European states trigger dispute mechanism in Iran nuclear deal

Britain, France and Germany have triggered the dispute resolution mechanism in the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, a step that over months could result in the collapse of the agreement entirely and the return of European sanctions on Tehran.

Officials described the move as one taken more in sorrow than anger and said it was in part prompted by fears Iran might be less than a year away from possessing the capacity to develop a nuclear bomb.

More than 300 human rights activists were killed in 2019, report reveals

More than 300 human rights defenders working to protect the environment, free speech, LGBTQ rights and indigenous lands in 31 countries were killed in 2019, a new report reveals.

Two thirds of the total killings took place in Latin America where impunity from prosecution is the norm.

Colombia, where targeted violence against community leaders opposing environmentally destructive mega-projects has spiraled since the 2016 peace accords, was the bloodiest nation with 106 murders in 2019. The Philippines was the second deadliest country with 43 killings, followed by Honduras, Brazil and Mexico.

Libya's Haftar leaves Moscow without signing ceasefire agreement

Turkey's Erdogan criticises breakdown in talks, says Ankara will 'teach Haftar a lesson' if he resumes Tripoli push.

The talks in the Russian capital were held a day after a fragile ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey came into force in Libya.

The negotiations did not include the warring sides meeting face to face, but Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday there was "progress" and that Haftar viewed the ceasefire document "positively".

On Tuesday, the eastern-based forces under Haftar's command posted on their official Facebook page that they were "ready and determined" to achieve victory in their months-long campaign to seize the capital from the GNA.

France, Germany, UK pull diplomatic trigger on Iran deal dispute

E3 bloc says Iran failing to respect its side of nuclear pact but adds it is not joining US 'maximum pressure' campaign.

On January 6, days after the US assassination of a top Iranian general, Tehran took a further step by announcing it would scrap limits on enriching uranium, though it said it would continue cooperating with the United Nations nuclear watchdog.

"We do not accept the argument that Iran is entitled to reduce compliance with the JCPOA," France, Germany and the United Kingdom said in a joint statement on Tuesday, adding they had no choice but to trigger the process that could eventually lead to UN sanctions.

Josep Borrell, the European Union's foreign policy chief, said the aim of the dispute mechanism was not to reimpose sanctions, but "to find a solution for the return to full compliance" with the deal, which was also signed by Russia and China.

With the accord under intense pressure, despite the statements of European leaders, support appears to be growing for a new pact which could receive the endorsement of the US president.

A second Scottish independence referendum? Johnson says no

The UK prime minister has officially rejected a formal referendum request from the Scottish government.

Alasdair Soussi

Buoyed by his success in last month's UK-wide general election which saw him win a majority in Parliament, Conservative leader Johnson rebuffed Sturgeon's demands as he now looks ahead to Britain's withdrawal from the European Union - otherwise known as Brexit - on January 31.

Sturgeon's SNP may have secured 48 out of 59 Scottish seats in December's election, but the devolved Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, where the party also dominates, requires permission - known as a Section 30 order - from Westminster in order to hold a second referendum on Scottish statehood.

In 2021, the next elections to the Scottish Parliament will be held - and today hold more intrigue than ever. The SNP will be hoping to secure a majority or at least return a pro-independence majority combined with the independence-supporting Scottish Green Party.
