Afghan War Casualty Report: April 26-May 2

At least 48 pro-government forces and 18 civilians were killed in Afghanistan during the past week. The deadliest attack took place in Feroz Koh City, the provincial capital of Ghor Province, where the Taliban attacked a security outpost, killing nine security forces and wounding five others. In Faryab Province, the Taliban attacked the village of Kohi in Qaisar District, killing six civilians and wounding nine others. The village had no security presence, but was supportive of the Afghan government. This week, the American special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction released a new report confirming that the American military command in Afghanistan has halted regular assessments of how many people and districts the government and insurgents there control eliminating what has long been an important public measure of progress in the war.

Bullets, Tear Gas and Love: Romance Blooms in the Midst of Sudan Protests

Revolutionary Sudan has become the site of extraordinary scenes. After decades of airless, joyless rule under Mr. al-Bashir, a wave of exuberance has rippled across the capital, Khartoum, where young Sudanese are reveling in newfound freedoms — to talk politics, to party and even to find love.

The epicenter of these changes is the protest area at the gates of the military headquarters. Women in jeans move about without fear of harassment from the hated public order police, whose patrols have vanished from the streets. Couples mingle easily, some holding hands.

U.S.-China Trade Deal Unlikely to Address Cybertheft or Subsidies

WASHINGTON — Trade negotiations between the United States and China are entering the final stage, but a deal is expected to fall short of addressing several key Trump administration goals, including combating Chinese cybertheft and state subsidies at various levels of the Chinese government, officials from a leading American business group said on Thursday.

President Trump has repeatedly insisted that a United States-China trade deal will address what he says is a pattern of China illegally gaining access to American computer networks. He has also said it will end economic practices like subsidies that the United States says gives China an unfair competitive edge.

UN calls for Julian Assange's release from UK high-security jail

The UN working group on arbitrary detention (WGAD) said it was deeply concerned by the “disproportionate sentence” imposed on Assange for violating the terms of his bail, which it described as a “minor violation”.

The group has twice previously called for Assange to be freed, after it judged his confinement to the Ecuadorian embassy by the threat of arrest should he leave amounted to arbitrary detention.

Biodiversity crisis is about to put humanity at risk, UN scientists to warn

Up to 1m species are at risk of annihilation, many within decades, according to a leaked draft of the global assessment report, which has been compiled over three years by the UN’s leading research body on nature.

The 1,800-page study will show people living today, as well as wildlife and future generations, are at risk unless urgent action is taken to reverse the loss of plants, insects and other creatures on which humanity depends for foodpollination, clean water and a stable climate.

The report is a compilation of reams of academic studies, in this case on subjects ranging from ocean plankton and subterranean bacteria to honey bees and Amazonian botany. Following previous findings on the decimation of wildlife, the overview of the state of the world’s nature is expected to provide evidence that the world is facing a sixth wave of extinction. Unlike the past five, this one is human-driven.

China to increase overseas military bases: Pentagon report

Beijing will seek to add bases to provide security to One Belt, One Road infrastructure projects, Pentagon report says.

The US Defense Department expects China to add military bases around the world to protect its investments in its ambitious One Belt, One Road global infrastructure programme, according to an official report released on Thursday.

Beijing currently has just one overseas military base, in Djibouti, but is believed to be planning others, including possibly in Pakistan, as it seeks to project itself as a global superpower.

Last year, there were reportedly discussions on a base in the Wakhan corridor of northwest Afghanistan.

In addition, the Washington Post recently identified an outpost hosting many Chinese troops in eastern Tajikistan, near the strategic junction of the Wakhan Corridor, China, and Pakistan.

Multiple Trump administration officials have refused to appear for hearings or interviews and declined requests for documents on a sweeping set of demands from House committees seeking to investigate Trump's finances and business deals. Afghan grand council demands 'immediate and permanent' ceasefire

President Ashraf Ghani says he is 'prepared to implement the fair and legitimate demand' adding it 'can't be one-sided'.

An Afghan grand assembly has ended with delegates from across the country demanding an "immediate and permanent" ceasefire and a promise from the president to free 175 Taliban prisoners ahead of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month that starts on Sunday.

The council - known as Loya Jirga - brought together more than 3,200 participants, politicians, tribal elders and other prominent figures to hammer out a shared strategy for future negotiations with the Taliban.

The Taliban are currently negotiating in separate talks with a US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad in Qatar. They have so far refused to speak with Ghani, who they view as an American "puppet".

Those talks, however, are focused only on a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops and guarantees from the Taliban that Afghan territory will not be used in the future to harbor global fighters.
