In Escalation, Iran Tests Medium-Range Missile, U.S. Official Says
WASHINGTON — Iran fired a Shahab-3 medium-range missile on Wednesday, a United States military official said, playing it down by saying that it did not pose a threat to American or other Western shipping or military bases in the region.
The missile was launched from the southern coast of Iran and landed east of Tehran, the official said on Thursday, adding that it flew about 1,100 kilometers, or about 680 miles, and stayed inside Iran for the entire flight.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence analyses, said that American officials had been closely monitoring the test site as Iran prepared the missile for launch.

New North Korean Missile Comes With Angry Message to South Korea’s President
SEOUL, South Korea — When North Korea said on Friday that it had tested a new, more advanced missile, it pointed the finger of blame at one man: Moon Jae-in, the South Korean president, who just last year embraced Kim Jong-un at their countries’ border.
The North said Mr. Kim, its leader, had personally arranged the missile test on Thursday to counter what it called Mr. Moon’s “double-dealing”: talking peace with North Korea even as he bought state-of-the-art F-35 stealth jets and planned joint military drills with the United States.

Russia Targeted Election Systems in All 50 States, Report Finds
WASHINGTON — The Senate Intelligence Committee concluded Thursday that election systems in all 50 states were targeted by Russia in 2016, an effort more far-reaching than previously acknowledged and one largely undetected by the states and federal officials at the time.
But while the bipartisan report’s warning that the United States remains vulnerable in the next election is clear, its findings were so heavily redacted at the insistence of American intelligence agencies that even some key recommendations for 2020 were blacked out.

Hong Kong Protests Spread to Airport as City Fears More Unrest
HONG KONG — Black-clad demonstrators rallied in Hong Kong’s airport on Friday, filling the arrivals hall of one of the world’s busiest terminals as the city braced for another weekend of potentially combustible protests.
Activists also signaled that despite objections from the police, they would continue with plans for a Saturday rally against mob violence in Yuen Long, a district near the mainland Chinese border where last weekend a group of men attacked people in a train station and on nearby streets.
That attack on Sunday, which left at least 45 people injured, was apparently meant to intimidate the protesters who have been holding demonstrations in the city for weeks. But the men, many of whom were masked and dressed in white T-shirts, also lashed out at train passengers who had no apparent connection to the demonstrations.

Afghan War Casualty Report: July 19-25
At least 55 pro-government forces and 54 civilians were killed over the last week of fighting in Afghanistan. The deadliest of the attacks took place in Takhar Province, where the Taliban attacked and captured two security bases in Ishkamish District, killing 24 soldiers and 13 police officers. Six police officers were also wounded. Both bases were later recaptured by reinforcements, which arrived for backup belatedly. In Logar Province, nine civilians were killed in an American airstrike on the Khaki Dag area of the Baraki Barak District, where a community of Kuchi nomads lived. The United Nations confirmed the casualties.

Up to 150 feared dead in 'year's worst Mediterranean tragedy'
Two boats carrying about 300 people capsized off Libya's coast, with scores, including children, feared drowned.
Ayoub Qasim, a spokesman for Libya's coastguard, told The Associated Press news agency that two boats carrying around 300 people sank approximately 120km east of the capital, Tripoli, before adding that 134 had been rescued.
Charlie Yaxley, spokesman for the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), said the survivors were picked up by local fishermen then taken back to shore by the Libyan coastguard.
He called on European nations to resume rescue missions in the Mediterranean, halted after a European Union decision, and appealed for an end to migrant detentions in Libya. Safe pathways out of the North African country are needed "before it is too late for many more desperate people", Grandi said.
India says Iran frees 9 crew from seized Panama-flagged tanker
Release of 9 comes as 21 other Indian sailors remain in Iranian detention, including 18 in UK-flagged Stena Impero.
Iran had accused the vessel, the MT Riah, of smuggling contraband fuel when it was detained in mid-July amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil artery.
The Stena Impero and its 23 crew have been impounded at the southern port of Bandar Abbas for allegedly breaking "international maritime rules". The vessel is at the heart of a showdown between Iran and Britain.
Apart from the 18 Indians, there are three Russians, a Latvian and a Filipino on the ship.
PA's Mahmoud Abbas declares suspension of all deals with Israel
Palestinian president says committee will be formed to end agreements with Israel but does not provide further details.
The 84-year-old's declaration on Thursday came after an emergency meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the wake of Israel's demolition this week of several Palestinian buildings in Sur Baher village - a move Abbas described as an act of "ethnic cleansing".
"We announce the leadership's decision to stop implementing the agreements signed with the Israeli side," Abbas said at a speech in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank.
In the meeting, Abbas also affirmed it was time to implement the Cairo 2017 agreement brokered by Egypt, referring to a reconciliation deal signed between Palestinian political parties Hamas and Fatah.https://w
