.
Cientos de personas caminaron con percusión y bengalas hacia el paseo de los ministerios en Brasilia a media mañana para expresarse contra Bolsonaro. “Todos por la democracia”, “contra el racismo y el fascismo” y “terrorismo es la política de exterminio del gobierno” proclamaban algunas de las pancartas cargadas.

El líder opositor Juan Guaidó está en la embajada de Francia en Caracas, dijo el canciller de Venezuela, Jorge Arreaza, tres días después de que el presidente socialista Nicolás Maduro insinuara que el dirigente parlamentario está "escondido" en una sede diplomática.
"Nosotros no podemos ingresar a una residencia de una embajada de cualquier país, en este caso de España o de Francia, y que la justicia se (los) lleve por la fuerza.
