TikTok, Trump and an Impulse to Act as C.E.O. to Corporate America

WASHINGTON — President Trump campaigned on a promise to run the economy like his business empire. And for almost four years, he has unabashedly wielded the power of the presidency to insert himself into corporate affairs, helping some companies and punishing others in line with his instincts and inclinations.

The Arc of Homeland Security Bends Toward Trump. Chad Wolf Bends With It

Chad F. Wolf had joined the department nearly two decades before as a midlevel staff member to help the sprawling new agency gear up to protect Americans after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. But in February, as the new acting secretary of homeland security, Mr. Wolf introduced himself to most in the United States by announcing on Fox News that New Yorkers were suspended from enrolling in expedited air traveler programs because their state had barred federal immigration enforcement agencies from gaining access to Department of Motor Vehicle records.

‘Long days, long nights’: Washington prepares for a prolonged fight over virus relief.

Tens of millions of Americans have lost crucial unemployment benefits as well as a federal moratorium on evictions, and economists warn that permanent damage could be wrought on the economy without action. Democrats are proposing a $3 trillion rescue plan that would include restoring $600-per-week jobless aid payments that expired on Friday and extending them through January, while Republicans are pushing a $1 trillion package that would reduce those payments substantially.

The Mayor Blames the Virus for Shootings. Here’s What Crime Data Shows.

In the past few weeks, Mayor Bill de Blasio and his police commissioner, Dermot F. Shea, have blamed the steep rise in shootings in New York City on a breakdown in the criminal justice system that they contend has allowed criminals back out on the streets. The analysis, obtained by The New York Times, suggests the state’s new bail law and the mass release of inmates from city jails in recent months because of the coronavirus outbreak played almost no role in the spike in shootings.

Turkish Aggression Is NATO’s ‘Elephant in the Room’

Despite being a NATO member, Turkey has bought Russian air defense. And a recent push into Libya and its energy ambitions nearly led to armed conflicts with France and Greece.

The evolution of Extinction Rebellion

The protests turned XR into a movement of global significance, with scores of XR groups springing up in cities around the world, as well as in towns and cities across the UK. By the end, XR’s representatives were sitting down for talks with senior politicians and ministers in the UK. Supporters and funders – many of whom had been sceptical before April – showered praise and money on the new movement, and in the weeks that followed, the UK parliament and scores of councils around the country declared a climate emergency. XR had changed the conversation around the crisis. Now it had a big question to answer: what next?

US should explain its global biomilitary activities amid intl concern: Chinese FM

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday urged the US to explain its biomilitary activities overseas, observe the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) under the UN and stop obstructing negotiations for a protocol related to the convention.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at Tuesday's routine press conference in response to a question on South Korean media reports about US military stationed in the East Asian country violating the BWC.

The military actions have triggered local protests demanding that the military laboratories be closed and the related troops dispersed.

The US is the only country that builds bio labs across the world and collects bio materials and resources outside its own territory. It is also the only country that stands in the way of negotiations for a protocol that includes a verification regime for the BWC, the spokesperson said

HSBC's trust deficit just the start of its woes

HSBC reported on Monday that its net profits plunged nearly 96 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2020, while its post-tax profits for the first half dropped 69 percent year-on-year to $3.1 billion

That is because the lender is not just exposed to the pandemic's impact, but also to geopolitical factors resulting from its reported involvement in the US' political ploys.

Despite its recent efforts to pander to China by vocally backing the national security law for Hong Kong, many believe that the bank's precedent of bending its business principles and ethics to follow the US government's order suggests it is untrustworthy. Against the backdrop of the deteriorating China-US relationship, some observers believe there is a possibility that the bank may betray certain Chinese companies again in the future.

While HSBC is one of the three note-issuing banks in Hong Kong, the financial systems of both Hong Kong and the mainland would be able to deal with HSBC's absence in some extreme scenarios. After all, it is not HSBC that makes Hong Kong a financial hub, but Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland that offer the most support to its business.
