Australia has pledged to increase defence cooperation with the US in the South China Sea – but stopped short of making any specific new commitment on freedom of navigation operations, despite American pressure.
The two allies have also decided during high-level talks in Washington to set up a working group to push back at false information across the Indo-Pacific region, warning that “state-sponsored malicious disinformation and interference in democratic processes are significant and evolving threats”.
While the joint statement expressed “deep concern” over a range of actions taken by China – including a “campaign of repression of Uyghurs” and undermining of freedoms in Hong Kong – Australia’s foreign affairs minister, Marise Payne, said her country had “no intention of injuring” its important relationship with Beijing.
Loss of bees causes shortage of key food crops, study finds
Species of wild bees, such as bumblebees, are suffering from a loss of flowering habitat, the use of toxic pesticides and, increasingly, the climate crisis. Managed honeybees, meanwhile, are tended to by beekeepers, but have still been assailed by disease, leading to concerns that the three-quarters of the world’s food crops dependent upon pollinators could falter due to a lack of bees.

Russia used English-language sites to spread Covid-19 disinformation, US officials say
Two Russians who have held senior roles in Moscow’s military intelligence service known as the GRU have been identified as responsible for a disinformation effort reaching American and western audiences, US government officials said on Tuesday.
Though US officials have warned before about the spread of disinformation tied to the pandemic, they went further on Tuesday by singling out a particular information agency that is registered in Russia, InfoRos and that operates a series of websites – InfoRos.ru, Infobrics.org and OneWorld.press – that have leveraged the pandemic to promote anti-western objectives and to spread disinformation.
World’s largest nuclear fusion project begins assembly in France
The world’s largest nuclear fusion project began its five-year assembly phase on Tuesday in southern France, with the first ultra-hot plasma expected to be generated in late 2025.
The €20bn (£18.2bn) Iter project will replicate the reactions that power the sun and is intended to demonstrate fusion power can be generated on a commercial scale. Nuclear fusion promises clean, unlimited power but, despite 60 years of research, it has yet to overcome the technical challenges of harnessing such extreme amounts of energy.

'More dangerous every day': Land rights defenders killings surge
At least 212 people were killed last year while defending their land from being taken over by industry, Global Witness said on Wednesday, the deadliest year since the advocacy group began compiling data in 2012.
More than half the killings were in Colombia and the Philippines and indigenous people made up 40 percent of the victims, the British-based group said in its annual report. It was a significant rise on 2018, when 164 killings were recorded.
Iran fires missile at mock US aircraft carrier during exercise
Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard fired a missile from a helicopter targeting a replica US aircraft carrier in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, state television reported on Tuesday, an exercise aimed at threatening the US amid tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The exercises - dubbed "Prophet Muhammad 14th" - were held near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane for a fifth of global oil output.
After south Lebanon flare-up, more questions than answers
Beirut, Lebanon - UN peacekeepers are investigating an incident on Lebanon's southern border after Israel said it foiled a Hezbollah "infiltration attempt", though the Iran-backed group said the allegations were "absolutely not true".
Fears of a confrontation have risen significantly since Israel reportedly killed a Hezbollah fighter in Syria last week in a series of air raids in that country.

Oil flows through Egypt's Sumed pipeline slow dramatically
Egypt’s Sumed pipeline was designed to pump 2.5 million barrels of Persian Gulf crude from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean every day. Since May, a slump in oil demand and OPEC+ oil production cuts seem to have combined to slash flows to about a quarter of that.
Acting as an artery in the global oil trade, the Sumed gets Middle Eastern oil to the north African coast, allowing giant supertankers - that would otherwise sit too deep in the water - to continue to use the Suez Canal. From the Mediterranean port of Sidi Kerir, it can then be shipped to refineries across Europe and North America. The slump in flows reflects European fuel consumption that plunged by as much as 90% in some instances and, in response to that, the deepest output reductions in history by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and allied producers.

