Trump Signs Hong Kong Democracy Legislation, Angering China

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Trump on Wednesday signed tough legislation that authorizes sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials responsible for human rights abuses in Hong Kong, signaling support for pro-democracy activists and escalating tensions with Beijing as Mr. Trump tries to negotiate a trade deal with Chinese leaders.

China’s Foreign Ministry was furious, saying the bill “seriously interfered with Hong Kong affairs, seriously interfered with China’s internal affairs, and seriously violated international law and basic norms of international relations.” The ministry warned the United States against acting arbitrarily and said that any consequences would “be borne by the United States.”

Mr. Trump’s decision, publicly announced the evening before Thanksgiving and after markets had closed, throws a potential wrench into the United States’ bilateral trade talks with China. Both countries have tried to keep the Hong Kong issue separate from their negotiations, which have been moving slowly.

Time Is Running Out for Trump’s North Korean Diplomacy, Analysts Say

SEOUL, South Korea — The clock is ticking. Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s leader, has said that the United States has until the end of the year to make a new proposal to create a breakthrough in stalled negotiations on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The looming deadline — which North Korea has issued repeated warnings about — carries the implicit threat that the country could return to its alarming behavior of the past by ending its self-imposed moratorium on nuclear tests and launching long-range missiles capable of hitting American cities. On Thursday, it launched two short-range rockets, its 13th rocket or missile test since May.

In the past month, North Korea has warned that the Trump administration should not even “dream of” discussing denuclearization without first ending its “hostile” policies, including smothering economic sanctions. It swore “shocking punishment” if Washington were to ignore the year-end deadline.

China Condemns U.S. Over Hong Kong. That Won’t Stop Trade Talks.

SHANGHAI — China vented on Thursday after President Trump signed new human rights legislation covering the protest-wracked city of Hong Kong. It denounced the new law as illegal interference in its own affairs. It summoned the American ambassador for the second time in a week. It vowed retaliation.

Behind the harsh rhetoric, China has few options for striking back at the United States in a meaningful way. And it has bigger priorities — namely, ending the increasingly punishing trade war between the two countries. Though both sides are talking about their willingness to reach a deal, they have yet to sign even an interim pact that would head off potentially damaging new tariffs less than three weeks from now.

On Thursday, Beijing’s main agency on trade remained quiet on the legislation even as other officials railed against it, suggesting that the government remained open to a trade deal and would let the volatile issue of Hong Kong simmer, at least for now.

'Full of arrogance': Trump angers China by signing bills backing Hong Kong protesters

The legislation, approved unanimously by the US Senate and by all but one lawmaker in the House of Representatives last week, threatens sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials deemed responsible for human rights abuses in Hong Kong. The bill also requires the state department to annually review whether Hong Kong retains enough autonomy to justify favourable US trading terms.

“This is a pure interference in China’s internal affairs,” China’s ministry of foreign affairs said on Thursday, hours after the bill was signed by Trump. “This bill, which has been denounced by all Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots, is full of prejudice and arrogance. It treats Hong Kong with intimidation and threats,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Such an act will make Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots, understand the sinister intentions and hegemonic nature of the US,” the ministry added in comments repeated across Chinese state media. “The US plot is doomed to fail.”

Trump plan to label Mexico cartels as terror groups defies logic, experts say

Donald Trump’s decision to designate the cartels as foreign terrorist organisations (FTOs) has been questioned by experts, who argue that the move’s main impact would be cosmetic – although it might provide a pretext for possible US military incursions.

U.S. aims to exclude Hezbollah from new Lebanese gov't: Russian envoy

BEIRUT, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Russian Ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Zasypkin accused on Thursday the United States of pushing for a technocrat government in Lebanon in order to exclude Hezbollah from the new cabinet.

"While the technocrat government is interesting, it is not realistic to have a cabinet that does not get political support. Hence, it is better to have a political cabinet with some technocrat figures," Zasypkin was quoted as saying by Elnashra, an online independent newspaper. The ambassador highlighted the need for a serious government that can work effectively and in harmony.

Lebanon has been witnessing nationwide protests for over 40 days which led to the resignation of Prime Minister Saad Hariri's government. Protesters are calling for a neutral government capable of implementing necessary economic reforms while supporters of political parties, namely Hezbollah and Amal Movement, insist on a political government which can include technocrat figures.

Brazil's court affirms ex-president Lula guilty in 2nd corruption case

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- A Brazilian court of appeals affirmed on Wednesday a guilty sentence for ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a second corruption case. Lula is accused of taking bribes to renovate a country home in Atibaia, Sao Paulo state, which he has always denied, saying that the house has never belonged to him, but to a friend who let him use it freely.

