Global report: Bolivia's president and Venezuela's Socialist party leader test positive for Covid-19
Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela’s number two official and the leader of the Socialist party, announced his diagnosis on social media on Thursday evening and said he was in self-isolation. “We will prevail!!” tweeted the influential Chavista.
Jeanine Añez, Bolivia’s rightwing interim president, said she had received the same diagnosis. “I’ve tested positive for Covid-19,” tweeted Añez, who controversially took power after Evo Morales was forced into exile last year
The announcements came two days after Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, said he had tested positive and underline the extent to which Covid-19 is sweeping across the region.
US imposes sanctions on senior Chinese officials over Uighur abuses
Secretary of state Mike Pompeo said in a statement: “The United States will not stand idly by as the Chinese Communist party carries out human rights abuses targeting Uighurs, ethnic Kazakhs and members of other minority groups in Xinjiang, to include forced labor, arbitrary mass detention, and forced population control, and attempts to erase their culture and Muslim faith.”
Pompeo’s statement, accompanied by a similar announcement from the Treasury department, said additional visa restrictions were being placed on other party officials believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, the detentions.China responded with a statement saying it will impose reciprocal measures. The US action “marked a serious interference in China’s affairs and was deeply detrimental to bilateral relations”, foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters.
Top US general vows response if military confirms reports of Russian bounties
Gen Mark Milley, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, told the House armed services committee, that the Pentagon was committed to discovering whether Russian military intelligence had paid for attacks on American soldiers in Afghanistan.
“We’re going to get to the bottom of this bounty thing. If in fact there are bounties, I’m an outraged general, just like every one of us in uniform is,” Milley said. “That’s a real big deal. We don’t have that level of fidelity yet, but we’re still looking.”
He suggested that the US may not be responding to the reports as robustly as necessary in non-military ways.
“The issue is at the strategic level,” he said. “Is there diplomatic, and informational and economic … sanctions, are there démarches, are there phone calls, is there pressure, those sorts of things. And I can tell you that some of that is done. Are we doing as much as we could or should? Perhaps not, not only to the Russians but to others.”

US sanctions top Chinese official over Xinjiang crackdown
The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on Chen Quanguo, a member of China's powerful Politburo, and three other senior officials, accusing them of serious human rights abuses against the Uighur Muslim minority in a move likely to further increase tensions between Washington and Beijing.
Chen is the Communist Party Secretary in the far western region of Xinjiang, where the UN estimates about one million Uighurs have been detained in re-education camps that China describes as vocational skills training centres necessary to combat "extremism".
'Not sustainable': Ford says Mexico's virus curbs hurt US plants
Ford Motor Co said new staffing restrictions imposed on plants producing car parts in the Mexican state of Chihuahua are "not sustainable," the latest sign United States-based automakers are still reeling from coronavirus lockdowns in Mexico.

Removed US prosecutor says Trump official pressed him to resign
A top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, who was removed last month as his office led a probe into President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudolph Giuliani told legislators on Thursday that United States Attorney General William Barr had pressured him to resign.
In written comments submitted as part of a congressional inquiry, former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman said he was warned by Barr that if he did not leave he would be fired, which "would not be good for my resume or future job prospects".

The comments came after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's remarks on Wednesday concerning China's decision to agree to experts from the WHO coming to Beijing to trace for the origins of the virus, saying that "the WHO needs to be free to do its real work" and "we need real answers not perfunctory political solutions."

Chinese officials, medical experts expect more information from Kazakhstan on 'unknown pneumonia'
The Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan on Thursday warned Chinese citizens living in the country of a local pneumonia of unknown source, which local media reported has a "much higher" fatality rate than COVID-19. Organizations including Kazakhstan's health department are studying the "virus of this pneumonia," the embassy said, quoting media.
The unknown pneumonia in Kazakhstan caused 1,772 deaths in the first six months of the year, with 628 in June alone and including Chinese citizens, the embassy said in a statement on its WeChat account on Thursday, citing Kazakh media reports.