China never wants a cold war. Unlike the US-Soviet Union rivalry, China doesn't focus on competing ideologies or political systems.
Some US hawks won't let go of their cold war playbook and are trying to direct a new play based on it. In the end, they will realize it is nothing more than an illusion.

What should China do as G7 starts targeting digital yuan?
Group of 7 (G7) countries are reportedly promoting cooperation on central bank digital currencies (CBDC) and will discuss the issue at the annual G7 summit that is scheduled for late August or early September. The topic is China's lead in CBDC research and its potential challenge to the US dollar's dominance, according to media reports. The topic is full of hostility against China.
China's digital yuan has already started trials in small amount retail scenarios in southern cities such as Shenzhen and Suzhou. But even such small-scale domestic trials have already been overly interpreted and politicized by the G7. It is foreseeable that it will be difficult for China's digital currency to avoid being targeted by countries such as the US in the future.
academics should avoid making impractical interpretations about China's CBDC. The digital yuan, which has the purpose of serving the digitalization upgrade of the financial system, has been misinterpreted as a challenge to the US dollar. This has put pressure on the digital currency.
Second, China should accelerate trials of the digital currency to improve the payment technology's reliability and application. The digital yuan's application should be well integrated with existing payment platforms including Alipay and WeChat Pay.

Separatistas de Yemen renuncian a autonomía y apoyan acuerdo de paz
Los separatistas yemeníes abandonaron el miércoles (29.07.2020) su declaración de autogobierno en el sur del país y se comprometieron a implementar un acuerdo de paz con el gobierno, que se encuentra estancado y que ha sido negociado por Arabia Saudí, dijo un portavoz.
Arabia Saudita declaró en la madrugada del miércoles que había propuesto un plan para "acelerar" la implementación del acuerdo, que exige la la creación de un nuevo gobierno en un plazo de 30 días y el nombramiento de un nuevo gobernador y director de seguridad de Aden, según la prensa oficial saudita.

Piñera reforzó su gabinete luego de una dura derrota en el Parlamento
El presidente de Chile, Sebastián Piñera, concretó el quinto cambio de gabinete de su segundo mandato luego de sufrir una dura derrota en el Parlamento que desnudó importantes diferencias en la coalición de gobierno. Entre las modificaciones más importantes, Piñera nombró al senador de la Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI) y exalcalde de la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990), Víctor Pérez, como ministro del Interior en reemplazo de quien había surgido como una figura renovadora de la política local, Gonzalo Blumel. La Central Obrera Bolviana dio 72 horas para que las elecciones vuelvan al 6 de septiembre
La Central Obrera Boliviana (COB) convocó a una cabildo abierto en La Paz para debatir la postergación de las elecciones decidida por el Tribunal Supremo Electoral (TSE). Del encuentro participaron organizaciones sindicales y sociales de todo el país. El cabildo resolvió dar 72 horas al TSE para que de marcha atrás con la medida y vuelva a la fecha del 6 septiembre. De no hacerlo a partir del 3 de agosto habrá una huelga indefinida en todo el país, informó el Secretario Ejecutivo de la COB Juan Carlos Huarachi. La movilización continuó hasta el centro de La Paz. Además se replicó en varias regiones del país como Cochabamba y Potosí. Desde el gobierno de facto pidieron que la justicia actúe contra el candidato a presidente por el Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), Luis Arce, por organizar una marcha en medio de la pandemia.

Áñez decretó el estado de "calamidad pública" en Bolivia
El gobierno de facto de Jeanine Áñez decretó (foto) el estado de “calamidad pública”. Con esta medida pretende que el Banco Central de Bolivia (BCB) le apruebe un préstamo sin tener que contar con la aprobación de la Asamblea Legislativa. Sin embargo la norma no establece el monto específico que requerirá a la arcas del Estado. En paralelo la pandemia del coronavirus sigue golpeando a Bolivia que superó los 70.000 casos confirmados.
