Israel in Uncharted Territory as Netanyahu Fails to Form a Coalition

JERUSALEM — A politically fatigued Israel cranked back into election mode on Thursday, barely 50 days after its last national ballot and after the staggering failure of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a government by midnight Wednesday.

With the next vote set for Sept. 17, Israel is in uncharted political terrain. Mr. Netanyahu is Israel’s first prime minister-elect to be unable to form a coalition after an election, and the first to force another one by dissolving a Parliament sworn in just a month previously. His aura of invincibility, formed over a decade in office, has been seriously dented.

Punching Iran Over Its Foreign Policy Could Lead to a Faster Path to War

WASHINGTON — In repeating his readiness to pursue a new nuclear deal with Iran, President Trump this week left unmentioned his administration’s aim to hobble what officials call Tehran’s “expansionist foreign policy” — an ambitious priority that is far more likely to lead the United States into war.

The expansive, open-ended mission of wrestling with Iran’s diplomacy and military activity could prompt armed conflict well before any showdown over a nuclear program, according to lawmakers, former government officials and analysts.

China tells US provoking trade disputes is 'naked economic terrorism'

“We oppose a trade war but are not afraid of a trade war. This kind of deliberately provoking trade disputes is naked economic terrorism, economic homicide, economic bullying,” Zhang said, when asked about the trade war with the US.

The comments came after financial markets around the world suffered when Beijing signalled a readiness to strike back at Washington in their escalating trade war by restricting exports of rare-earth elements.

US-China trade: what are rare-earth metals and what's the dispute?

Rare earths refer to a group of 17 elements that are prized for their unique magnetic and electrochemical properties.

They include elements such as gadolinium, lanthanum, cerium and promethium, and are vital in the production of cancer treatment drugs, smartphones and renewable energy technologies.

The elements have been designated as “critical” by the US Geological Survey for sectors including national defence.

China is by far the world’s largest producer of rare earths and accounts for about 70% of global production. The country has some 37% of global reserves.

Putin submits bill on suspension of INF Treaty

President Vladimir Putin has submitted to Russia’s parliament a draft resolution on Moscow’s suspension of the INF Treaty with the United States. If the Duma approves the bill, the suspension will become law.

The State Duma will consider the draft later on Thursday. Russian president will be able to renew the suspension at his discretion. In February, the US announced its unilateral withdrawal from the INF Treaty. It claimed that Russia’s testing of the 9M729 missile breached the terms of the deal.

INF treaty suspension enables Russia to develop new arms and boost national security – Moscow

Withdrawal from the INF treaty will give Russia breathing space to develop the weaponry that suits its security priorities, Russia’s top senator says, as president Putin submits a bill on Moscow’s suspension of the nuclear pact.

Valentina Matvienko, who chairs the Federation Council, made a statement shortly after president Vladimir Putin had submitted to parliament a draft resolution on Moscow’s suspension of the key Cold War era agreement. The move came as Washington unilaterally pulled out of the INF treaty back in February.

Pentagon tells same old story: Russia ‘PROBABLY’ violating nuke treaty... that US never ratified

The Pentagon has rolled out new allegations against Russia, suggesting that Moscow might be conducting nuclear tests banned by a treaty which the US never even ratified.

Lt. Gen. Robert P. Ashley Jr, the head of the Pentagon’s intelligence arm, disclosed during a speech at the right-wing Hudson Institute on Wednesday that the United States believes Russia has “probably” restarted low-yield nuclear tests, in violation of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

The fear, according to Ashley, is that Russia may be developing tactical nuclear weapons for use on conventional battlefields. Pressed about the claim in a question-and-answer session afterward, Ashley backed away from his provocative word choice and said only that Russia “has the capability” to conduct a test with a low nuclear yield.

Trump denies ordering military to move USS John McCain ‘out of sight’

President Donald Trump has denied he was aware of the relocation of a guided-missile destroyer bearing the name of his late congressional nemesis after a story that he’d ordered the Navy to move it “out of sight” enraged critics.

“I was not informed about anything having to do with the Navy Ship USS John S. McCain during my recent visit to Japan,” Trump tweeted on Wednesday, pouring cold water on a Wall Street Journal story published earlier that day that had claimed an email to Navy and Air Force officials had specifically requested the ship “needs to be out of sight.”
