Coronavirus report: global cases pass 12m as US daily tally breaks world record
The number of confirmed coronavirus infections worldwide passed 12 million on Thursday, as cases continue to grow by roughly one million a week. Thursday’s milestone was spurred by the United States recording the highest one-day increase in cases anywhere in the world since the pandemic began, with just over 60,000 cases reported in 24 hours, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.
In South America, Chile’s cases climbed above 300,000, overtaking the UK. Unions at Chile’s Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, said on Wednesday that nearly 3,000 workers had been infected, prompting renewed calls for more safety measures at the company’s sprawling operations. Chile will begin easing lockdown measures in two southern regions on Monday with 800,000 people able to resume some of their activities and those over 75 able to go out once a day.
Mexico on Wednesday posted a record for new cases reported on a single day, with 6,995, bringing its overall tally of infections to 275,003, health ministry data showed.

Closed borders, curfews and travel restrictions have disrupted food supplies and incomes in already fragile countries, forcing an extra million people closer to famine in Afghanistan and heightening the humanitarian disaster in Yemen, where two-thirds already live in hunger.
Oxfam said that up to 12,000 people could die from hunger every day globally – 2,000 more than died from Covid-19 each day in April.
Oxfam said countries with existing problems, such as South Sudan and Syria, were already seeing hunger worsen but there was also concern for middle-income countries such as India and Brazil.
Mass unemployment was affecting all countries, but informal labourers were suffering the most, often unable to travel to work.
Duterte's anti-terror law a dark new chapter for Philippines, experts warn
The act, which lawyers say uses a vague and overly broad definition of terrorism, permits warrantless arrests and allows authorities to hold individuals for weeks without charge. The government says the powers will allow it to respond to threats by militants, but rights groups warn the law could be used to lock up peaceful critics, and may even limit access to humanitarian aid. Trump's warm words were a stark contrast to the days when he called Mexicans "rapists" and railed against migrants entering the US illegally. Lopez Obrador had cordial words for Trump, too, saying that while they have disagreed, it was better to find common ground and avoid slinging insults.
Russia attempt to halve UN cross-border aid to Syria fails
A Russian bid to get the United Nations to reduce cross-border humanitarian aid to war-torn Syria was voted down by the Security Council on Wednesday with just four nations on the 15-member body voting in its favour, an official said.
Russia put forward the proposal after it joined China on Tuesday in vetoing a one-year extension to aid deliveries from Turkey through the two border crossings at Bab al-Salam, which leads to the Aleppo region, and Bab al-Hawa, which serves the Idlib region.
Brazil's President Bolsonaro vetoes COVID-19 aid for Indigenous
Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro has vetoed provisions of a law that obligated the federal government to provide drinking water, disinfectants and a guarantee of hospital beds to Indigenous communities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The president's office on Wednesday said those provisions in the law, approved by Congress, were "against the public interest" and "unconstitutional", by creating expenses for the federal government without new sources of revenue to cover them.
US denounces UN report on Iran general's 'unlawful' killing
The United States lashed out on Wednesday at a United Nations probe into the American drone attack that killed a top Iranian general, saying it gave "a pass to terrorists".
US President Donald Trump ordered the killing of Iran's General Qassem Soleimani in a January attack near Baghdad's international airport. The incident stoked fears of an all-out conflict between Iran and the US.
UN chief: Foreign interference in Libya at 'unprecedented levels'
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that the conflict in Libya has entered a new phase "with foreign interference reaching unprecedented levels".
Libya was plunged into chaos by the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled and killed its longtime leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

WHO withdrawal US’ worst global retreat ever: Global Times editorial
The US announced on Tuesday its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), which will take effect on July 6, 2021.
Such an erratic move comes after the WHO refused to "hold China accountable." US election politics and partisan interests have affected US foreign policy in such a brutal and arbitrary way, which is appalling.
We condemn Washington's move to withdraw from the WHO at this critical juncture. Its decision will inevitably split world unity that is much needed in the ongoing virus fight.
Washington's withdrawal from the WHO is the worst among its retreat from various international organizations and treaties. The world should hold Washington accountable for betraying the common interests of humanity.

