Protesters Mass in Baghdad, Demanding U.S. Leave Iraq
BAGHDAD — Throngs of Iraqis gathered on the streets of the capital, Baghdad, in the early hours of Friday to protest the United States military presence in the country at the behest of a leading populist cleric and of armed forces with ties to Iran.
The demonstration comes three weeks after the United States launched a drone strike in capital that killed the Iranian commander Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani and a prominent member of the Iraqi government, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, with close ties to the Popular Mobilization Forces, some of whom are close to Iran.
Days later, at the urging of the Iraqi prime minister, the Parliament endorsed a measure demanding the expulsion of foreign forces from Iraq, which in the minds of most Iraqis meant American troops. The protest on Friday was the first designed specifically to denounce the American presence in Iraq since the parliamentary measure.

London Police Amp Up Surveillance With Real-Time Facial Recognition
LONDON — London’s police department said on Friday that it would begin using facial recognition technology in the city to identify people off the street in real time with video cameras, adopting a level of surveillance that is rare outside of China.
The decision is a major development in the use of a technology that has set off a worldwide debate about the balance between security and privacy. Police departments contend that the software gives them a technological edge to catch criminals that may otherwise avoid detection. Critics say the technology is an invasion of privacy and is being rolled out without adequate public discussion.
Britain has been at the forefront of the debate. In a country where CCTV cameras line the streets, police surveillance has traditionally been more accepted than in other Western countries.

The authorities on Friday greatly expanded a travel lockdown in central China to include 12 cities near the center of the outbreak, effectively penning in 35 million residents — nearly the population of Canada — in an effort to contain the dangerous virus.
The new limits — abruptly decreed ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, China’s busiest travel season — were an extraordinary step that underlined the governing Communist Party’s deepening fears about the outbreak of a little-understood coronavirus.
Just one day after China restricted travel in and from the center of the outbreak, Wuhan, a city of 11 million and the capital of Hubei Province, and four nearby towns, the government announced plans to suspend public transportation services covering more than half the population of the province.

Turkey sending military to train UN-backed govt’s forces in Libya – Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that he is sending military personnel to Libya to train the forces loyal to the UN-backed Government of National Accord.
Erdogan announced the move on Friday, days after he apparently backed off on an earlier promise to deploy ground troops to the war-torn African country. The Turkish leader told journalists on Monday that a group of military “advisers” had been sent to Libya in the troops’ stead.
The Turkish personnel will train the forces of Fayez al-Sarraj, who heads the Tripoli-based and UN-backed Government of National Accord. The GNA has been engaged in a prolonged conflict with the Tobruk-based Libyan National Army, led by General Khalifa Haftar.

US to grant $35 million to promote its fake news bubble in Syria & control local media
Although Western media has a shoddy track record of lying on Syria (and Libya, Iraq...), the US State Department will pump $35 million more into future war propaganda on Syria, under the guise of promoting honest reporting.
A US State Department grant, “Support for Independent Media in Syria,” is unabashed in stating one of its main goals is “to advance U.S. Government policy objectives in Syria.”
That is probably the sole honest clause in the grant description: that it is in the end about US self-serving, hegemonic objectives in Syria.

Duterte threatens to end Philippines-US ‘visiting forces’ pact, over ally's visa denial
President Rodrigo Duterte has renewed a threat to terminate an accord that allows US forces to train in the Philippines, unless Washington restored the visa of a political ally of his, who has been linked to alleged human rights violations.
Duterte said in an expletives-laced speech on Thursday night that he would give notice to the US that he would be terminating the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), if the reported cancellation of the entry visa of Sen. Ronald dela Rosa was not reversed within a month.
The VFA security accord, which took effect in 1999, provides legal cover for American troops who enter the Philippines for joint training with Filipino troops.

Donald Trump put his personal political interests ahead of his country’s national security and free and fair elections, prosecutors at his impeachment trial on Capitol Hill said on Thursday, telling US senators: “This conduct is not ‘America first’. It is Donald Trump first.”
Jerry Nadler, the chair of the House of Representatives’ judiciary committee, argued that Trump should be convicted of two articles of impeachment passed by the House last month – abuse of power and obstruction of Congress – for pressuring Ukraine to investigate his 2020 Democratic rival Joe Biden last year, and obstructing an investigation into the affair.
“This presidential stonewalling of Congress is unprecedented in the 238-year history of our constitutional republic,” Nadler told the Senate. “It puts even President [Richard] Nixon to shame.”

