Citizenship Bill: India deploys army in Assam to quell unrest
Army deployed and curfew imposed in parts of northeast India after protest against citizenship bill turns violent.
A curfew was imposed in parts of northeast India, including Assam, after protesters came out on the streets against the bill that they fear will encourage Hindus from Bangladesh to settle in the region.
Resistance to the bill has been the strongest in the Assam state, where a movement against undocumented immigrants has simmered for decades.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government has said the CAB is meant to protect besieged minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Mobile internet has been suspended in 10 districts in Assam for 24 hours until 7pm Thursday, the government said in an order, adding that social media platforms could potentially be used to "inflame passions and thus exacerbate the law and order situation".
Turkey blasts US Senate sanctions aiming to 'change behaviour'
'A new manifestation of disrespect," says Ankara after US Senate committee votes for sanctions over S-400s, Syria war.
The Republican-led Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 18-4 to send the "Promoting American National Security and Preventing the Resurgence of ISIS Act of 2019" for a vote in the full Senate.
Washington suspended Ankara from the US F-35 stealth fighter jet programme, in which it was a producer and buyer, to penalise it for buying S-400 batteries this year.
The US maintains the system could be used by Russia to covertly obtain classified details on the F35s. Turkey, however, counters the S-400 would not be integrated into NATO systems and would not pose a threat to the alliance.
Moscow hopes to seal a deal to supply Turkey with more S-400 systems in the first half of next year, the head of Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport said last month.
Scores of soldiers killed in Niger base attack
President Mahamadou Issoufou cuts short trip to Egypt due to 'tragedy' at military camp in Inates, western Niger.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which is believed to be the deadliest against Niger's military in living memory.
Tuesday's attack came a few days before French President Emmanuel Macron scheduled a meeting next week, in the southwestern French town of Pau, with five presidents from the Sahel to discuss security in the region.
