Por un lado es la única potencia militar equiparable a Estados Unidos, con desarrollos tecnológicos que en varios campos lo rebasan, con inteligencia estratégica y con un ejército disciplinado, consistente y de gran tamaño, conocedor de la zona, sus lenguas y costumbres mucho más que el ejército estadounidense y, por otro, su vasto territorio, sus riquezas minerales, su historia y la fuerza de su estado la colocan en una posición regional de liderazgo y en el complemento idóneo para una coalición con el otro gigante asiático que es China.
El caso de Ucrania revela la complejidad de una sociedad compuesta por culturas cercanas pero diferentes, e incluso confrontadas por una historia de despojo y colonización con matices variados y a veces contradictorios. La sociedad ucraniana es en una parte rusa, pero en otra completamente antirrusa, lo que complica el establecimiento de límites y fronteras, no sólo políticas sino culturales y hasta familiares.