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced its symbolic “doomsday clock” has moved forward to 100 seconds to midnight, the closest to catastrophe that the scientists have judged the world to be at any point since its creation in 1947, at the outset of the cold war.
“The world needs to wake up. Our planet faces two simultaneous existential threats,” said Mary Robinson, chair of an independent group of global leaders called The Elders, and the former president of Ireland and former UN high commissioner of human rights.

Donald Trump invites Israeli leaders to Washington to hear peace plan details
Mike Pence, the US vice-president who is visiting Jerusalem for a Holocaust remembrance forum, said after a meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu that he had asked the leader to fly to Washington next week.
“President Trump asked me to extend an invitation to Prime Minister Netanyahu to come to the White House next week to discuss regional issues as well as the prospect of peace here in the Holy Land,” he said. Opposition leader Benny Gantz would also visit, he added, although it was not clear if at the same time.
No Palestinian representatives appeared to have been invited.

North Korea appoints hardline ex-army officer as new foreign minister
After days of speculation, the KCNA state news agency confirmed on Friday that Ri Son-gwon – who has little diplomatic experience – had replaced Ri Yong-ho, an English-speaking career diplomat who took part in nuclear talks with Washington.
“Having a former army officer as its top diplomat symbolises the North’s uncompromising stance against Washington,” Ahn Chan-il, a North Korean defector and researcher in Seoul, told Agence France-Presse.
“It’s very rare for someone with military background to be tapped as Pyongyang’s foreign minister.”

A lack of diagnostic tests means many people do not know for sure if their fever is the new strain of coronavirus, which has killed 26 people in China and affected more than 800.

Met police to begin using live facial recognition cameras
The Metropolitan police will start using live facial recognition, Britain’s biggest force has announced.
The decision to deploy the controversial technology, which has been dogged by privacy concerns and questions over its lawfulness, was immediately condemned by civil liberties groups, who described the move as “a breathtaking assault on our rights”.
The Met said the cameras would be linked to a database of suspects. If the system detects someone who is not on the database, their information will not be kept. But if it generates an alert because the person is wanted, an officer will speak to them.
Silkie Carlo, the director of Big Brother Watch, called the decision “an enormous expansion of the surveillance state and a serious threat to civil liberties in the UK”.
US and Europe clash over climate crisis threat on last Davos day
Steve Mnuchin, the US Treasury secretary, said the debate should be about “environmental issues” rather than climate change, that the costs were being over-estimated and that climate was only one of several concerns that needed to be discussed.
He reacted strongly after the president of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, said it was vital to include climate risks into economic forecasts and Germany’s finance minister, Olaf Scholz, said his country was stepping up its fight to reduce the use of carbon.
Mnuchin said technology would provide the solution to reducing carbon emissions and that the costs of action would be lower in 10 years time.
‘Hypocrisy’: 90% of UK-Africa summit’s energy deals were in fossil fuels
The commercial energy deals revealed later were dominated by oil and gas production. The official UK government statement on the summit and a press release failed to mention these, citing only the far smaller support for clean energy. Green Party MP Caroline Lucas said the “hypocrisy of the government’s position is breath-taking”.
The five oil and gas deals announced after the summit are worth £2.1bn, led by oil company Tullow investing £1.2bn in continued oil production in Kenya. The other fossil fuel contracts span the continent from Nigeria to Mozambique and Tunisia to Cote D’Ivoire. In contrast, just £161m in deals – 8% of the total – were related to clean energy, the biggest being for £80m of solar-powered irrigation pumps for Uganda and £50m to help build a solar farm in Kenya.
Other deals struck at the summit included a total of £170m for aircraft and airports and £224m for a new Kenyan gold mine. The biggest deal was £3.2bn for Bombardier to construct and operate two monorail lines in Cairo, Egypt.

