Europe Vows to Spend More on Defense, but U.S. Still Isn’t Happy

BRUSSELS — The United States and its European allies on Thursday commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day, which freed the Continent from tyranny. But at the same time, the two sides are squabbling bitterly over the future and funding of European defense.

Washington has been pressing the European Union to spend more and do more for its own defense for well over a decade, with President Trump just the latest and loudest to do so.

Now that the European Union is actually responding, with a defense fund and a project for military cooperation and development, the United States is criticizing how it’s being done and complaining that the moves could harm trans-Atlantic cooperation and prevent American companies from competing for potentially lucrative contracts.

Trump Says No Deal With Mexico Is Reached as Border Arrests Surge

WASHINGTON — The United States on Wednesday barreled closer to imposing tariffs on all Mexican imports as high-stakes negotiations at the White House failed to immediately resolve President Trump’s demand that Mexico prevent a surge of Central American migrants from flowing across the southwestern border.

Mr. Trump declared Wednesday evening on Twitter that “not nearly enough” progress had been made and warned that “if no agreement is reached, Tariffs at the 5% level will begin on Monday, with monthly increases as per schedule.”

'Surveillance capitalism': critic urges Toronto to abandon smart city project

The 12-acre Quayside project, a partnership between Google’s Sidewalk Labs and the city of Toronto, has come under increasing scrutiny amid concerns over privacy and data harvesting.

This week, the US venture capitalist Roger McNamee warned that technology companies such as Google cannot be trusted to safely manage the data they collect on residents.

“The smart city project on the Toronto waterfront is the most highly evolved version to date of … surveillance capitalism”, he wrote to the city council, suggesting Google will use “algorithms to nudge human behavior” in ways to “favor its business”.

Saudi Arabia buying new missile technology from China: Report

Former US official calls media report 'significant and alarming' as concerns grow over new arms race in Middle East.

Saudi Arabia has significantly escalated its ballistic missile programme by buying technology from China, according to a US media report.

The news comes amid strained relations between Congress and the White House over relations with Saudi Arabia.

Satellite imagery, originally published by the Washington Post in January, appeared to show a ballistic missile factory in Al Dawadmi, west of the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Analysts at the time said what was shown in the images appeared to match Chinese technology.

China concern after Taiwan confirms US arms purchase request

Beijing urges Washington to stop arms sales to the island after Taipei confirms request for tanks, air defense systems.

In a statement, the ministry said it had submitted a letter of request for 108 M1A2 Abrams tanks, 1,240 TOW anti-armour missiles, 409 Javelin anti-tank missiles and 250 Stinger man-portable air defence systems.

Reports have also said Taiwan was seeking 66 additional F-16 fighter jets in the most advanced "V'' configuration.

The M1 Abrams would mark a significant upgrade from the ageing tanks currently used by Taiwan's army now uses, while the TOW and Javelin systems would upgrade the island's ability to repulse an attempt by China to land tanks and troops from across the 160km-wide Taiwan Strait.

The Stingers meanwhile could help strengthen Taiwan's defences against China, which has more than 1,000 advanced fighter aircraft and 1,500 accurate missiles pointing at the island.
