Trump's Talks With Kim Jong-un Collapse Over North Korean Sanctions__

HANOI, Vietnam — President Trump and Kim Jong-un, North Korea's leader, abruptly ended their second summit meeting on Thursday after talks collapsed with the two leaders failing to agree on any steps toward nuclear disarmament or measures to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

"Sometimes you have to walk," Mr. Trump said at an afternoon news conference in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

He said Mr. Kim had offered to dismantle the North's most important nuclear facility if the United States lifted the harsh sanctions imposed on his nation — but would not commit to do the same for other elements of its weapons program. That, Mr. Trump said, was a dealbreaker.

Imran Khan Says Pakistan Will Release Captured Indian Pilot

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan announced on Thursday that his country would be releasing a captured Indian pilot as a way to de-escalate the military crisis that has pitted nuclear-armed militaries against each other for days.

"In our desire of peace, I announce that tomorrow, and as a first step to open negotiations, Pakistan will be releasing the Indian Air Force officer in our custody," Mr. Khan said.

Indian officials did not immediately respond. But after hours of relative lull throughout Thursday, the gesture appeared to be a face-saving opening for both countries to head off a plunge into war.

Israelis May Have Committed Crimes Against Humanity in Gaza Protests, U.N. Says

GENEVA — United Nations investigators said on Thursday that Israeli troops may have committed crimes against humanity in shooting unarmed civilians — including children — who posed no threat during the mass protests last year at the border with Gaza.

A commission of inquiry, formed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to look into the violence, reported that Israeli security forces had killed 189 Palestinians and injured more than 9,000 others. Its 25-page report, released in Geneva on Thursday, accused the Israeli authorities of showing little willingness to prosecute anyone responsible.

"The Israeli security forces killed and maimed Palestinian demonstrators who did not pose an imminent threat of death or serious injury to others when they were shot, nor were they directly participating in hostilities," the panel wrote. "Less lethal alternatives remained available and substantial defenses were in place, rendering the use of lethal force neither necessary nor proportionate, and therefore impermissible."

US in virtual tie with Russia on global confidence, poll finds

Global confidence in US leadership is so low that the country is now in a virtual tie with Russia for worldwide approval.

A new Gallup poll measuring opinion in 133 countries and areas in 2018 found the US and Russia neck and neck, with 31% saying they approve of the leadership of the US, and 30% approval for Russia.

It’s the first time the countries have been close to equal footing

China, meanwhile, beat both, with a 34% approval rating for its leadership skills, and Germany led the pack at 39%.

UN says Israel's killings at Gaza protests may amount to war crimes

UN investigators have accused Israeli soldiers of intentionally firing on civilians and said they may have committed war crimes in their lethal response to Palestinian demonstrations in Gaza.

The independent Commission of Inquiry, set up last year by the UN’s human rights council, said Israeli forces killed 189 people and shot more than 6,100 others with live ammunition near the fence that divides the two territories.

Thirty-five of those killed were children, three were clearly identifiable paramedics and two were clearly marked journalists, the report said.

Israel dismissed the report as “hostile, mendacious and slanted”.

Michael Cohen accuses 'racist, conman' Trump of criminal conspiracy

Donald Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen accused the president in explosive public testimony before Congress of knowing in advance about key events under investigation in the Russia inquiry and of committing criminal conspiracy in the covering up of an extramarital affair.

Testifying on Wednesday, he labelled the US president a “racist” and “conman”, produced signed checks that he said were proof of a fraudulently disguised conspiracy to silence a former adult film actor, and gave what he claimed were eyewitness accounts that implied Trump had prior knowledge of crucial Russia links.

Trump-Kim summit proves to be more of a remake than a sequel

In Hanoi on Wednesday evening, every effort was made in recreating the circumstances and ambience of Singapore, scene last June of the historic first meeting between an incumbent US president and a North Korea leader.

The backdrop and choreography had been meticulously copied, with the two leaders advancing towards one another in front of a row of alternating US and North Korean flags.

Thousands of migrant children allegedly sexually abused in US custody

Almost 5,000 complaints of sexual abuse and harassment of migrant children in US custody have been filed over the past four years, according to government documents released this week. The allegations range from adult staff members having relationships with minors, and the showing of pornographic videos, to forcible touching.

According to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) documentsreleased on Tuesday on Capitol Hill by the Florida Democratic representative Ted Deutch’s office, the reports date back to October 2015, during the Obama administration. However, most of the sexual abuse and harassment reported occurred since Donald Trump took office.

'Progress' but no deal: Mixed scorecard for Trump & Kim's Hanoi summit

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un are leaving Hanoi empty-handed after two days of talks. Despite Trump's talk of "great" prospects for North Korea, no formal deal has been inked. RT sums up the major takeaways from the gathering.

The major agenda item – and what ultimately prevented an agreement from being reached – centered around terms for removing US-imposed sanctions on Pyongyang.