'We want them out': Iraq protesters call for US troops exit
Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, after Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr called for a "million-strong" march to demand the withdrawal of US troops from the country, putting the protest-hit city on edge.
The demonstration on Friday added an extra layer to the months-old protest movement that has gripped the capital and the Shia-majority south since October, demanding a government overhaul, early elections and more accountability.
In the early hours of Friday, protesters, including men, women and children of all ages, carried Iraqi flags and marched under grey skies.
Loudspeakers blasted "No, no America!" at a central square in Baghdad. A child held up a poster reading, "Death to America. Death to Israel."
The US military presence in Iraq has become a hot-button issue in the country since a US drone attack killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis on January 3 outside Baghdad's international airport.
Two days later, parliament voted for all foreign troops - including some 5,200 US forces - to leave the country and called on the government to cancel its request for assistance from the US-led coalition that had been working with Baghdad to fight the ISIL (ISIS) group.
The vote was non-binding, however, and a senior US official said on Thursday that Washington had yet to open talks with Baghdad on a troop pullout.

Palestinians warn Israel, US as Trump discusses new 'peace plan'
The Palestinian Authority (PA) has warned Israel and the United States against "crossing red lines" promising not to recognise any Middle East peace plan it had previously rejected as US President Donald Trump prepares to present the plan in the coming days.
Trump said on Thursday he will likely release the long-awaited plan before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits Washington, DC next week.
"Probably we'll release it a little bit prior to that," the US leader told reporters travelling with him to Florida on board Air Force One, referring to the White House meeting on Tuesday.
"It's a great plan. It's a plan that really would work," he added.
The Palestinians, who were not invited to the White House meeting with Netanyahu, immediately rejected the US-hosted talks, as they reject the peace plan itself, which has been in the works since 2017. Its release has been delayed repeatedly.
Fear in Kashmir as top general talks of 'deradicalisation' camps
New Delhi, India - India's newly recruited Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat has courted controversy after he claimed that so-called "deradicalisation" camps are operating in India, drawing a comparison with the internment of Uighurs in China.
"Like what we are seeing in Kashmir ... we saw radicalisation happening," Rawat said addressing the media and foreign delegates in New Delhi last week.
"There are people who have completely been radicalised. These people need to be taken out separately, possibly taken into some deradicalisation camps. We have deradicalisation camps going on in our country."
Rawat's comments have caused a wave of fear among Kashmiris who claim that India wishes to do what the Chinese are doing in Xinjiang province. Human rights groups say more than a million Uighurs have been rounded up in internment camps, that Beijing dubs as "re-education camps", to eradicate so-called religious "extremism".
Qatar 'fake news' law signals 'worrying regression': Rights group
A new law in Qatar that criminalises the publication of statements deemed "false" or "biased" could lead to significant restrictions on freedom of expression, an international rights group has warned.
The law, published on Sunday, allows for imprisonment of up to five years and fines of up to $25,000 for broadcasting, publishing or republishing "false or biased rumours, statements or news, or inflammatory propaganda, domestically or abroad, with the intent to harm national interests, stir up public opinion, or infringe on the social system or the public system of the state".
Amnesty International in a statement on Monday said the law was "repressive" and signals a "worrying regression".
"Qatar already has a host of repressive laws but this new legislation deals another bitter blow to freedom of expression in the country and is a blatant breach of international human rights," said Lynn Maalouf, research director for the Middle East at Amnesty International.
"Qatar's authorities should be repealing such laws, in line with their international legal obligations, not adding more of them."
Qatari authorities did not respond to Al Jazeera's request for comment.

La présidente de la BCE a donc lancé, jeudi 23 janvier, une grande « révision stratégique » de son mandat : « On ne peut pas opérer comme en 2003. » Tout doit être mis sur la table : comment l’inflation est calculée, quels outils de politique monétaire peuvent être utilisés, comment prendre en compte le changement climatique, comment mieux analyser la conjoncture économique, comment communiquer les décisions… L’opération va durer un an, et ses conclusions doivent être présentées en décembre.
Sur le long terme, cette politique a des effets pervers, et Mme Lagarde est la première à le reconnaître. « Je suis inquiète des taux bas parce que cela signifie que la croissance est basse. Je préférerais avoir une croissance bien plus forte et des taux bien plus forts. » Ce faible niveau provoque en particulier la controverse en Allemagne, un pays où les nombreux épargnants n’apprécient guère de voir leurs placements ne rapporter presque rien. Cela alimente aussi la bulle immobilière, en permettant des prêts toujours moins chers, qui poussent les prix à la hausse et créent une cassure entre les générations (les plus jeunes n’arrivent plus à devenir propriétaires).

