US briefing: Trump-Ukraine scandal, Greta Thunberg and Boris Johnson

Trump meets Ukraine accusations with baseless Biden claim

Donald Trump has tried to shrug off the growing demands for his impeachment amid allegations that he pressured the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to investigate his potential 2020 rival, Joe Biden, over baseless claims of corruption. Speaking in New York, the president insisted he did not take the threat of impeachment seriously and tried to turn the accusations against him back on his opponents, saying Biden was “corrupt” and the media “crooked”.

How the FBI targeted environmental activists

More than a dozen environmental activists who campaigned against fossil fuel extraction in North America were identified in domestic terrorism-related investigations by the FBI, according to hundreds of pages of the bureau’s files that were obtained by the Guardian through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.

Greta Thunberg condemns world leaders in emotional speech at UN

In a stinging speech on Monday, the teenage Swedish climate activist told governments that “you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is. You are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal.”

Days after millions of young people joined protests worldwide to demand emergency action on climate change, leaders gathered for the annual United Nations general assembly aiming to inject fresh momentum into efforts to curb carbon emissions.

DETAINED How the US built the world's largest immigrant detention system

The United States’ reliance on immigrant detention is not a new phenomenon, nor did it emerge with Donald Trump (though its growth under his administration is staggering). Over the last four decades, a series of emergency stopgaps and bipartisan deals has created a new multibillion dollar industry built on the incarceration of immigrants.

Brazilian indigenous leaders denounce Bolsonaro before UN speech

Brazil’s president is expected to use his UN debut to launch a Trumpian assault on the left and push back against foreign criticism of his treatment of Brazil’s environment and indigenous communities. He has recruited a rare pro-Bolsonaro indigenous voice, Ysani Kalapalo, to travel with him to New York in an effort to soften his notoriety as a rainforest destroyer.

But in a strongly worded open letter, 16 indigenous leaders from Brazil’s Xingu indigenous park spurned Bolsonaro’s “colonialist and ethnocidal” programme for their communities, which he has pledged to open for commercial exploitation.

Trump praises el-Sisi, 'not concerned' with Egypt protests

US president backs embattled president who is grappling with rare protests calling for him to step down.

Discontent over the rising cost of living has been swelling in Egypt, where the government has imposed strict austerity measures since 2016 as part of a $12bn loan package from the International Monetary Fund. Nearly one in three Egyptians live below the poverty line on less than $1.40 a day, according to official figures released in July. Other estimates put the figure higher.

Since the protests erupted, security forces have reinforced their presence in central Cairo and plain-clothes officers have been stopping people to check the social media content on their mobile phones, according to reports. Al Jazeera is banned from reporting inside Egypt.

Germany, UK, France blame Iran for Saudi oil attacks

Three signatories to 2015 Iran deal issue joint statement as more signs emerge pointing to collapse of agreement.

"It is clear for us that Iran bears responsibility for this attack. There is no other plausible explanation," the three leaders said in the joint statement released by France.

Pledging to work to ease tensions in the Middle East, the three urged Iran to "refrain from choosing provocation and escalation".

France's Macron also appears to be considering abandoning the accord.

Google wins 'right to be forgotten' case in top EU court

European Court of Justice rules against obliging Google to apply 'right to be forgotten' rule globally.

The landmark case stems from a legal battle waged by France to impose a "right to be forgotten" on the web.

The European Court of Justice's (ECJ) ruling on Tuesday prevented the 28-member EU from acquiring unprecedented powers to regulate the internet beyond its borders.

That means the "right to be forgotten" will be seen only on European versions of the Google search page - google.fr or google.de, say - but not on google.com or other domains outside the EU.

Since 2016, the company has used so-called "geoblocking" to filter all Google site results to Europeans so they will not see the information a person in their country wants to limit.

Two rockets 'hit' near US embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone

No casualties reported and no group claims responsibility for reported rocket attacks.

A foreign security source inside the Green Zone said two 100mm rockets hit close to the US embassy and a third fell into the Tigris River, which the embassy overlooks.

Tensions escalated this summer when a string of mysterious blasts hit weapons depots and other bases used by pro-Iran paramilitary forces known as the Hashd al-Shaabi, or Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF).

The PMF blamed the US and Israel, with its political branch calling the attacks "a declaration of war" and resuming its calls for US troops to leave the country.
