THE NEW YORK TIMES

A sixth day of protest gives way to a night of unrest.

Fires burned outside the White House, the streets of New York City were gripped by mayhem and stores in Santa Monica, Calif., were looted after another day of peaceful protests descended into lawlessness in major cities across the United States.

The White House goes dark, and Trump blames antifa for violence.

Tweeting from a White House that had been darkened amid protests in the nation’s capital the evening before, President Trump emerged on Monday morning to blame the anti-fascist movement antifa for protests across the country and urged his supporters to look forward to the November election.

On Sunday night, the police fired tear gas and unleashed flash grenades near the White House to disperse protesters who had smashed the windows of prominent buildings, overturned cars and set fires, with smoke seen rising from close to the Washington Monument. The White House went dark, turning off almost all of its external lights, as protesters seethed outside.

As Virus Toll Preoccupies U.S., Rivals Test Limits of American Power

WASHINGTON — With the United States preoccupied by the sobering reality of more than 100,000 Americans dead from the coronavirus, China has pushed in recent weeks to move troops into disputed territory with India, continue aggressive actions in the South China Sea and rewrite the rules of how it will control Hong Kong.

At roughly the same time, Russian fighter jets roared dangerously close to American Navy planes over the Mediterranean Sea, while the country’s space forces conducted an antisatellite missile test clearly aimed at sending the message that Moscow could blind U.S. spy satellites and take down GPS and other communications systems. Russia’s military cyberunits were busy, too, the National Security Agency reported, with an innovative attack that may portend accelerated planning for a strike on email systems this election year.

George Floyd: curfews fail to deter a new wave of protests across US

Cities across the US saw further unrest on Sunday as protests against police brutality and the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis raged on. Fires burned in the nation’s capital, including near the White House, on the sixth day of nationwide demonstrations.

Amid rising anger and frustration at the repeated failure of America’s policing system to address the staggering number of deaths of unarmed African Americans at the hands of officers, mayors of more than a dozen cities imposed curfews and governors of six states called in the national guard.

But the move did not deter protesters from gathering again in many cities as Sunday night drew in. Since Floyd’s death last week, more than 4,100 protesters have been arrested.

'Mr President, don't go hide': China goads US over George Floyd protests

After days of chaotic scenes in the US, on Sunday China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying posted “I can’t breathe” – Floyd’s last words – to Twitter, with a screenshot of her American counterpart criticising China’s crackdown on Hong Kong.

In a series of tweets and editorials over the weekend, Hu and his paper accused the US of hypocrisy.

“Mr President, don’t go hide behind the secret service,” said Hu (editor-in-chief of nationalist tabloid Global Times). “Go to talk to the demonstrators seriously. Negotiate with them, just like you urged Beijing to talk to Hong Kong rioters.”

Wars without end: why is there no peaceful solution to so much global conflict?

Today’s wars are mostly undeclared, undefined and inglorious affairs typically involving multiple parties, foreign governments, proxy forces, covert methods and novel weapons. They are conducted without regard for civilian lives, the Geneva conventions regulating armed conflict, or the interests of host populations in whose name they are fought.

Neat and tidy endings, even if sometimes illusory, are rarer these days. According to a survey published last week by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, 60% of armed conflicts have been active for at least a decade and peace-making prospects globally are in decline.

Trump says US will designate Antifa 'terrorist organisation'

President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States would designate Antifa as a "terrorist organisation", despite concerns by legal experts, who say the president has no legal authority for such a designation and question how it would be implemented.

Antifa, short for anti-fascists, is an umbrella term for a far-left-leaning movement with no designated leadership that is opposed to far-right ideologies. Some anti-fascists confront neo-Nazis and white supremacist groups at demonstrations.

ProteGO Safe allows users to perform self-assessment of the risk related to contracting COVID-19, but the core functionality of the application is contact tracing by broadcasting identifiers (IDs) and scanning the environment in search of signals emitted by other phones equipped with the app. Also, the program saves the history of IDs of smartphones detected nearby.

US protests expose a ‘failed state’ as officials resort to blame game

As the world watches the US being confronted with massive riots, looting, chaos and heightened violence, US officials, instead of reflecting on the systematic problems in their society that led to such a crisis, have returned to their old "blame game" against left-wingers, "fake news" media and "external forces."

Using the racial problem to polarize American society is a long-standing strategy for Trump to consolidate his support from less-educated and low-income white Americans, Lü Xiang, a research fellow on US studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, told the Global Times on Monday.

It will be a tough year for the US, and the Trump administration is unable to push forward its "major power competition" with China, as its priority is to clean the big mess at home, Lü noted.

Unrest 101: HK rioters offer online tutorials on setting up roadblocks, evading police amid George Floyd protests

It appears that with the US encouraging protests in Hong Kong and other parts of the world, including Nancy Pelosi calling the riots in Hong Kong last year "a beautiful sight," the chickens have come home to roost in the US.

Kylie and many other similar Twitter accounts seemingly from Hong Kong have seen an extremely high volume of interaction on the platform. Suspicions that Hong Kong mobs are sharing their "experience" with US rioters are obviously not groundless.

On another tweet, Kylie said, "Hong Kong protesters are committed to 'being water' - fluid and shape-shifting, disbanding as quickly as they regroup, always maintaining an element of surprise over their heavier, less mobile opponents."

Huawei hiring global genius youth amid US chip ban