Le pouvoir n’a pas vu, ni su comprendre, que la société algérienne avait profondément changé, transformée par l’urbanisation et l’évolution des modes de vie, l’accession massive à l’enseignement supérieur, le développement de nouveaux comportements connectés via les réseaux sociaux.
Après dix mois de contestation, l’armée fait face, seule, à la société. Les relais traditionnels du régime, le FLN ou l’UGTA, la centrale syndicale, ont été balayés. Mais l’état-major a tenu, coûte que coûte, à organiser un simulacre d’élection présidentielle pour se revêtir des oripeaux de la légalité constitutionnelle.

“EU leaders sign UK Brexit agreement, what's next?”
The heads of the EU Commission and Council put their signatures on the Brexit deal negotiated with the UK. Here's what else needs to happen before Britain leaves the bloc at the end of the month.
Their signatures act as a formal endorsement and the treaty can now head to the European Parliament on January 29 for a final vote on ratification. The plenary is expected to pass the deal.
Assuming the European Parliament also gives the green light, the UK will formally leave the EU on January 31 with a withdrawal deal.
Following its departure, Britain will enter a transition period until December 31, 2020. During this time, the UK and the EU must agree on its future relationship including on matters such as security, law enforcement and data sharing.
During the one-year transition period, the EU and UK must also agree on a free trade deal that will then determine the conditions of their future economic relationship.
If a trade deal is not ready in time, the UK can expect checks and tariffs on UK products going to the EU.

“Angela Merkel meets Erdogan amid regional tensión” by Deger Akal
During a brief visit, Chancellor Merkel plans to address multiple topics with President Erdogan, from regional conflicts to human rights issues. German politicians believe continuing dialog is crucial.
Germany and Turkey have rarely seen eye-to-eye lately, but instability in the Middle East and North Africa is a growing concern for both countries. Keeping dialog channels open, as well as cooperation is crucial to tackling growing conflicts in the region.
For the German government, one of the major concerns is the possibility of a new wave of refugees. This continues to make Turkey an important actor in the region, which Merkel has to come to terms with.
Turkey sees the YPG forces in northern Syria as a branch of the PKK, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Turkey and the European Union. Not only does Ankara want this aspect to be explicitly recognized but it is also persistent about establishing a safe zone to which Syrian refugees could be returned.
The CDU's Nick said he expects the return of "at least some of the refugees in Turkey to their homelands in Syria" over time. However, Nick once again emphasized that Germany will not support any forced resettlement.
Social Democrat (SPD) lawmaker in charge of foreign policy, Nils Schmid, told DW that the payments allocated within the framework will continue for two more years and both sides will later evaluate how to proceed.
"Maybe a stronger social infrastructure for all people living in Turkey could be the case," said Schmid. "So not just for refugees, but also social and educational infrastructure for Turks themselves," he added.
Migration expert Murat Erdogan, however, said the deal was limited to Syrian migrants and noted that "a new deal is needed."
"Merkel will not only talk about Syrians and the migration flow caused by the fighting in Idlib, but also about the increasing number of people coming from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Iran since last year,” said the expert, stressing that the majority of people going to Greece are no longer from Syria.
The increasing number of migrants is also a heavy burden on the Turkish economy.
Furthermore, recent political tensions between Berlin and Ankara had a detrimental effect on Turkey's economic ties with Germany, its key trade partner. $30.6 billion (€27.6 billion) worth of trade in the first 10 months of 2018 fell back to $27.3 billion in the first 10 months of 2019. German car giant Volkswagen postponed the opening of a new production facility due to Turkey's military operation in northern Syria. Ahead of the visit Bijan Djir-Sarai, the foreign policy spokesman for the opposition Free Democratic Party (FDP) called on Merkel to make it clear to President Erdogan that he "needs to act like a NATO partner, which hasn't been the case for a long time."
He also told DW that "in recent years, there hasn't been any development in bilateral relations. On the contrary, the democratic deficit in Turkey has escalated."

