This Is Inequity at the Boiling Point

For 150 years of industrialization, the combustion of coal, oil and gas has steadily released heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, driving up average global temperatures and setting heat records. Nearly everywhere around the world, heat waves are more frequent and longer lasting than they were 70 years ago. But a hotter planet does not hurt equally. If you’re poor and marginalized, you’re likely to be much more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Trump bans US transactions with Chinese-owned TikTok and WeChat

Executive orders issued late on Thursday would prohibit “any transaction by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States,” with the companies, beginning in 45 days.

The video-sharing app has come under fire from US lawmakers and the Trump administration over national security concerns. TikTok’s parent company ByteDance faces a deadline of 15 September either to sell its US operations to Microsoft or another US firm or face an outright ban.

Turkey denounces maritime deal between Greece, Egypt

Turkey has slammed a "so-called agreement" between Greece and Egypt on an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

The Turkish foreign ministry in a statement on Thursday declared the deal "null and void", adding Greece and Egypt have no mutual sea border. The area is located on Turkey's continental shelf, as reported to the United Nations, the ministry said.

GLOBAL TIMES

If war breaks out between China and the US, which side will have the upper hand?

If it comes to China's core interests, Taiwan, for example, crosses the line under the US encouragement and leads to a military showdown, then at that time there will be a contest of wills as well as a contest of strength. Who's at the upper hand in that situation? It's a combination of military strength plus morality plus the will to fight. Who do you think would be stronger in a war off China's coast?

So the US should be reminded to distance itself from China's core interests. Don't play with fire off China's coast, don't really stir up conflict over Taiwan question, and don't overdo it in the South China Sea. If the Trump administration just wants to create China-US tensions to help his re-election campaign, and is not really ready for a military showdown, then be careful for the next few months, and don't go too far.

China certainly doesn't want a war. My suggestion is that under no circumstances should the Chinese military fire the first shot. But I am confident that China will be well prepared to fire a second shot as a response to the first shot.

US an annoying outsider in South China Sea affairs

By The US has been waging an all-out campaign against China in an attempt to maintain its hegemony. It won't miss any chance to use the South China Sea issue as leverage. Against this backdrop, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in July said China's maritime claims in the South China Sea were "completely unlawful." People familiar with rhetoric on international politics are clearly aware that Pompeo's words deliver a message that the US is bolstering Southeast Asian claimants to take measures against China.

However, the US has not ushered in positive responses from these Southeast Asian countries. Take Vietnam. Vietnam's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang in July said Vietnam hopes all countries will make efforts to contribute to and maintain peace.

Besides, a regional community with shared future, rather than ties with a faraway US, is becoming the foundation on which the ASEAN depends. Amid the new trend of de-globalization, especially as the US has broken up a bunch of international rules to maintain its interests, regional solidarity has become an optimal choice for ASEAN members. In the first half of 2020, ASEAN became China's largest trading partner.

If the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership will be signed within this year under joint effort of China and ASEAN, the advantage of a regional community with shared future will be further embodied.

China and Vietnam both have strong bonds defending their socialist systems. This is where the two countries' core interests lie. Pompeo's speech on July 23 discriminated against socialist ideology - this has inevitably rung alarms for Vietnam.

US 'decoupling' attempt will be doomed to fail

The US' suppression of high-tech Chinese companies has accelerated to a historically high level, and its means and scopes of attacks are unprecedented if compared to previous technology conflicts.

Perhaps the reason behind the attack is China's rapid technological development has aroused anxiety in the Trump administration. That is because China's manufacturing has gained capabilities in research and development (R&D) as well as in innovation, with a number of internationally competitive companies and brands emerging in fields like artificial intelligence, the internet, biotechnology and new energies.

The US' suppression of Chinese technology sector hasn't beaten Chinese manufacturing, but rather stimulated its potential in indigenous innovation and R&D. In the past, the US has not succeeded in blocking US-China technological cooperation, and nor will it this time.

Market forces require bilateral cooperation and exchanges, and technology knows no borders.

Banning WeChat is an extension of China-US trade war: expert

US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Thursday that, beginning 45 days after the date of the order, prohibits any transaction that is related to WeChat by any person or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the US, with Tencent Holdings.

Although the market share of WeChat in the US is limited, analysts said the US blockade on WeChat is actually part of a larger war that targets China's tech industry, as Tencent is one of the largest tech firms in the world and represents China's technology prowess.

"It is a political game, which will have a negative impact on Chinese internet companies going abroad. Chinese companies need to be vigilant about whether other countries will follow the US and block Chinese apps," Chen said.

In fact, the usage rate of WeChat among US users is only 0.79 percent, while it has 1.2 billion active users worldwide by March 31, of whom most are Chinese.

US executive orders targeting Chinese apps a 'shameless' act of hegemony: FM

The US will eventually taste the bitter fruit of choosing self-interest over market principles, intl rules, which will only lead to the decline of morality, national image, and intl trust: Chinese FM on US executive orders targeting TikTok and WeChat .

The US frequently uses national security as an excuse to abuse state power and groundlessly clamp down on related firms, a shameless act of hegemony; China resolutely opposes it: Chinese FM

Biélorussie : entre Poutine et Loukachenko, une complexe relation d’intérêts mutuels

Autre scénario possible : un mouvement qui, comme en Arménie au printemps 2018, a mené au pouvoir de nouveaux dirigeants.
