Ukraine to Review Criminal Case on Owner of Firm Linked to Biden’s Son

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s top prosecutor said on Friday that he would review several important cases previously handled by his predecessors, including a criminal case involving the owner of a natural gas company that employed a son of former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

The development came amid an impeachment inquiry against President Trump connected to a request he made to the Ukrainian president asking him to investigate Mr. Biden, a Democratic presidential candidate, and his son’s work in Ukraine.

U.S. Added 136,000 Jobs in September; Unemployment Rate at 3.5%

The government’s latest monthly jobs report took on added significance after a week of otherwise disappointing economic news. Manufacturing activity in the United States fell for the second month in a row, while the World Trade Organization predicted that the growth in global trade would slacken significantly. A key measure of activity in the services sector — which accounts for two-thirds of the country’s output — also cooled.

Russia is helping China build a missile defence system, Putin says

Days after Beijing unveils state-of-the-art missiles, Moscow reveals plan that would ‘radically enhance China’s defence capability’

Since the cold war, only the United States and Russia have had such systems, which involve an array of ground-based radars and space satellites. The systems allow for early spotting of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Cyprus calls Turkey gas exploration 'provocative and aggressive'

Nicosia says Ankara has used 'bullying tactics of an era long gone' by sending another drilling ship to its coast.

The ship, named the Yavuz, was about 94km (51 nautical miles) off the Cypriot coast on Friday.

Turkey has already drilled two wells in waters off Cyprus's east and west coasts, triggering strong protests from Nicosia and the European Union (EU). Cyprus joined the union in 2004.

Turkey has repeatedly claimed exploring rights off Cyprus, either through its own continental shelf or in zones where Turkish Cypriots have equal rights over any finds with Greek Cypriots.

Trump again seeks foreign help to probe Bidens, calls on China

Top Democrat says Trump calls for foreign involvement are a 'fundamental breach of his oath of office'.

As he left the White House for a visit to Florida, the Republican president told reporters he believed both China and Ukraine should look into 2020 presidential hopeful Biden and his businessman son Hunter, and described the impeachment inquiry as "crap."

Trump's appeal to China is particularly striking since Washington and Beijing are locked in a bitter trade war that has damaged global economic growth and are set to hold another round of talks in the United States in the coming week.

Trump froze $400m in US aid to Ukraine shortly before he asked its president for the favour, prompting accusations from Democrats that he had used US foreign policy for his own benefit. Trump has maintained he did nothing wrong and has called the impeachment inquiry "witch-hunt garbage".

Japan PM seeks meeting with N Korea's Kim despite missile launch

Abe wants to discuss the abduction of Japanese nationals by North Korean agents.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Friday he was determined to meet North Korea's leader to resolve the issue of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korean agents, maintaining an offer to talk despite the country's missile launches.

In 2002, North Korea admitted its agents had kidnapped 13 Japanese decades before.

Japan says 17 of its citizens were abducted, five of whom were repatriated. North Korea has said eight are dead and another four never entered the country.

Facebook removes accounts from UAE, Nigeria, Egypt and Indonesia

Hundreds of pages accused of 'coordinated inauthentic behaviour' and misleading millions of users worldwide.

Facebook has removed several pages, groups and accounts on its platforms from the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, citing "coordinated inauthentic behaviour" aimed at misleading social media users.

They were traced to three separate and "unconnected" operations, one of which was operating in three countries, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Nigeria; and two others in Indonesia and Egypt, to spread misleading posts and news articles.

The social media giant has recently cracked down on such accounts after its founder Mark Zuckerberg came under fire in the last few years for sluggishness in developing tools to combat "extremist" content and propaganda operations.