Lula's defense said there is no evidence linking the renovation to Lula. All three judges of the court affirmed the sentence unanimously. The appeals court also raised the sentence from 12 years and 11 months to 17 years and one month, for money laundering and corruption.

Lula was found guilty in a previous accusation of corruption, which was later affirmed by the appeals court. He was arrested and started serving a sentence of eight years and 10 months since April 2018. However, Lula was released earlier this month following a ruling of the Brazil's Supreme Federal Court, which determined that defendants in Brazil will only be arrested after the last appeal of their processes.

China launches new Earth observation satellite

TAIYUAN, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China sent a new Earth observation satellite into space from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern China's Shanxi Province at 7:52 a.m. Thursday (Beijing Time). The satellite, Gaofen-12, was launched aboard a Long March-4C rocket and entered the planned orbit successfully. It was the 320th flight mission of the Long March carrier rocket series.

As part of the country's high-definition earth observation project, the microwave remote sensing satellite is capable of providing photographs with a resolution of better than a meter. Gaofen-12 will be used in land surveys, urban planning, road network design and crop yield estimate, as well as disaster relief. It can also serve projects along the Belt and Road.

Israeli researchers develop technology to summarize multilingual texts

JERUSALEM, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Israeli researchers have developed new technology to summarize multilingual texts automatically, Ben-Gurion University in southern Israel reported Wednesday. The method, called MUSE (multilingual sentence extractor), has been tested in nine languages, including Chinese, English, Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, Russian, German, French and Spanish.

The summaries made by the new technology have shown much resemblance to those written by humans. Most of the automated methods available today are language-dependent and the underlying algorithms need to undergo early training on large amounts of text. The new method provides abstracts of texts in different languages, based on an algorithm that scales the sentences in a document, using statistical characteristics of the sentences.

China furious after Trump signs Hong Kong legislation

Beijing dubs US bills backing Hong Kong protesters 'severe interference' in its affairs and warns of 'countermeasures'.

Beijing has reacted with fury to US President Donald Trump's decision to sign into law congressional legislation backing protesters in Hong Kong, summoning the United States ambassador and warning of "countermeasures" over what it branded a "severe interference" in China's affairs.

The legislation, approved unanimously by the Senate - the US's upper house - and by all but one member of the House of Representatives - the lower house - last week, requires Hong Kong's special trade status with the US to be reviewed annually by the State Department, and also threatens sanctions for human rights violations.

Analysts say any move to end Hong Kong's special treatment could prove self-defeating to the US, which has benefitted from the business-friendly conditions in the territory. If Hong Kong becomes just another Chinese port, companies that rely on the territory's role as a middleman or for trans-shipping would take their business elsewhere.

That said, the bills contain strong waivers that would allow the president to block their provisions on grounds of national security or national interest.

Iran: Eight with CIA links arrested for inciting deadly protests

Supreme Leader Khamenei praises Iranian people for crushing 'very dangerous conspiracy' by foreign powers.

Iranian security agents arrested at least eight people linked to the CIA during last week's deadly unrest over petrol price increases, the official news agency IRNA reported on Wednesday.

The violence comes as Iran's economy has been hit by a tightening US blockade that cut off its oil exports this year, and as mass demonstrations also erupted in Iraq and Lebanon against governments built around prominent pro-Iran factions.

Washington's policy of imposing "maximum pressure" has hammered Iran's oil-reliant economy, which has been struggling to deal with rising inflation, growing unemployment, a slumping rial currency, and state corruption.

Iraq security forces kill protesters in Nasiriya, army deploys

Nearly 100 wounded as forces use live fire to disperse protesters in Nasiriya day after Iran's consulate was torched.

by Arwa Ibrahim

At least 14 people have been killed after security forces used live ammunition and tear gas canisters to disperse anti-government protesters in the southern city of Nasiriya, medical sources and witnesses told Al Jazeera.

Authorities in the capital Baghdad dispatched troops to southern Iraq, which has seen massive protests for weeks, to "restore order" there, the military said in a statement on Thursday.

"We will stay in the streets until our demands our met, no matter what level of force is used against us."

The events in Nasiriya come a day after anti-government protesters stormed and set fire to the Iranian consulate in the southern holy city of Najaf, in the strongest expression of anti-Iranian sentiment by Iraqi protesters, who have taken to the streets in Baghdad and Iraq's mainly Shia south since early October.

The Iraqi authorities responded by condemning the attack and imposing a curfew in Najaf, while Iran demanded that Iraq take decisive action against "aggressors" behind the arson attack.
