Sudan Security Forces Open Fire at Protest Site

Gunfire erupted in the streets of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, early Monday as security forces opened fire on pro-democracy protesters outside the country’s military headquarters and killed at least 13 people, according to opposition groups and local media reports.

Soldiers fanned out across the city in the most concerted drive yet to disperse the protesters, who are demanding a transition to civilian rule after the ouster of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir in April.

The removal of Mr. al-Bashir raised hopes among the protestersafter decades of autocratic rule, but weeks of talks between protest leaders and the Transitional Military Council, which has ruled Sudan since April, collapsed this week.

Algeria Cancels Presidential Election, Setting Up New Impasse

CAEN, France — Algeria’s Constitutional Council on Sunday canceled elections planned for next month, acceding to demands from protesters who since February have upended the country’s politics.

The council, a semi-independent body operating in the shadow of the country’s all-powerful military, gave no reason for canceling the July 4 vote in its official statement. But the decision was not unexpected: For weeks, the protesters who have filled the streets of Algiers and other cities have been demanding nothing less.

The protesters deemed the planned elections illegitimate because they were engineered by the army and by politicians put in place by Algeria’s ousted leader, Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Trump Administration Says It Will Negotiate With Iran With ‘No Preconditions’

BELLINZONA, Switzerland — In a second major softening of American policy toward Iran in recent days, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday that the Trump administration was ready to negotiate with the country’s clerical leaders with “no preconditions.”

The statement followed President Trump’s comment last weekthat he was ready to talk to Iranian leaders and was not seeking regime change, overruling a longtime goal of his national security adviser. Mr. Pompeo’s statement also recalibrated his earlier position that the United States would not lift sanctions on Iran unless it complied with a dozen sweeping demands, suggesting that those demands could be part of negotiations instead of preconditions.

Acting Defense Chief Sees No Need to Restart Big Military Exercises With South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea — Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said on Sunday that he did not see a need to restore the large-scale joint military exercises that the United States and South Korea suspended over the past year as a concession to North Korea.

American and South Korean troops have continued low-key, smaller-scale exercises during the suspension, but the two countries are expected to keep holding off on the big, publicly advertised war games that can include thousands of ground, naval, air and Special Operations troops.

North Korea has long viewed the high-profile exercises as provocative, and President Trump announced last year that he was suspending them as he pursued nuclear negotiations with the North’s leader, Kim Jong-un.

Protesters shot as Sudan military tries to clear Khartoum sit-in

At least nine killed in ongoing military raid on Khartoum sit-in site, as protesters continue to demand civilian rule.

Mohammed Elmunir, another protester in the Sudanese capital, said security forces blocked the exits of the sit-in site before opening fire on protesters.

The sit-in has become the focal point of Sudan's protest movement, which saw longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir overthrown in April and has since been calling for the generals who replaced him to hand over power to a civilian-led administration.

Pompeo questions reception of US plan 'loved only by Israelis'

In tape obtained by Washington Post, secretary of state says US's Israel-Palestine peace plan may not 'gain traction'.

The Washington Post reported on Sunday it had obtained an audio recording of Mike Pompeo in which the US secretary of state told Jewish leaders that the still-secret plan might not "gain traction" and critics might reject it as not "particularly original".

The Palestinian leadership, which has criticised the peace proposal, was not consulted about the upcoming conference in Manama, which is not expected to address the core political issues of the conflict: final borders, the status of Jerusalem, or the fate of Palestinian refugees.

The PLO, meanwhile, has dismissed the Kushner effort as an attempt to bribe Palestinians into accepting Israeli occupation of the West Bank, a prelude to Israel annexing about half their territory and leaving them with scattered cantons.

Hamas, which administers the besieged Gaza Strip, has also rejected the US peace plan.

Qatar expresses reservations over Mecca summit outcome

Qatar's foreign minister has questioned the hardline statements on Iran made at emergency summits in Mecca.

The three emergency summits, which Saudi Arabia hosted in the holy city of Mecca over the weekend, came following attacks on oil assets, including two Saudi oil tankers off the United Arab Emirates (UAE) coast.

The Mecca summit backed Saudi Arabia over escalating tensions with Iran.
