‘Rolling Shock’ as Job Losses Mount Even With Reopenings

Scattershot reopenings of retail stores, nail salons and restaurants around the country have not halted the flood of layoffs, with the government reporting Thursday that nearly three million people filed unemployment claims last week, bringing the two-month tally to more than 36 million.

Experts warn of a long struggle ahead and a virus that ‘may never go away.’

The Federal Reserve chairman, Jerome H. Powell, said the United States was experiencing an economic hit that could permanently damage the economy. The Labor Department said that nearly 3 million more people filed new unemployment claims last week. And the World Health Organization cautioned that the virus might linger for a long time.

Outside Egypt, Critics Speak Freely. Inside, Families Pay the Price.

CAIRO — When a popular Egyptian blogger shared gruesome video of a military officer severing the finger of an unidentified body and setting the body on fire, it was some of the most shocking footage to emerge from Sinai, where Egypt’s military has been battling Islamist militants in a hidden war. As an exiled dissident, Abdullah el-Sherif could afford to be bold enough to broadcast the video in March. But days later, security agents burst into the homes of his relatives in the seaside city of Alexandria and arrested his two brothers on terrorism charges.

US-Mexico border factories pressured to stay open despite Covid-19 risk

Mexico’s border states are home to more than 6,000 maquiladoras – largely foreign-owned factories that manufacture products for export – and the plants, which employ hundreds of thousands of people, have been the focus of several coronavirus outbreaks.

But official efforts to keep the factories shut and contain the spread of Covid-19 have come under intense pressure from companies – and US government officials – who have urged the Mexican government to keep maquiladoras running at any cost.

Baja California, the Mexican state with the largest number of maquiladoras, is the now the state with the second-greatest number of Covid-19 deaths.

China hacking poses 'significant threat' to US Covid-19 response, says FBI

“China’s efforts to target these sectors pose a significant threat to our nation’s response to Covid-19,” the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said in a statement. “This announcement is intended to raise awareness for research institutions and the American public and provide resources and guidance for those who may be targeted.”

China has defended its response to the virus, and on Monday foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian denied the government was involved in any attempt to steal virus-related data.

“China is a staunch upholder of cyber security and a victim of cyber attacks,” he said. “We firmly oppose and fight all kinds of cyber attacks conducted by hackers. We are leading the world in Covid-19 treatment and vaccine research. It is immoral to target China with rumours and slanders in the absence of any evidence.”

US should make bio-labs more transparent: Global Times editorial

The US, which has one of the world's largest biotechnology industries with extensive research realms, is outside a 1972 Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC) protocol, approved by some member-states to the Convention, to increase the transparency of treaty-relevant biological facilities and activities.
