Hong Kong Police Shoot a Protester With a Live Bullet for the First Time
HONG KONG -- The Hong Kong police on Tuesday shot a demonstrator with a live round for the first time during the city's monthslong protest movement, three prodemocracy lawmakers said, escalating the territory's political crisis on the same day that the central government in Beijing staged a huge military parade to celebrate 70 years of Communist control.
The protester was shot in the Tsuen Wan district of northern Hong Kong, the lawmakers Claudia Mo, James To and Au Nok-hin each said. Tsuen Wan is a working-class area near Hong Kong's border with the Chinese mainland, miles from the city's gleaming financial district.

Bernie Sanders Raises $25.3 Million for Presidential Bid
Senator Bernie Sanders raised $255.3 million in the past three months, his campaign said on Tuesday, a total that continues to demonstrate his strength with small donors as he fights to maintain support in key early-voting states. The financial haul, among the first that a candidate has announced for the third-quarter, will almost certainly place Mr. Sanders in the top of the field for fund-raising.

The Extra-Secret White House Computer System, Explained
WASHINGTON -- The whistle-blower who revealed President Trump's attempt to pressure Ukraine's leader to open investigations that could benefit him politically also accused White House officials of essentially hiding a rough record of the conversation by placing it in the same highly restricted computer system for closely guarded government secrets.

Yemen: Aden's changing alliances erupt into four-year conflict's newest front
More than four years in, Yemen’s conflict is now actually three wars in one: a fight between the Iran-backed northern Houthi rebels and the Saudi-led coalition of Arab nations; a fight between both those parties and extremist elements such as al-Qaida and Islamic State; and belatedly, a fight between the STC, which wants a return to independence for south Yemen, and its former Yemeni government allies.
New reports reveal wider role for Barr and Pompeo in impeachment scandal
William Barr, the attorney general, and Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, collectively participated in contacts between Trump and leaders of at least four foreign countries, according to multiple reports.
Those contacts were variously aimed at producing stories that could damage Joe Biden, Trump’s potential 2020 opponent, or at producing stories that could undermine the US intelligence community’s assessment from 2017 of Russian election tampering in the last election, the reports said.

Bad ancestors: does the climate crisis violate the rights of those yet to be born?
Last month an astonishing 7 million people from nearly 200 countries took to the streets as part of the youth-led global climate strike. Young people around the world recognise that the disastrous repercussions of the already present ecological crisis will fall disproportionately on their shoulders, and the shoulders of generations to come – in particular on those whose communities have emitted the smallest proportion of greenhouse gasses.

China displays new hypersonic nuclear missile on 70th anniversary
Beijing also showcased inter-ballistic missile capable of reaching US in 30 minutes during 70th anniversary parade.
China's military has shown off a new hypersonic ballistic nuclear missile believed capable of breaching all existing anti-missile shields deployed by the United States and its allies.
The vehicle-mounted DF-17 was among weapons displayed on Tuesday in a large military parade led by President Xi Jinping to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
That speed, and the missile's use of multiple independently manoeuvrable re-entry vehicles to deliver warheads, makes it far more difficult to detect and intercept.
The DF-17's hypersonic glide vehicle technology also permits it to fly at a much lower altitude just before delivering its warhead, further frustrating attempts to detect and intercept the weapon.
According to an analysis of by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the missile is capable of striking the continental US within 30 minutes.
A new and advanced radar system that could "detect jets and missiles" was also introduced, as well as new HQ-9B surface-to-air missiles "capable of intercepting multiple air strike weapons in a complex electro-magnetic environment".

Pompeo arrived in Rome just hours after US officials confirmed his participation in Trump's July 25 phone call with Ukraine's president that is fueling the impeachment inquiry by House Democrats. Pompeo is the first Cabinet official known to have heard Trump press the Ukrainian leader to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden's son for corruption.