The world economy produces wealth… as well as copious amounts of greenhouse gases, rising inequality and a devastating loss of biodiversity. Corporations now suddenly promise to fix all this. But will they really?
The message companies are trying to send is pretty clear: We have woken up, they want to tell the world. Gone are the days of profit over morals. We now care about the environment. We now care about making this world a better place.
But haven't companies been telling this story for pretty much as long as the World Economic Forum (WEF) has existed? And still the world is not on track to reach the goals it has set for itself — take the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement or the SDGs. So is big business really going to follow through on its promises this time?
In fact, companies may have less and less of a choice in whether they want to go green or not. The Global Risks Report released ahead of the WEF listed environmental factors as the biggest threat to the world order. Extreme weather and natural disasters caused by climate change do hurt business.
And even Larry Fink, the CEO of the world's largest asset manager, BlackRock, recently warned that companies not taking sustainability seriously could run into trouble when looking for financing in the future.
Whether such a market-driven transformation of the economy would happen fast enough is yet another question. Yara's carbon dioxide emissions, for example, have gone up from around 10 million tons in 2013 to 16.6 tons in 2018, despite the new sustainability strategy.
The big idea thrown around at Davos this year was the concept of stakeholder capitalism. It's the notion that companies do not just have a responsibility to generate profits for their investors but to everyone affected by their actions, like their workforce, consumers or the environment.
The economist Mariana Mazzucato is all for it, as long as it's more than just an empty buzzword. “Iraq: Thousands rally calling for US troop withdrawal”
Demonstrators have staged a "million man march" in Baghdad calling for the US to end its military presence in Iraq. Cleric Muqtada al-Sadr called the march after the US drone strike that killed a top Iranian general.
Two days later, parliament approved a nonbinding vote for all foreign troops — including some 5,200 US personnel — to leave the country.
Washington has yet to open talks with Baghdad on a troop pullout. But the US special envoy for Syria and the coalition against the "Islamic State" (IS) terror group, James Jeffrey, said operations against the jihadis had been put on hold after the drone strike.
Sadr was, however, keen to keep his rally away from Tahrir Square, which has been the main focus of the long-running anti-government protests.
Some 470 people have been killed since the protests erupted in the capital and the Shiite-majority south in October.
The protests were initially fuelled by anger over graft and joblessness but then ballooned into demands for deep political reforms.
Oil-rich Iraq is OPEC's second-biggest crude producer, logging around 3.4 million barrels per day of exports.
But public services are failing, unemployment is high and one in five people live in poverty, according to the World Bank.

“Australia bushfires send CO2 levels soaring”
The fires in Australia are a major factor in one of the biggest rises in atmospheric CO2 in 60 years, experts have said. Meanwhile, a team is trying to recover the bodies of three US firefighters killed in a plane crash
The Met said levels of CO2 in the atmosphere were expected to surpass 417 parts per million in May, with the average for 2020 forecast to be 414.2 ± 0.6ppm. That expected average would exceed the 2019 average by 2.74 ± 0.57 ppm.
Similar concentrations of CO2 were last seen in the Earth's atmosphere between 3 million and 5 million years ago, scientists say. Back then, sea levels were 10 meters to 20 meters (33 feet to 65 feet) higher than today, with temperatures some 2 to 3 degrees Celsius (3.6 to 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer.
The rise in emissions of the greenhouse gas CO2 contributes to global warming, which is seen as a major factor driving the fires in Australia. Bushfires have burnt huge swathes of land in the country's southeast and killed at least 31 people since September.

