Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, ISIS Leader Known for His Brutality, Is Dead at 48
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the cunning and enigmatic black-clad leader of the Islamic State who transformed a flagging insurgency into a global terrorist network that drew tens of thousands of recruits from 100 countries, has died at 48.
His death was announced on Sunday by President Trump, who said al-Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest during a raid this weekend in northwestern Syria by United States Special Forces. Mr. Trump said preliminary tests had confirmed his identity.
There was no immediate confirmation from the Islamic State’s media arm, which typically is quick to claim attacks but generally takes longer to confirm the deaths of its leaders.

Watching the Raid Was Like a Movie, the President Said. Except There Was No Live Audio.
WASHINGTON — In describing the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Sunday, President Trump used dramatic, even cinematic language to portray the daring American commando raid that brought down the Islamic State leader who, the president said, died “screaming, crying and whimpering.”
Mr. Trump described the video footage he watched from the White House Situation Room as “something really amazing to see.” The experience, the president said, was “as though you were watching a movie.”
What the president saw, according to military and intelligence officials, was overhead surveillance footage on several video screens that, together, provided various angles from above, and in real time. The videos included heat signatures of those moving around — which analysts labeled friend or foe — at the al-Baghdadi compound near Idlib, Syria.

In Argentina Election, Leftists Savor Victory Over Incumbent
BUENOS AIRES — Argentines on Sunday entrusted leftists to steer the nation as it reels from a deep recession, electing as president Alberto Fernández, a longtime political operative who toiled behind the scenes most of his career.
His victory was masterminded by former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, a deeply polarizing leader who opted not to try for a comeback term as president, settling instead for the No. 2 spot on the ticket.
With more than 80 percent of the ballots counted, Mr. Fernández had carved out a lead large enough to avoid a runoff with President Mauricio Macri, a center-right politician who failed to deliver on a promise that free-market policies would drive economic growth. Mr. Fernández was leading with more than 47 percent of the vote; Mr. Macri lagged behind with 41 percent.

Argentina election: Macri out as Cristina Fernández de Kirchner returns to office as VP
With almost 70% of the vote counted, Fernández, who is no relation of Fernández de Kirchner, recorded a 47% victory against Macri’s 41%.
The victory puts an end to the pro-business economic policies of Macri’s administration, who promised “zero poverty” during his electoral campaign but exits office with a plunging peso, an inflation rate that rocketed to an annual 56% and the number of people living beneath the breadline having risen from 29% to 35%.

Trump says IS leader killed in U.S. military operation in Syria
WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday the Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been killed in a U.S. military operation in Syria. Speaking in the White House, Trump said U.S. Special Operations Forces conducted a raid Saturday night targeting al-Baghdadi in northwest Syria, during which al-Baghdadi killed himself by igniting a suicide vest.
"Last night, the United States brought the world's number one terrorist leader to justice. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead," he said. The death of al-Baghdadi demonstrates the U.S. commitment to "the enduring and total defeat of ISIS (the IS) and other terrorist organizations," Trump added. Al-Baghdadi, 48, whose real name was Ibrahim Awad al-Badri, announced the establishment of a caliphate, or the so-called Islamic State, in June 2014. In 2016, the U.S. Department of State offered a reward of up to 25 million U.S. dollars for information leading to his capture or death.

Iran says death of IS leader should end "U.S. intervention in Middle East"
TEHRAN, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- "The death of Islamic State (IS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi should end U.S. interventions in the Middle East," Iran's government Spokesman Ali Rabiee was quoted as saying by Press TV on Monday. "Washington's policies are the main reason for the proliferation of terror outfits in the region," Rabiee said.
He also said that al-Baghdadi's death is the end of a symbol of "destructive terrorism," however, his death cannot be interpreted as an end to the ideology of extremism, like IS. The U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday morning in a televised address at the White House that the IS leader al-Baghdadi was killed by the U.S. forces' raid on his compound in northern Syria.

Iraq declares curfew amid ongoing mass anti-government protests
Two protesters reported dead and 105 wounded as authorities say night-time curfew to be in place 'until further notice'.
The renewed protests came weeks after an earlier wave of rallies broke out as a result of widespread anger at high-level corruption, mass unemployment and poor public services. More than 200 people have been killed in this month's demonstrations in Baghdad and several southern cities.
Earlier in the day, at least two anti-government protesters were reportedly killed and more than 100 people were wounded in clashes with security forces in Baghdad as thousands of students joined in the demonstrations in defiance of a government order and tear gas from security forces.
The moves have done little to quell the demonstrators, however, whose ire is focused not just on Abdul Mahdi's administration but also Iraq's wider political establishment, which they say has failed to improve the lives of the country's citizens.
EU agrees to delay Brexit until January 31
Brexit deadline has been changed for second time since the 2016 referendum on Britain's departure from the EU.
Tusk's announcement came as European Union diplomats met in Brussels to sign off on the new delay to Britain's departure from the bloc, which had been due in just three days, on October 31.
According to a copy of the agreement seen by the AFP news agency, if Prime Minister Boris Johnson convinces the UK parliament to approve an amicable divorce accord before next year, Brexit could be on November 30 or December 31.
On Monday, however, European diplomats told AFP they would wait no longer and would make a decision without further delay after Britain agreed it would not try to change the withdrawal deal.
French President Emmanuel Macron had been the main hurdle to an extension, arguing there had to be a good reason for a delay and that the British needed to break their own political deadlock. But a source close to Macron said the prospect of an election in Britain had strengthened significantly.

Lebanese protesters set up barricades, block main roads
Major routes closed off by hundreds of vehicles, groups of protesters sitting on roads.
Demonstrators in Lebanon have set up barricades and parked cars across key roads in the capital Beirut and elsewhere in the country as part of the ongoing anti-government protests aimed at forcing the resignation of all political leaders.
In a rare show of solidarity, Lebanese from all walks of life and of different religious backgrounds took to the streets on October 17 to demand the resignation of all politicians, who they accuse of mismanagement, wasting public funds and rampant corruption.
