Ocean cleanup device successfully collects plastic for first time
A huge floating device designed by Dutch scientists to clean up an island of rubbish in the Pacific Ocean that is three times the size of France has successfully picked up plastic from the high seas for the first time.
Boyan Slat, the creator of the Ocean Cleanup project, tweeted that the 600 metre-long (2,000ft) boom had captured and retained debris from what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Alongside a picture of the collected rubbish, which includes a car wheel, Slat wrote: “Our ocean cleanup system is now finally catching plastic, from one-ton ghost nets to tiny microplastics!
Trump administration's war on science has hit 'crisis point', experts warn
There are now “almost weekly violations” of previously cherished norms, the report states, with the current administration attempting “not only to politicize scientific and technical research on a range of topics, but also, at times, to undermine the value of objective facts themselves”.

China welcomes DPRK and U.S. resuming dialogue: spokesperson
BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday said it welcomes the statements of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States to resume dialogue and hopes the two sides will grasp the opportunity to strive for positive outcomes.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying made the comments in a press statement issued Wednesday night.
DPRK First Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said in a statement on Tuesday that Pyongyang and Washington have agreed to have preliminary contact on Oct. 4 and hold working-level talks on Oct. 5. It is said the U.S. has confirmed this.

Balkans' computer-assisted military exercise kicks off in Bulgaria
SOFIA, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- A multinational computer-assisted exercise, involving nine countries from the Balkan region, kicked off in Bulgaria on Monday, the country's Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
Up to 200 military and civilian personnel from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia and Turkey participate in the five-day exercise codenamed "Balkan Bridges - 2019," the ministry said.
The purpose of the drill, which is hosted by Bulgaria's National Military Training Complex "Charalitza," was to enhance the interoperability of the Balkan states' armed forces, and improve their capabilities to respond adequately to any hazard and risk related to the security in the region, it said.
