Iran mourns Suleimani as fallout intensifies over US strike

Huge crowds have brought central Tehran to a standstill as mourners flooded the Iranian capital to pay a homage to Suleimani, the commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ powerful Quds Force.

Late on Sunday, Donald Trump defended his threat to target Iranian cultural sites if Tehran retaliates for the killing of Suleimani. The US president also lashed out at Iraq following its parliament’s demand for American troops to be expelled from that country, and vowed to respond with crippling sanctions.

Over the weekend the Trump administration scrambled to justify its claim that the killing of Iran’s most powerful general was about stopping a war rather than starting one, as tensions spiralled by the hour.

Later on Monday Nato ambassadors will meet at their Brussels headquarters to discuss the killing, surprised many of Washington’s allies and triggered calls for de-escalation.

Al-Shabaab kills three Americans in attack on US military base in Kenya

The attack on the Manda Bay airfield early on Sunday was the al-Qaida-linked group’s first attack against US forces in the East African country, and the military called the security situation “fluid” several hours after the assault.

One US serviceman and two contractors with the US Department of Defense were killed in the fighting, according to a statement from the US Africa Command, or Africom

Al-Shabaab claimed that there were 17 US casualties, nine Kenyan soldiers killed and seven aircraft destroyed.

Russia announces plan to ‘use the advantages’ of climate change

The document, published on the government’s website on Saturday, outlines a plan of action and acknowledges changes to the climate are having a “prominent and increasing effect” on socioeconomic development, people’s lives, health and industry.

Russia is warming 2.5 times faster than the planet as a whole, on average, and the two-year “first stage” plan is an indication the government officially recognises this as a problem, even though Vladimir Putin denies human activity is the cause.

The plan says climate change poses risks to public health, endangers permafrost, and increases the likelihood of infections and natural disasters. It also can lead to species being pushed out of their usual habitats.

Possible “positive” effects are decreased energy use in cold regions, expanding agricultural areas and navigational opportunities in the Arctic Ocean.

Mourners flood Tehran as calls for revenge over Soleimani grow

Iran's leaders join massive crowds in the capital for the funeral procession of top commander assassinated by the US.

Brigadier-General Esmail Qaani, the new commander of Quds Force and Soleimani's successor, was also in attendance.

"We promise to continue martyr Soleimani's path with the same force ... and the only compensation for us would be to remove America from the region," state radio quoted Qaani as saying.

The Islamic Republic's supreme leader pledged "severe revenge" while other pro-Iran figures in the region, including the head of Lebanon's Hezbollah movement Hassan Nasrallah, have also promised retaliation.

Though it is unclear how or when Iran may respond, any response is likely to come after the conclusion of a three-day mourning period.

Erdogan: Turkish soldiers gradually being deployed to Libya

Deployment aimed at backing GNA follows signing of agreements between Ankara and Tripoli-based government.

Sunday's announcement comes days after Turkey's parliament approved the deployment of troops in Libya after it received a request for military support from the GNA, headed by Fayez al-Sarraj.

The GNA's request came as it fends off a months-long offensive by renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar's eastern-based forces, which have received support from Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

He said Turkey would not be deploying its own combat forces. "Right now, we will have different units serving as a combatant force," he said, without giving details on who and how many the fighters would be, as well as where they would come from.

Venezuela's Guaido blocked from Congress in crucial vote

Troops blocked some opposition legislators from parliament as a vote on the new parliament speaker took place.

Luis Parra was sworn-in as the new speaker of Venezuela's National Assembly on Sunday after security forces prevented opposition leader Juan Guaido and other MPs from entering the building, prompting them to hold their own election for chief of Congress.

Juan Romero, a member of Venezuela's PSUV party in the state of Zulia said the move only reflected the divisions within the opposition parties.

"This situation will end fragmenting more the current opposition, and shows the failure of a strategy," Romero told Al Jazeera.
