China Says U.S. Will, and Must, Cut Tariffs to Reach a Trade Deal

SHANGHAI — The Chinese government on Thursday said Beijing and the Trump administration had agreed to get rid of some tariffs as the two sides work toward ending their 19-month trade war.

But Beijing also hardened its stance in insisting that no deal could take place without each side canceling at least some tariffs. Gao Feng, a spokesman for China’s Commerce Ministry, said at his weekly news conference in Beijing that the United States had agreed that any deal would have to include tariff reductions by both sides.

Trump’s Twitter War Room Aims Its Punches at Decorated Colonel

Days after a decorated Army lieutenant colonel offered damaging testimony about President Trump’s conduct on a July phone call with Ukraine’s leader, Mr. Trump stood on the South Lawn and issued a vague but ominous warning.

“You’ll be seeing very soon what comes out,” Mr. Trump said on Saturday, referring to the officer, Lt. Col. Alexander S. Vindman.

Mr. Trump was not more specific. But an attack on Colonel Vindman’s character and motives was already making its way from the dark corners of Mr. Trump’s social media following to the front lines of the impeachment battle.

Saudi Arabia recruited Twitter employees charged with spying: US

Two Saudi citizens, one American, accused of working together to unmask ownership of dissident Twitter accounts.

Saudi Arabia's government, frustrated by growing criticism of its leaders and policies on social media, recruited two Twitter employees to gather confidential personal information on thousands of accounts that included prominent opponents, prosecutors alleged on Wednesday.

Two Saudi citizens and one US citizen allegedly worked together to unmask the ownership details behind dissident Twitter accounts on behalf of the government in Riyadh and the royal family, the US justice department said.

The crown prince's former top adviser, Saud al-Qahtani, who also served as director of the cybersecurity federation, started the "Black List" hashtag to target critics of the government. He ominously tweeted in 2017 that the government had ways of unmasking anonymous Twitter users.

EU, US criticise Iran over UN nuclear inspector incident

Iran blocked a UN inspector from visiting Natanz facility last week on suspicion of carrying 'suspicious materials'.

Iran said it blocked the IAEA inspector from visiting the plant last week after she triggered an alarm at the gate to the Natanz facility.

The state-run IRNA news agency, citing Iran's atomic agency, said the woman was stopped "due to concerns over carrying suspicious materials".

Iran is also expected to address its decision to block the inspector at Thursday's IAEA meeting in Vienna.

The incident comes as Tehran scaled back compliance with the nuclear accord, following the US's decision last year to abandon the agreement and reimpose punishing sanctions against Iran.

China sentences fentanyl smuggler in joint US investigation

Court in northern Hebei province described the case as the first successful joint inquiry tied to fentanyl smuggling.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that US authorities blame for more than 100 deaths a day in the US.

The court in northern Hebei province described the case as the first successful joint investigation related to fentanyl smuggling.

China's narcotics bureau discovered in 2017 a criminal ring based in Shanghai and eastern Jiangsu province and seized 11.9 kilogrammes (26.2 pounds) of fentanyl, acting on a tip-off from US border authorities, according to the court.

The sentencing comes amid ongoing negotiations over a potential US-China deal after more than a year of trade conflict between the two countries, of which fentanyl has been a sticking point.

Chile's Pinera fends off police abuse claims amid fresh clashes

As concern over torture claims grow, president vows action against security forces found guilty of rights abuses.

Manuel Guerra, prosecutor for Santiago East, announced on Wednesday that he would seek court approval to investigate 14 police officers for allegedly torturing protesters. He said his investigation was related to two separate incidents during a nine-day state of emergency in the capital from October 18.

More than 1,659 protesters and 800 police officers have been wounded in the almost three weeks of protests, according to authorities and rights groups, making the violence Chile's worst unrest since the end of Augusto Pinochet's 1973-1990 dictatorship. More than 7,000 people have been detained.

Chile's independent National Human Rights Institute says it has brought legal action over 181 cases, including alleged murders, sexual violence and torture by the military police.

Hundreds of people on Wednesday marched towards the Costanera Center, a mirror-glass 1,000-foot (300-meter) tower at the heart of so-called Sanhattan, Santiago's business district.
