'Crime against humanity': Trump condemned for WHO funding freeze
Leading health experts have labelled Donald Trump’s decision to cut funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) as a “crime against humanity” and a “damnable” act that will cost lives.
The move also drew a rebuke from the head of the United Nations, who said the WHO was “absolutely critical to the world’s efforts to win the war against Covid-19”.
Late on Tuesday Trump declared US funding would be put on hold for 60-90 days pending a review “to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus”. The US is the single largest contributor to the WHO.
Coronavirus distancing may need to continue until 2022, say experts
Physical distancing measures may need to be in place intermittently until 2022, scientists have warned in an analysis that suggests there could be resurgences of Covid-19 for years to come.
The paper, published in the journal Science, concludes that a one-time lockdown will not be sufficient to bring the pandemic under control and that secondary peaks could be larger than the current one without continued restrictions.
One scenario predicted a resurgence could occur as far in the future as 2025 in the absence of a vaccine or effective treatment.

US military chief: 'Weight of evidence' that Covid-19 did not originate in a lab
The Pentagon’s top general has said that US intelligence has looked into the possibility that the coronavirus outbreak could have started in a Chinese laboratory, but that the “weight of evidence” so far pointed towards “natural” origins.
The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Gen Mark Milley, was speaking on the day of a Washington Post report about state department cables in 2018 in which US diplomats raised safety concerns about the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) which was conducting studies of coronavirus from bats.
“There’s a lot of rumour and speculation in a wide variety of media, blog sites, etc,” Milley told reporters at the Pentagon on Tuesday. “It should be no surprise to you that we’ve taken a keen interest in that, and we’ve had a lot of intelligence look at that. And I would just say at this point, it’s inconclusive, although the weight of evidence seems to indicate natural. But we don’t know for certain.”

BAE Systems sold £15bn worth of arms to Saudis during Yemen assault
Britain’s leading arms manufacturer BAE Systems sold £15bn worth of arms and services to the Saudi military during the last five years, the period covered by Riyadh’s involvement in the deadly bombing campaign in the war in Yemen.
Figures taken from the company’s most recent annual report and newly analysed by the Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT) reveal the British arms maker generated £2.5bn in revenues from the Saudi military during the whole of 2019.
That takes the total sales of BAE arms and services to the Saudi military for the period between 2015 and 2019 – including the period from the start of the Saudi bombing in March 2015 – to slightly over £15bn, or 17.3% over the five years.

La Chine, elle aussi, doit annuler des dettes africaines
Editorial. Emmanuel Macron a eu raison, lundi 13 avril, d’appeler à « aider » l’Afrique en « annulant massivement sa dette ». Cela sonne comme une invitation à la Chine, qui est l’un des principaux créanciers de l’Afrique et l’un des plus intransigeants aussi.
Seule une procédure incluant l’ensemble des créanciers peut donc réellement desserrer l’étau sur les pays africains. Cela suppose que Pékin sorte de l’opacité de ses relations financières avec le continent. Si la Chine veut consolider son image de bienveillance en Afrique, elle doit accepter ce que les pays riches ont fini par admettre : annuler des dettes africaines.

Shares in online delivery giant Amazon have shot up to their highest ever level, amid the coronavirus pandemic. Despite some negative publicity, the trading price has soared — earning billions for founder Jeff Bezos.

La OMS le respondió a Donald Trump

Bolivia militariza a Santa Cruz por el virus
El departamento boliviano de Santa Cruz de la Sierra amaneció con un amplio despliegue militar para hacer cumplir el confinamiento obligatorio. Miles de militares y policías controlan desde el martes los accesos a la ciudad y los desplazamientos en su interior, con puntos de vigilancia fijos y móviles. La región de Santa Cruz, la más extensa y poblada de Bolivia, es el principal foco del coronavirus en el país. El encierro masivo que impuso la pandemia de Covid-19 no hará excepciones. Esta es una verdadera crisis mundial, ya que ningún país está a salvo, afirmó ayer el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) en voz de su directora de investigación, Gita Gopinath, al dar comienzo a las Reuniones de Primavera.
La economía global no crecerá 3.3 por ciento en 2020 como se estimó tres meses atrás. Ahora, en el mejor de los casos, se contraerá 3 por ciento este año. Incluso existe el riesgo de caer hasta 7.4, dependiendo de la evolución de la pandemia.
