China unveils 'Sky Thunder' weapons system amid growing tensions with Taiwan
Chinese state TV ran reports over the weekend about the Tianlei 500, which translates as Sky Thunder, a 500kg precision-guided munitions dispenser and air-to surface missile. The Tianlei can carry six types of submunitions and attack different targets, a senior engineer said in the report.
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions with Taiwan and the US over Taiwan, Hong Kong, the South China Sea and the coronavirus pandemic.
Ex-CIA officer arrested for allegedly selling secrets to China
According to the charges, the former US spy – identified as Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, aged 67 – conspired with an unnamed relative, also an ex-CIA officer, to sell secrets in return for tens of thousands of dollars and gifts.
Ma was arrested on Friday, following a sting operation conducted by the FBI. The relative was identified only as co-conspirator 1, an 85-year-old naturalised citizen living in Los Angeles, who worked as a CIA officer from 1971 to 1982 with the highest clearance level, with access to the identity of covert CIA officers.

Iran reportedly paid bounties to Afghan group for attacks on Americans
According to CNN, US intelligence assessed that Iran paid the bounties to the Haqqani network, for the Bagram attack on 11 December, which killed two civilians and injured more than 70 others, including two Americans.
The Pentagon decided not to take retaliatory action in the hope of preserving a peace deal the Trump administration agreed with the Taliban in February, the CNN report said. In January, less than a month after the Bagram attack, the US killed the Iranian Revolutionary Guard general Qassem Suleimani, in a drone strike in Baghdad, but that attack is not thought to have been a direct retaliation for Bagram.

Israeli forces kill Palestinian in Jerusalem after alleged attack
A Palestinian man has been shot dead by Israeli forces in occupied East Jerusalem's Old City after he allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack.

'Justice delayed': Hariri trial verdict to increase tension
Beirut, Lebanon - Years after former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was assassinated, a large billboard was put up at a main Beirut intersection. It bore Hariri's smiling image, contrasted against a black background, and the words "time for justice" in large, white letters.

'Insanely hot': Death Valley records world temperature record
One of the hottest air temperatures recorded anywhere on the planet in at least a century, and possibly ever, was reached at Death Valley in California's Mojave Desert where it soared to 54.4 Celsius (130 Fahrenheit).

A China-developed vaccine that protects pigs from African swine fever (ASF) will likely be used to vaccinate about 10,000 pigs in the expanded clinical and production trial stage, after previous tests proved effective, moving one step closer to providing immunity for pigs against the disease.

San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chis. El Centro de Derechos Humanos Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas (Frayba), denunció que presuntos pobladores del ejido Santa Martha, municipio de Chenalhó, realizaron este fin de semana “al menos 26 ataques con armas de fuego de alto calibre”, en contra de comunidades del vecino municipio de Aldama, en el contexto del conflicto que mantienen desde hace 45 años por la disputa de 60 hectáreas.
Tres días de ataques a tzotziles de Aldama
Este fin de semana se iniciaron graves ataques armados contra pobladores de diversas comunidades del municipio tzotzil de Aldama, en los Altos de Chiapas. Las agresiones proceden de Santa Martha y otros poblados del municipio, también tzotzil, de Chenalhó, con el cual existe una disputa territorial por 60 hectáreas en su colindancia común. Según reportes recibidos por La Jornada, hasta las 17 horas de ayer seguían los disparos. En el transcurso de una llamada telefónica desde Aldama, cerca de la medianoche del domingo, este reportero pudo escuchar las detonaciones y recibió breves videos con los fogonazos y disparos en la total oscuridad. Antes de las seis de la mañana de ayer recibió nuevos videos con grandes detonaciones y disparos hacia el celular que filmaba, en un punto donde se encuentran familias desplazadas de Aldama.
