World food prices rising again
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations announced that global food prices experienced growth in April, marking the first increase in a year. The FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) averaged 127.2 points last month, compared to 126.5 in March.
The rise in the FFPI was primarily driven by a significant increase in the sugar price index and an upturn in the meat price index. However, the cereal, dairy, and vegetable oil price indices continued to decline.

EU plans to punish China for trade with Russia
The European Union (EU) is reportedly planning to impose sanctions on Chinese companies that engage in trade with Russia, in an effort to tighten economic pressure on Moscow. According to the Financial Times, a new set of restrictions includes seven Chinese businesses, two from mainland China (3HC Semiconductors and King-Pai Technology) and five from Hong Kong (Sinno Electronics, Sigma Technology, Asia Pacific Links, Tordan Industry, and Alpha Trading Investments). These companies have been accused of supplying equipment that could be used in weapons manufacturing by Russia. The proposed sanctions would require unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states.

Sudan’s rival factions have arrived in Saudi Arabia for direct talks, after three weeks of clashes in the capital, Khartoum, and the south-western region of Darfur that have killed at least hundreds and wounded many more.
Representatives of the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were in Jeddah on Saturday for “pre-negotiation talks” aimed at establishing a durable ceasefire that would allow aid to reach millions of desperate civilians trapped by the fighting.
Colombia cancels US deportation flights, blasting ‘cruel’ mistreatment of migrants
Colombia has suspended US deportation flights returning citizens detained at the Mexico border, because of cruel and degrading treatment by US migration officials and last-minute flight cancellations.
Fernando García, head of Colombia’s migration agency, blasted cruel and degrading treatment that some migrants were subjected to before boarding and during the flights, including use of cuffs for hands and feet.
Concerns raised over mining companies’ role in battery passport scheme
Human rights groups have raised concerns that controversial mining companies, including one with a subsidiary under investigation by the UK’s Serious Fraud Office, are taking a key role in a new “battery passport” scheme that counts the electric carmaker Tesla among its key supporters.
The mining companies Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) and Glencore are among the founders of ReSource, a proposed joint venture that is working with several other big companies on making the global car battery supply chain more transparent – giving drivers confidence that the precious metals their car batteries have been mined ethically.
Arab League readmits Syria as relations with Assad normalise
Arab League foreign ministers have adopted a decision to readmit Syria after more than a decade of suspension, consolidating a regional push to normalise ties with President Bashar al-Assad.
The decision, which means Syria can resume its participation in Arab League meetings immediately, also calls for a resolution of the crisis resulting from the country’s civil war, including the flight of refugees to neighbouring countries and drug smuggling across the region.
Indian troops ordered to ‘shoot on sight’ amid violence in Manipur
Indian troops have been deployed to the north-eastern state of Manipur with orders to “shoot on sight” and enforce a curfew as deadly clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups continue for the third day.
The violence and arson has forced about 9,000 people to flee their homes in the remote state, which borders Myanmar. The state government has not given the number of deaths but the chief minister, N Biren Singh, said that “precious lives have been lost” and at least 20 people were reportedly injured, including two local politicians.

Russia launches air attacks on Ukraine ahead of key holiday
Russia has launched dozens of missiles and drones towards Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine, causing at least five injuries, amid growing concerns about the security at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe.
Ukraine's top military command stated that they had destroyed the 35 Iranian-made Shahed drones that were launched during the night and added that Russia had also launched dozens of missiles.

Officials have announced that the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan's Taliban have reached an agreement to enhance trade and reduce tensions along their border. The deal was made between Pakistani Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Afghanistan's Taliban-appointed foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, during a meeting in Islamabad on Sunday, as confirmed by Pakistan's foreign ministry.

Giro en Chile: Boric retrocede y la extrema derecha se convierte en la primera fuerza política

Primeros vagones del Tren Maya serán entregados el 8 de julio: Alstom
Maite Ramos, directora general de Alstom, empresa encargada de la fabricación de las unidades para el Tren Maya, anunció que los primeros vagones que serán entregados llegaran el 8 de julio, es decir, dentro de dos meses. Señaló que ya se trabajó en el diseño de la logística para el traslado al sureste pues implicará un trayecto mil 500 kilómetros desde el sitio donde se están fabricando.