Une régulation durable revient à rechercher le juste équilibre entre, d’un côté, le principe cardinal de liberté et, de l’autre, les limitations susceptibles de lui être apportées pour garantir l’intérêt général. Souhaitons-nous une liberté d’expression absolue ? Ou acceptons-nous de lui fixer des limites ? Ce débat est au centre des discussions réglementaires sur les enjeux transnationaux, la lutte contre les contenus haineux et la désinformation. Il a également été au fondement de diverses initiatives législatives nationales, telles que la loi française contre la manipulation de l’information (« loi fake news » ou « loi infox » de décembre 2018), ou la loi allemande sur la haine en ligne (NetzDG) de janvier 2018.
La Chine met en garde la France après les propos de Jean-Yves Le Drian sur Hongkong

Alors que la Russie a reconstitué une force d’opposition russe, il n’y aura pas d’unité européenne et de crédibilité de la dissuasion sans l’engagement durable des Etats-Unis. Le fait est d’autant plus à rappeler que le Kremlin conduit des « guerres mémorielles » à l’encontre de la Pologne et des Etats baltes, voire de la Roumanie. Ce révisionnisme historique est lourd de menaces subversives et militaires.
L’OTAN couvre aussi les approches maritimes de l’Europe, y compris « la plus grande Méditerranée » dont le Moyen-Orient participe. Dans cet ensemble spatial, le « partage du fardeau » que les Etats-Unis demandent ouvre des opportunités stratégiques.

Italian authorities stunned the world by announcing the "Islamic State" was trying to ship €1 billion worth of amphetamines into Europe. But after analysts raised doubts, eyes turn to President Bashar Assad's regime.
It was slick PR. But there was something even more remarkable about the accompanying statement. It claimed the drugs were shipped from Syria by the terrorist group "Islamic State" (IS).
Another stumbling block for the Guardia di Finanza's claim was the port from which they said the captagon had been shipped. Latakia, a harbor city on Syria's Mediterranean coast, has remained a safe distance from IS' clutches. It always has been in the hands of President Assad.

Women from Kenya and Nigeria in running for WTO's top job
Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a development economist and former finance minister, and Amina Mohamed, Kenya's sports, culture and heritage minister, are among seven candidates to be the next director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Okonjo-Iweala is a development and finance specialist who spent a 25-year career at the World Bank as a development economist, rising to the position of managing director.
Mohamed, who is from an ethnic Somali family, also held the position of foreign minister from 2013 to 2018, becoming the first woman to hold this position and the first Muslim woman in Kenya's Cabinet.

Bolivia: crisis sanitaria y lawfare
Todo comenzó luego de las elecciones presidenciales llevadas a cabo el pasado mes de octubre, donde quien debía ser veedor del proceso electoral resultó ser su principal saboteador y factor aglutinante de los grupos opositores: estamos hablando del lamentable papel que cumplió el secretario general de la Organización de los Estados Americanos, Luis Almagro.
Después de ocho meses de los referidos sucesos, como si fuera poco, la grave situación político-institucional del país también tiene su correlato en el sistema de salud. La región se encuentra ante una crisis sanitaria sin precedentes y el país hermano enfrenta los momentos más duros de la pandemia que azota al mundo, con más de 1.500 muertos y 24.000 contagiados.

Uruguay aprobó una ley de corte punitivista
El Parlamento de Uruguay aprobó la Ley de Urgente Consideración (LUC), un texto con 476 artículos considerado esencial por el presidente Luis Lacalle Pou. Luego de ser aprobado por Diputados el sábado pasado, la LUC volvió al Senado donde consiguió 18 votos sobre un total de 30. La medida contó con el apoyo de la alianza de derecha que llevó a Lacalle Pou a la presidencia. No respaldaron el texto los legisladores de la coalición de centro-izquierda Frente Amplio (FA). Sostienen que la ley es de corte punitivista y representa un retroceso en materia de derechos para los uruguayos.
La ley modifica decenas de otros cuerpos legales en temas tan amplios como educación, seguridad, medio ambiente, salud y derecho a huelga. El gobierno lo envío al Parlamento bajo el rótulo de "urgente consideración" por lo que el Poder Legislativo contaba sólo con 90 días para su aprobación. Sobre ese aspecto versó una de las críticas más fuertes que hizo el FA. "La aprobación de la LUC tiene consecuencias en la calidad democrática porque realmente en esta ley no se pudo dar un debate profundo como se merece", denunció el senador Charles Carrera.
