US applies to seize Iranian tanker held in Gibraltar
Trump administration officials told the Guardian that the surprise US request, which complicated efforts by the UK government and the British overseas territory to defuse tensions with Tehran, was consistent with wider efforts by Washington to intensify the effect of existing western economic sanctions on the two countries.
A US official said that the tanker case was significant because “it’s both an Iranian regime oil export and, in the judgment of HMG [the UK government] it’s an Assad regime oil import”.
Trump tells Beijing to treat Hong Kong humanely or risk trade deal
“Millions of jobs are being lost in China to other non-Tariffed countries. Thousands of companies are leaving. Of course China wants to make a deal. Let them work humanely with Hong Kong first!” the US president tweeted.
“I have ZERO doubt that if President Xi wants to quickly and humanely solve the Hong Kong problem, he can do it,” he said in a subsequent tweet, suggesting a “personal meeting” with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

US 'applied to seize' detained Iranian vessel in Gibraltar
US request came shortly before a court in Gibraltar was expected to announce the tanker's release.
Just hours before Gibraltar was due to release the Grace 1 vessel, the US Department of Justice sought to seize it.
The Gibraltarian court's chief justice, Anthony Dudley, made clear that were it not for the US move, "the ship would have sailed", the Gibraltar Chronicle reported.
"The UK's position has already been that this is a matter for the Gibraltar authorities - but that seems to have changed now [that the US wants to intervene]".
US markets plummet in their worst day of 2019
The Dow tumbles 800 points as investors worry about the global economy, the US-China trade war and Brexit.
Wall Street sold off sharply on Wednesday as recession fears gripped the market after the United States Treasury yield curve temporarily inverted for the first time in 12 years.
All three major US indexes closed down about three percent, with the blue-chip Dow posting its biggest one-day point drop since October after two-year Treasury yields surpassed those of 10-year bonds, which is considered a classic signal of recession.
All of the 11 major sectors in the S&P 500 closed in negative territory, with energy, financials, materials, consumer discretionary and communications services all falling three percent or more.
Rival department store operators Nordstrom Inc and Kohl's slid 10.6 percent and 11.0 percent, respectively.

Google staff warns against working with US border agencies
A letter signed by almost 400 people urges Google not to be involved in 'human rights abuses'.
More than 350 Google employees have written an open letter to the company, demanding Google does not work with the US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) because of its treatment of migrants at the country's southern border.
The letter, written by 365 Google employees and 35 supporters on Wednesday, also demands the company not work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), accusing all three agencies of human rights abuses.
The letter was written following CBP plans to find a company that can honour its massive cloud computing needs.
During World War II, US computer company IBM sold punch-card machines that were used by the German Nazi regime to better organise mass deportations and killings in concentration camps.
