Israel Strikes After Rockets Are Fired From Gaza to Tel Aviv

JERUSALEM — Two rockets were fired at Tel Aviv from the Gaza Strip on Thursday — the first time since 2014 that rockets had reached the area — in an attack that led to retaliatory airstrikes by Israel hours later.

Israel blamed Hamas, the Islamic militant group that controls Gaza, for the rocket fire, but by Friday morning, the assessment of Israeli military officials, also widely reported in the Israeli media, was that Hamas operatives had launched the rockets “by mistake.”

Israel’s Iron Dome missile-defense system detected the incoming rockets around 9 p.m. and sounded alarms that were heard across metropolitan Tel Aviv on a rainy night. No injuries or damage were reported, but residents reported hearing loud blasts and the mayor ordered bomb shelters opened.

A Taliban Leader, Eyeing U.S. Peace Deal, Speaks to Afghans’ Fears

DOHA, Qatar — In a sign that the Taliban see a peace deal with the United States as imminent, one of their top leaders released a rare audio message on Thursday seeking to ease the concerns of the insurgency’s own fighters — and those of Afghans who fear that an agreement could let the Taliban return to power and roll back human rights.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a deputy Taliban leader who was recently freed from a Pakistani cell to lead the talks with the Americans in Qatar, said in the message that he was “very hopeful” that the discussions that ended Tuesday could help end a war that has dragged on for 18 years.

“We had the kind of talks that have created the opportunity to resolve things and find a solution in the future,” Mullah Baradar said.

His message was a window into the internal politics of the Taliban, who are stuck in a deadly stalemate with the Afghan security forces, despite essentially controlling more Afghan territory than at any time since 2001, when the American invasion ousted them from political power.

America’s Escalating Air War in Somalia: How Did We Get There?

Where is the United States at war? It’s a hard question to answer. Inevitably though, at least in the last four years, this sentence has changed little: American troops are fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. But with a steady stream of airstrikes, militant deaths, alleged civilian casualties and two American troops killed in Eastern Africa since 2017, another country has since crept onto the list: Somalia.

And despite documentation that quantifies the Pentagon’s efforts in Somalia, there is no public record of the C.I.A.’s activities in the country, including if it has its own drone program to search for and to kill Shabab militants. But the agency is undoubtedly intertwined with the military’s efforts in the region, according to defense officials, often piggybacking off American outposts and American-backed militias to support their own clandestine activities.

Afghan War Casualty Report: March 8-14

At least 74 pro-government forces and 26 civilians were killed in Afghanistan during the past week. The deadliest attack took place in Badghis Province, where the Taliban completely wiped out an Afghan army company, killing 16 soldiers and taking 40 others prisoner. Thirteen civilians were killed by American airstrikes in the district of Hesarak in Nangarhar, and six Afghan soldiers were killed in an American airstrike in Oruzgan Province, after Afghan soldiers targeted a joint convoy of Afghan and American forces. Officials later called the incident “a mistake between forces.”

Rockets fired from Gaza target Tel Aviv for first time since 2014

Militants in Gaza have fired two rockets towards Tel Aviv, the first such attack since the war between Israel and Hamas in 2014. Israel has responded by attacking what it called “terror sites” in Gaza.

There were no reports of damage or casualties, the Israeli army said, and no group in Gaza immediately claimed the attack, but in a statement, Hamas’s military wing denied responsibility for the attack.

MPs back Brexit delay as votes lay bare cabinet divisions

Brexit is set to be delayed by at least three months, after parliament opted overwhelmingly to request an extension to article 50 on another day of divisive votes that exposed the split in Theresa May’s cabinet.

The prime minister is now expected to bring her twice-defeated Brexit deal back to parliament on Tuesday, after she narrowly retained control of the next steps of the process.

AL JAZEERA North Korea may suspend talks with 'gangster-like' US: Diplomat

Pyongyang's senior diplomat tells Russia's Tass news agency that North Korea may rethink ban on missile tests.

North Korea is considering suspending talks with the United States and may rethink a ban on missile and nuclear tests unless Washington makes concessions, news reports from Pyongyang have said quoting a senior diplomat.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton "created the atmosphere of hostility and mistrust and, therefore, obstructed the constructive effort for negotiations between the supreme leaders of North Korea and the United States", Tass quoted Choe as saying.

Fresh anti-Bouteflika protests in Algeria as allies turn on him

Crowds gather at capital Algiers' landmark Grand Poste square, demanding the president to step down.

The protest movement has been led by students, in a country where half the population is under the age of 30 and youth unemployment has spurred anger against a government seen as out of touch.

The military, which has traditionally played a behind-the-scenes power broker role, has distanced itself from Bouteflika and stayed in its barracks throughout the crisis. It is expected to retain influence under all scenarios.

UK Parliament votes for a Brexit delay

MPs approve motion proposing UK's departure from EU be pushed back to at least June 30.

Britain's parliament has voted in favour of delaying the UK's departure from the European Union by three months, pending approval of Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal within a week.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the European Commission, the EU's executive body, said any delay to Article 50 would require "the unanimous agreement of all 27 member states", citing the 27 other countries which make up the EU, minus the UK.
