Afghan Army Base Is Wiped Out by U.S. Airstrikes, Officials Say

KABUL, Afghanistan — For the second time in a few days, an Afghan Army base was destroyed on Wednesday — but this time by American airstrikes that followed a firefight between the Afghans and Americans, Afghan officials said.

A local Afghan official said six soldiers were killed and nine others badly wounded, out of 17 soldiers at the base. Qais Mangal, a spokesman for the Afghan Defense Ministry, confirmed that the airstrikes had taken place after another Afghan unit attacked a joint convoy of Afghan Special Forces and American troops. He put the death toll at five soldiers, with 10 wounded.

An American military spokeswoman said the Afghan Army post, which she described as a “checkpoint,” had opened fire on the convoy first.

U.N. Is Rebuked by Own Expert for Neglecting Kosovo Poisoning Victims

GENEVA — The United Nations drew a sharp reprimand from one of its human rights experts on Wednesday for its failure to compensate hundreds of Roma families who were forced to live for years exposed to toxic waste in Kosovo that caused disability and possibly deaths.

The circumstances experienced by about 600 Roma families “demand individual compensation and a public apology by the United Nations,” Baskut Tuncak, a United Nations expert monitoring cases relating to hazardous substances, said in a statement.

Senate to Vote Again to End Aid to Saudi War in Yemen

WASHINGTON — The Senate will vote Wednesday on whether to cut off American military assistance for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen, preparing again to rebuke President Trump for his continued defense of the kingdom after the killing of the dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The Yemen vote sets up something of a one-two punch for senators hoping to defy the president. The second punch may land Thursday, when the Senate has the chance to give final passage to a resolution overturning the president’s declaration of a national emergency to secure funding for his border wall.

Passage of the measures would prompt the first vetoes of Mr. Trump’s presidency.

Theresa May confirms she will vote to block no-deal Brexit

Theresa May has confirmed she will vote to block a no-deal Brexit at the end of the month, as she faced renewed pressure from Jeremy Corbyn to abandon her “dead” departure plan and instead embrace Labour’s customs union alternative.

At a prime minister’s questions, where the prime minister again struggled with her voice, keeping her answers brief, the Labour leader began by urging May to back Wednesday evening’s motion seeking to rule out no deal, in place after her plan was rejected the previous night.

Venezuela: Guaidó under investigation for 'sabotage' of power grid

Tarek Saab announced the inquiry on Tuesday, a day after the embattled president, Nicolás Maduro, accused Donald Trump of masterminding a “demonic” plot with the country’s opposition to force him from power.

Saab said the case against Guaidó also involves messages allegedly inciting people to robbery and looting during the crippling blackout which began on Thursday.

'Almost certain extinction': 1,200 species under severe threat across world

The new research, published in PLOS Biology, maps “hotspots” where species are most affected by threats such as agriculture, urbanisation, night lighting, roads, rail, waterways and population density, and “coolspots” that provide refuge from these threats.

Mammals were identified as the most affected group studied, with on average 52% of a species’ distribution degraded by threats.

The top five countries most affected by threats were all in south-east Asia. Malaysia was the most affected, followed by Brunei and Singapore.

The most affected biomes included mangroves, tropical and sub-tropical moist broadleaf forests in southern Brazil, Malaysia and Indonesia, and tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests of India, Myanmar and Thailand.

Syria: SDF militia predicts ISIL's last fight to end imminently

US-backed force says 'final' battle is as good as over and ISIL faces imminent defeat.

Even as the last shred of its "caliphate" crumbled, the armed group put out a new propaganda video - filmed in recent weeks inside Baghouz - insisting on its claim to leadership of all Muslims and calling on its supporters to keep the faith.

'Pure fabrications': China on Uighur internment camp conditions

Xinjiang governor says Uighur camps will gradually disappear if there comes a time that 'society does not need' them.

Activists say there is a network of mass detention camps there holding more than a million people, part of a crackdown that Beijing says is needed to stem the threat of religious "extremism".

Former inmates have described harsh conditions in which Muslim minorities are subject to political indoctrination and psychological torture.

US refuses to ground Boeing 737 MAX 8 after Ethiopia plane crash

Federal Aviation Administration says 'no basis' to ground the plane after crash in Ethiopia killed all 157 on board.

Despite the aviation giant's assurances that the plane is safe and reliable, the European Union, Britain, India and China joined other countries in grounding the plane or banning it from their airspace as they await the results of the investigation into the crash.

The widening actions against the aircraft put pressure on Boeing, the world's largest aeroplane manufacturer, to prove the MAX planes are safe, and the company has said it is rolling out flight software updates by April that could address issues with a faulty sensor.

Pentagon plans to spend $2.6 billion on developing hypersonic weaponry

The US defense budget proposal for FY 2020 boasts a record-breaking research and development request, as the Pentagon seeks to get its hands on all the shiny new things, such as artificial intelligence and hypersonic weaponry.

The US Department of Defense has rolled out the proposal for its budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The Pentagon needs even more funds compared to the massive $716 billion budget in 2019 and now wants it to grow by some five percent – to a whopping $750 billion.

A significant part of the funding is needed to run multiple research and development programs, as the US military is keen to get new weapons and technologies – such as hypersonic missiles, already successfully tested by Russia and China.

China offers help to Venezuela to restore power amid nationwide blackout

China says it is ready to help Venezuela to restore its power grid. The South American country suffered a five-day blackout, with Caracas accusing Washington of cyber “sabotage.”

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said Beijing had noted reports that the power grid had gone down due to a hacking attack. “China is deeply concerned about this,” Lu said, adding that Beijing “hopes that the Venezuelan side can discover the reason for this issue as soon as possible and resume normal power supply and social order.

As US officials repeatedly caught out over Venezuela lies, Pompeo accuses RT of ‘disinformation’

The US has been calling for regime change in Venezuela for months. In that time, US officials have been caught skewing the facts on the ground and pushing disinformation to the media — but the real bad guy? RT, of course.

That’s according to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who spoke to the media on Monday to give “an update” on the situation in Venezuela. Nevermind that the US has declared its support for unelected opposition leader Juan Guaido and repeatedly called for the overthrow of current President Nicolas Maduro, who is supported by millions of citizens.

In Pompeo’s curious interpretation, it is not Washington’s thwarting of international law and attempts to engineer a military coup in full view of the world that is the problem, it is Russia that “has created this crisis” by providing “political cover” to Maduro and pressuring other countries to “disregard the democratic legitimacy” of Guaido — who was, by the way, never actually elected by anyone.

737 MAX disaster: US senators call for grounding troubled Boeing aircraft, Trump talks with CEO

Senators from both parties have called for grounding the Boeing 737 Max 8 airliner following the fatal crash in Ethiopia that killed 157, but the Federal Aviation Administration insists there is "no basis to order" it grounded.

The 737 Max “shows no systemic performance issues,” the FAA's Dan Elwell said, adding that a review by the agency “provides no basis to order grounding the aircraft.” Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is the most recent voice calling for the grounding of the 737 Max, saying it would be “prudent” to do so “until the FAA confirms the safety of these aircraft & their passengers.” Cruz is the head of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Aviation and Space, and has called for a hearing on the cause of the 737 disasters. In addition to the Ethiopian Airlines tragedy, the same type of airliner – operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air – crashed in October last year killing 189 passengers.

The FAA declined to order the grounding of the 737 Max 8. There are currently 74 jets of that model registered to fly in the US, according to FAA records.
