With a New Threat, Iran Tests the Resolve of the U.S. and Its Allies

WASHINGTON — After coming to office vowing to solve two very different nuclear crises, President Trump finds himself in a bind familiar to his predecessors: careening toward a confrontation with Iran and stalemated with North Korea.

Iran’s announcement on Monday that it expects within 10 days to blow past the limits on how much nuclear fuel it can stockpile opens a new and perilous phase of its confrontation with the West.

As U.S. and Iran Face Off, Europe Is Stuck in the Middle

BRUSSELS — As tensions between Washington and Tehran escalate, European leaders find themselves in an uncomfortable place they have feared ever since President Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal 13 months ago and restored punishing sanctions against Tehran.

While the Europeans want to preserve the deal — which they see as important for their own security and for the stability of the Middle East — they are basically powerless in the face of American military and financial clout.

Guatemala’s Presidential Election May Be a Blow to Anti-Corruption Effort

Guatemala’s presidential election on Sunday produced no clear winner, and will head to a runoff in August between a former first lady of the country and a former prisons director.

Whoever wins, the results could spell the end for Guatemala’s dozen-year experiment in combating corruption and establishing rule of law — a United Nations-backed panel of international prosecutors.

Scientists shocked by Arctic permafrost thawing 70 years sooner than predicted

Permafrost at outposts in the Canadian Arctic is thawing 70 years earlier than predicted, an expedition has discovered, in the latest sign that the global climate crisis is accelerating even faster than scientists had feared.

A team from the University of Alaska Fairbanks said they were astounded by how quickly a succession of unusually hot summers had destabilised the upper layers of giant subterranean ice blocks that had been frozen solid for millennia.

“What we saw was amazing,” Vladimir Romanovsky, a professor of geophysics at the university, told Reuters. “It’s an indication that the climate is now warmer than at any time in the last 5,000 or more years.“

Russia, China warn US over sending 1,000 new troops to the Gulf

Deployment of 1,000 troops to Middle East shows US on 'a conscious course to provoke war' with Iran, Moscow says.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Washington it should drop the plan to boost its troops in the Middle East or risk war with Iran.

On Monday, acting US defence chief Patrick Shanahan announced the deployment of about 1,000 more troops to the Gulf for what he said were "defensive purposes to address air, naval, and ground-based threats in the Middle East".

David Desroches, former director of NATO operations at the Pentagon, called the deployment a "small measure". He told Al Jazeera: "It's designed to send a message, but this is nowhere near what you'd need for an invasion or a war."

Facebook set to launch Libra cryptocurrency

The Bitcoin rival is already backed by dozens of companies including Uber, PayPal and Mastercard.

The digital coin will come online in the first half of 2020 if regulators in Switzerland, where the new currency is to be based, give the go-ahead.

Facebook has created a management tool it has named Calibra, which will offer digital wallets to save, send and spend Libras. It will be connected to the billion-plus users of the Messenger and WhatsApp platforms as the network expands beyond social networking into the world of international finance.

The 28 partner companies in the project include household names such as Mastercard, Visa, Spotify, PayPal, eBay, Uber and Vodafone, as well as venture capital firms.

In recent years, cryptocurrency investors have lost hundreds of millions of dollars through hacks, and the market has been plagued by accusations of money-laundering, illegal drug sales and terrorist financing.