Multitudinaria manifestación contra presencia militar estadounidense en Iraq
En Bagdad, la capital iraquí, millones de manifestantes de todos los componentes sociales, colmaron este viernes las calles para exigir la retirada de las fuerzas estadounidenses del país.
Los manifestantes acuden en masa a la plaza Tahrir, en el centro de Bagdad, alzando banderas iraquíes.
El corresponsal de Al-Mayadeen informó que varias personas, corrientes políticas y simpatizantes de las facciones de resistencia, así como clanes iraquíes, asistieron a la manifestación número un millón.
Señaló que los manifestantes acuden en grandes masas a la plaza Tahrir desde diversas regiones para participar en la manifestación millonaria, considerada la primera en cuanto a su masividad para denunciar la presencia extranjera en el país.
Según nuestro corresponsal, el mensaje que los iraquíes están enviando es que las facciones de la Resistencia tienen una gran base popular y presionarán para implementar la decisión del Parlamento de poner fin a la presencia de las tropas estadounidenses.
Indicó, además, que los manifestantes corearon consignas que condenan la presencia estadounidense, tales como: “salgan de nuestra tierra antes de que los saquemos".
Líder de la Corriente Sadrista: Estados Unidos será tratado como ocupante si se niega a salir de Iraq
"Estados Unidos será tratado como un país ocupante y enemigo si se niega a salir de Iraq", dijo el líder político y religioso iraquí Muqtada al-Sadr.
En su declaración, Al-Sadr afirmó: "Si las fuerzas estadounidenses no se van, entonces hay otras medidas, incluido el cierre de todas las bases estadounidenses en el territorio iraquí" y lo que más nos preocupa es la soberanía de Iraq, y esta se logra con la salida de todas las tropas extranjeras que se encuentran en nuestro territorio”.
En ese contexto, Al-Sadr dijo: "El presidente estadounidense Donald Trump no debe tratar a Iraq en sus decisiones y discursos con una actitud de superioridad, arrogancia y prepotencia, ya que de ese modo lo trataremos de la misma forma”.
“Si se implementan estas medidas, y salen de aquí trataremos a Estados Unidos sobre la base de que no es un ocupante, pero sí como un país enemigo".
El líder de la Corriente Sadrista enfatizó que el gobierno iraquí debe realizar tratados de no agresión con los países vecinos basados en el respeto mutuo de la soberanía y prohibir que cualquier parte, ya sea oficial o extra oficial, se comunique con gobiernos extranjeros, excepto a través de los canales oficiales del Estado y con aprobación previa.
La capital iraquí vive hoy al pulso de los millones que marchan en manifestaciones con la participación de todos los componentes iraquíes de varias gobernaciones, exigiendo la retirada de las fuerzas estadounidenses del país.
Netanyahu y Pence piden acción mundial rápida contra Irán
En su discurso en la Jerusalén ocupada, ante varios jefes de Estado que participaron en el foro mundial del "Holocausto", Netanyahu expresó: "(Israel) saluda al presidente Trump y al vicepresidente Pence por su respuesta a los tiranos de Teherán".
Por su parte, el presidente francés Emmanuel Macron consideró que no es posible utilizar el "Holocausto para justificar la división contemporánea o el odio".
Decenas de líderes mundiales llegaron el jueves a la Jerusalén ocupada para participar en el foro, incluidos Macron y el presidente ruso Vladimir Putin.

Cientos de integrantes de la caravana cruzaron de madrugada la frontera. Horas después, fueron interceptadas por las autoridades
Agentes de la Guardia Nacional mexicana han chocado la tarde de este jueves en contra de un grupo de migrantes de la más reciente caravana, que marchaba hacia el municipio de Tapachula, en el sureño Estado de Chiapas. El grupo, de varios cientos de personas, había burlado a las autoridades mexicanas para cruzar la frontera esta madrugada.
Las autoridades mexicanas desactivaron al grupo de El Ceibo entre el sábado y el domingo. La gran mayoría de los migrantes pasaron por la garita fronteriza. Según el Gobierno, una parte del grupo accedió a regresar de manera "voluntaria y asistida" a Honduras. Otra pidió asilo y otra espera acceder a un puesto de trabajo en el sur de México. Algunos decidieron pasar a México por la montaña, pero las camionetas del Instituto Nacional de Migración, INAMI, recorrieron incansablemente la carretera para detenerlos.
En Tecún Umán la situación fue distinta. Una parte del grupo accedió a pasar por la garita fronteriza y aceptar alguna de las opciones que ofrecía el Gobierno mexicano. Pero otro grupo, de más de 1.000 personas, decidió esperar. Querían cruzar México y llegar a Estados Unidos.
En referencia a lo ocurrido estos días y lo que podrá pasar en el futuro con la migración en la región, Giovanni Lepri, representante adjunto de ACNUR en México, explica Es fundamental que México mantenga una política migratoria sensible a este asunto. Al final son personas que huyen de violencia".

