Bolton Objected to Ukraine Pressure Campaign, Calling Giuliani ‘a Hand Grenade’
WASHINGTON — The effort to pressure Ukraine for political help provoked a heated confrontation inside the White House last summer that so alarmed John R. Bolton, then the national security adviser, that he told an aide to alert White House lawyers, House investigators were told on Monday.
Mr. Bolton got into a tense exchange on July 10 with Gordon D. Sondland, the Trump donor turned ambassador to the European Union, who was working with Rudolph W. Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer, to press Ukraine to investigate Democrats, according to three people who heard the testimony.

Russia Says Its Troops Are Patrolling Between Turkish and Syrian Forces
CEYLANPINAR, Turkey — Russia said on Tuesday that its military units were patrolling territory in northern Syria between Syrian and Turkish forces after the American withdrawal from the area, underscoring the sudden loss of United States influence in the area and illustrating how the power balance in the region has shifted rapidly in the past week.
The announcement that Russian forces were now patrolling an area where the United States had until Monday maintained two military bases appeared to signal that Moscow was moving to fill a security void left by the withdrawal of both the American military and its partners in an international counterterrorism mission.

France concerned over Turkey's military operation in Syria
PARIS, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- France gets increasingly worried about an eventual resurgence of the Islamic State (IS) and a return of French jihadists detained in Kurdish-controled camps, after Turkey carried out a military operation in northeastern Syria. However, the operation could lead to an unintended release of prisoners associated with the IS. The situation has caused worry in France, since hundreds of French jihadists are currently detained in Kurdish-controled camps.
About 12,000 fighters, including Syrians, Iraqis and foreigners from over 50 countries, are held in Kurdish jails, local media reported citing Kurdish data. According to media reports, 785 IS affiliates, possibly including several from France, on Sunday fled from the Ain Issa camp after being bombarded by Turkish forces.

Planned new rocket carries hope for China's manned lunar landing program
BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Space engineers have made a key step in designing a new generation launch vehicle that could help start China's manned lunar exploration program, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
A pre-study for the carrier rocket, conducted by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT) under the CASC, has passed a review by the China Manned Space Agency. The research, started in 2017, has produced an initial blueprint for the rocket, which will be about 87 meters long and have a takeoff weight of about 2,200 tonnes. It could carry payloads of more than 25 tonnes to the lunar transfer orbit and would have a new escape system to improve astronaut safety.

Mexican policemen killed in 'cartel' ambush
At least 13 officers killed after suspected drug cartel hitmen open fire and set vehicles on fire in Michoacan state.
The state police officers on Monday had gone to a home in the town of El Aguaje in Aguililla municipality to issue a warrant when "several armed civilians fired on them" and set their vehicles on fire, Michoacan's state security department said in a statement.
They also showed large placards apparently signed by Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), one of Mexico's most powerful and rising cartels. They warned police not to support rival crime groups, including Los Viagras.
Aureoles said the authenticity of the messages was under investigation.
The incident was one of the bloodiest attacks on security forces since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador took office last December.
Monday's violence came hours after Lopez Obrador announced his government was getting to grips with the country's high murder rate.