Kim purportedly offered to dismantle a nuclear facility at Yongbyon in exchange for sanctions relief, but Washington demanded more comprehensive denuclearization that included multiple nuclear development-related sites. The two-day summit was aborted early after Kim and Trump failed to make headway on the contentious issue.

Escalating India-Pakistan conflict a major headache for China & US

With skirmishes between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan over Kashmir threatening to boil over into open warfare, one of the major questions is what role Washington and Beijing will take in the conflict.

Indian jets bombed targets in the Pakistani-controlled part of Kashmir, claiming that Islamabad had done nothing to crack down on the terrorist group had carried out the Pulwama suicide attack killing 42 Indian security officers earlier this month. Pakistan responded by shooting down at least one Indian bomber and capturing its pilot. India acknowledged the loss but said it had shot down a Pakistani aircraft as well.

The conflict has also put the US and China in a difficult position, as they both have vested interests in the subcontinent – and in countering each other.

From F-16s & Russian MiGs to old French planes: What India & Pakistan can unleash in air combat

The downing of Indian and Pakistani planes has prompted the world to brace for a potential further escalation of an air conflict between the two arch-rivals. A military analyst elaborates on what options they have. RT has asked a retired colonel and a military analyst, Mikhail Khodarenok, what else the two old foes might have up their sleeves in case of a full-scale aerial combat.

India has recently said it shot down a Pakistani plane while losing its own MiG in action. The Indian MiG-21 appears to be a pretty old aircraft while the Pakistani one, although not officially identified, is considered to be F-16 – one of the world's most numerous fixed-wing aircraft in current military service.

In any potential air battle, India has to mostly rely on the Soviet Mig-29, which was developed in the late 1970s to counter US fighter jets such as F-15 and F-16, Khodarenok said. Initially designed as an air superiority fighter, MiG-29 was later furnished as a multirole aircraft that can be equipped with a range of air-to-air and air-to-surface armaments and precision munitions.

WATCH Russian Soyuz rocket launch 1st OneWeb satellites to revolutionize internet

A Soyuz rocket has successfully launched six OneWeb satellites in the first of 21 planned launches to place 650 units in orbit with the ultimate goal of providing broadband internet "everywhere" to "everyone." OneWeb is a satellite startup founded by the American tech entrepreneur under the name WorldVu in 2012, aiming to provide affordable high-speed internet worldwide, including parts of the world with poor or no internet access.

The first group of satellites was launched from the space center in French Guiana at 21.37 GMT on Wednesday. The Russian rocket shot the payload into low Earth orbit, with all six satellites separating on time, OneWeb founder and chairman Greg Wyler tweeted.

Dmitry Rogozin, the head of the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos), congratulated Wyler on the "successful start of cooperation" between OneWeb Satellites, which is a joint venture between OneWeb and Airbus, and the Russian space agency. The ambitious mission was completed by European launch provider Arianespace, which used a Soyuz launcher to put the satellites into space.

Trump-Kim summit in Vietnam: All the latest updates

US and North Korea leaders leave their meeting in Vietnam's Hanoi early and cancel a planned signing ceremony.

Trump says he and Kim had discussed dismantling North Korea's main nuclear facility at Yongbyon.

Kim was willing to shut down the plant but wanted sanctions relief that US was not prepared to offer, Trump adds.

"[North Korea] wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety and we couldn't do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted but we couldn't give up all of the sanctions for that," Trump says.

Trump also confirms all existing sanctions remain in place, later saying that North Korea offered to denuclearise some areas but not all of those requested by the US - but refuses to comment on whether the US would be willing to allow North Korea to keep some nuclear weapons.

Maduro, Trump should meet to 'find common ground': Venezuela FM

Jorge Arreaza says the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is 'calling for dialogue'.

Jorge Arreaza, addressing the UN Human Rights Council despite a walk-out by dozens of Western envoys, suggested that Maduro and US President Donald Trump meet to "try to find common ground and explain their differences".

After meeting regional leaders including US Vice President Mike Pence in Bogota, Guaido is expected to come back through the porous border in the coming days and resume his political activities in open defiance of a Supreme Court order.

Guaido's team has won control over crucial offshore assets including US-based refiner Citgo, but still does not control the ports or central bank, or, most crucially, the armed forces.

Iran power struggle continues as Zarif keeps top diplomatic post

Foreign Minister Zarif's attempt to resign sheds light on the divisions between hardliners and moderate forces in Iran.

Virginia Pietromarchi

The confrontation is between moderate forces within the government, including Zarif, and hardliners who dominate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a military force directly under the control of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Zarif has been the top Iranian official working to improve relations between the Islamic Republic and Western countries.

Iranian media reported that Zarif's exclusion from the Assad meetings pushed the minister to announce his resignation.

"With his resignation, even if not accepted, Zarif wanted to make the point that the foreign minister needs to be in charge of the country's foreign policy."