Alberto Fernández hizo un llamado a la paz entre Israel y Palestina
Alberto Fernández participó del Foro Internacional que conmemoró el día del Holocausto colocando una ofrenda floral al pie del monumento que recuerda a las víctimas del genocidio nazi. Fue uno de los últimos tramos de la larga ceremonia, que combinó discursos, con videos históricos y números musicales, en donde cada presidente que intervino buscó darle una dirección política determinada. El primer ministro israelí Benjamin Netanyahu y el vicepresidente norteamericano Mike Pence centraron sus críticas más duras en Irán. El presidente francés Emmanuel Macron subrayó la necesidad de una Europa unida, con lo que mandó una indirecta a Inglaterra. En tanto, el presidente de Alemania, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, en el que para todos fue el mejor discurso, alertó sobre el resurgimiento de los partidos de ultraderecha y del racismo. En lo que coincidieron fue en afirmar el "nunca más" a las locuras asesinas del Reich. Hoy, Fernández concluirá su visita con un encuentro con una reunión bilateral con Netanyahu. Antes de la reunión, el Presidente escribió unos tuits en los que habló de Israel y el Holocausto para luego hacer una referencia a la situación Palestina: "Dejo esta hermosa tierra con un sueño: verla en paz con sus vecinos y especialmente con el pueblo palestino. Un año de la ficción de gobierno de Juan Guaidó
Desde Caracas. Juan Guaidó cumplió un año de su autoproclamación como presidente encargado de Venezuela. Aquel 23 de enero del 2019 levantó la mano y juró desde una plaza alejada del Palacio de Miraflores, en una zona adinerada de Caracas. No fue una fecha casual: el 23 de enero de 1958 es el día en fue derrocada la dictadura de Marcos Pérez Giménez.
Su autoproclamación quedará como el punto de inicio de una de las operaciones más importantes montadas por el gobierno norteamericanos en América Latina. Se trató, y aún se trata, de crear una realidad ficcional, un gobierno paralelo que nunca existió y, sin embargo, ha sido, y es, real.
Ocurrió a una velocidad que debía ser imparable: el reconocimiento de Guaidó por parte del presidente de Estados Unidos (EEUU), la construcción de una diplomacia de asfixia con el Grupo de Lima y la Unión Europea, la presión a gran escala para lograr el quiebre de la Fuerza Armada Nacional Bolivariana (FANB) crucial en la estrategia golpista. Cientos de migrantes centroamericanos que buscan llegar a Estados Unidos ingresaron a México desde Guatemala este jueves aprovechando la ausencia de fuerzas de seguridad en la frontera.

Trump lanzará plan de paz para Oriente Próximo

Frenan avance de 2 mil migrantes que cruzaron el Suchiate
Frontera Hidalgo, Chis., Agentes de la Guardia Nacional (GN) y del Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) frenaron ayer, entre jaloneos y gases lacrimógenos, el avance de unos 2 mil centroamericanos que habían ingresado sin documentos por la mañana a México por el río Suchiate.
La mayoría de los migrantes fueron detenidos o se entregaron voluntariamente; otros huyeron hacia el monte para evitar ser arrestados, con lo que quedó disuelto el grupo, que pretendía llegar a Tapachula y luego a la frontera con Estados Unidos.
Partidarios de Evo Morales aceptan a su candidato para evitar división
La Paz. Sectores campesinos e indígenas, leales al presidente derrocado Evo Morales aceptaron este jueves al candidato propuesto por el ex gobernante, el economista Luis Arce, y desistieron de insistir en postular al ex canciller, el aymara David Choquehuanca, para evitar una división, informó un dirigente.
"En aras de la unidad (...) hemos consensuado de manera orgánica con todos los movimientos sociales que se respete a la candidatura a la presidencia con el hermano Luis Arce Catacora", dijo el dirigente campesino Hilarión Mamani, citado por la radio privada Erbol en Internet.
Proponen consulta sobre cervecera en Mexicali
La Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat) señaló que no ha tomado una determinación sobre la instalación de la planta cervecera de la empresa Constellation Brands en Mexicali. No se puede aprobar o desaprobar sólo a partir del dato del agua que se utilizará, ya que hay otras variables que se deben tomar en cuenta como el tema social, legal, el derecho humano al agua y la dimensión ética, señaló Víctor Toledo, titular de la dependencia.
Sostuvo que lo ideal sería que se realizara una consulta pública con la población para ésta decida si se establece la planta o no. Es un tema controvertido y están en juego muchos intereses, indicó. La producción de cerveza será para comercializarse en Estados Unidos, y la planta tiene un avance de 60 por ciento en su construcción.
