US reaches 'deal in principle' with China to end trade war

Reports that the two sides had reached a limited deal emerged on Thursday evening but Beijing remained silent on the issue. At a previously scheduled symposium on Friday, China’s minister of foreign affairs, Wang Yi, said his country had pushed back against American “bullying”.

Wang said the US had “slandered” China by criticising Beijing over its policies in Hong Kong and Xinjiang, damaging “hard-won mutual trust”.

In an attempt to secure a “phase one” trade deal, US negotiators offered to cut existing tariffs on Chinese goods by as much as 50% and suspend new tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on Sunday, two people familiar with the negotiations said earlier on Thursday.

If Donald Trump does not suspend the new tariffs, Beijing officials will apply more tariffs on US goods and may suspend talks until after the US presidential election in November 2020, trade experts believe.

Boris Johnson leads Tories to historic general election win

Johnson’s gamble of triggering a snap poll in the hope of uniting the Brexit vote in leave-supporting seats across Wales, the Midlands and the north of England paid off spectacularly, setting him on course for the Tories’ strongest performance for decades.

An unapologetic Corbyn used his acceptance speech in Islington North to attack the media’s portrayal of him and his party, and insist the party’s policies had been “extremely popular”.

Detectors, jammers and cyber-attackers: the rise of anti-drone tech

In the past two years, non-military drones have shut down Gatwick airport for 36 hours, been used in an apparent assassination attempt against Venezuela’s president and even been flown by Isis fighters to drop grenades on their enemies.

Responding to the threat, a host of companies – from state-run defence contractors to startups – have developed products that can detect, track, jam, destroy or even commandeer rogue drones.

These services comprise a market that is expected to grow by between 20% and 30% in the next few years and could be worth £4bn by the middle of the next decade.

Bolivia's Evo Morales lands in Argentina after being granted asylum

Solá said Morales had requested refugee status and attributed his arrival to the fact that “he feels better here than in Mexico” where Bolivia’s first indigenous president initially sought shelter after fleeing his country on 11 November.

Soon after, Morales tweeted: “A month ago [when] I arrived in Mexico, our sister country which saved my life, I was sad and devastated. Now that I’ve come to Argentina to continue struggling for the most poor … I feel strong and energized. Thanks to Mexico and Argentina for all your support and solidarity.”

Trump impeachment: Committee sends charges to full House for vote

House Judiciary panel votes along party lines to recommend Trump be impeached for obstructing Congress, abuse of power.

William Roberts

A key committee of the US House of Representatives voted along party lines on Friday to approve two articles of impeachment against Donald Trump, charging the president with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The action by the Judiciary Committee sets up a historic vote next week in the full House that could make President Trump only the third president in US history to be impeached.

Many legal experts have supported the Democratic view of the evidence and constitutional law at issue in the impeachment of Trump.

Former PM declared Algeria president, but thousands protest again

Demonstrators who forced Abdelaziz Bouteflika to quit vow to keep protesting after Abdelmadjid Tebboune's election win.

Tebboune - who also served as housing minister under Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the former president forced to step down in April following mass protests - won 58.15 percent of Thursday's vote, according to preliminary results announced on Friday.

Authorities said 40 percent of voters had taken part in Thursday's election, which state media cast as a high enough turnout to vindicate the decision to hold the poll, in spite of protesters' call for a boycott.
