Dozens of Afghan Forces and Taliban Killed as Violence Spikes Ahead of Talks

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — Dozens of Afghan forces and Taliban fighters were killed in overnight fighting across Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday, as violence intensified ahead of another round of peace efforts to end the 18-year-old war.

The worst of the attacks were in Kandahar Province, where the Taliban targeted an Afghan border post late Monday, killing at least four service members, according to local officials. Kasim Azad, the secretary of Kandahar’s police chief, confirmed the attack and said four members of the border forces were killed.

It’s Netanyahu’s Israel Now

JERUSALEM — Benjamin Netanyahu’s apparent re-election as prime minister of Israel attests to a starkly conservative vision of the Jewish state and its people about where they are and where they are headed.

They prize stability, as well as the military and economic security that Mr. Netanyahu has delivered.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards: The Supreme Leader’s Military-Industrial Complex

President Trump’s declaration that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a foreign terrorist organization is the first time the United States government has designated a part of another country’s military as that type of threat. In doing so, Mr. Trump took broad aim at a pillar of the Iranian state, which exerts enormous influence in politics and the economy as well as in Iran’s internal and external military policies.

Pompeo Refuses to Say What U.S. Would Do if Israel Annexes West Bank

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused to tell Congress on Tuesday what the United States would do if the Israeli government tried to annex the West Bank, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently promised to do if re-elected.

Mr. Pompeo’s silence on the issue is a break from the actions of previous administrations. Senior American officials have long and explicitly discouraged any formal attempt by Israel to extend sovereignty over some or all of the disputed territory of the West Bank and its population of 2.6 million Palestinians.

UK risks losing European commissioner role over Brexit delay

France is expected to demand the removal of the post of British European commissioner as a price for a long Brexit delay, leaving Britain without a seat at the top table of Brussels decision-making for the first time since 1973.

Senior EU sources say the French president, Emmanuel Macron, is likely to seek to entrench the UK’s reduced status in the EU at the leaders’ Brexit summit on Wednesday evening.

Amnesty International reports global drop in executions

Amnesty International's annual death penalty report finds that executions have decreased worldwide. The trend is overshadowed by a new law in Brunei that allows authorities to kill people for homosexual activities.

Amnesty International (AI) has published its annual report on global executions. "The main finding of our report is that the number of global executions has been falling — has gone down to reach the lowest figures we have reported in at least a decade," said Chiara Sangiorgio, an advocate against the death penalty with AI. The organization notes that significantly fewer executions were carried out in countries such as Iran, Pakistan and Iraq in the past year than in previous years.

The incremental improvement, however, is overshadowed by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's recent declaration that people said to have engaged in homosexual or adulterous activities in Brunei would be put to death.

Israel elections: Netanyahu likely winner in tight race

With most votes counted, Netanyahu's Likud party seems better placed to form coalition government after a close contest.

With 97 percent of the votes counted, both Netanyahu's Likud and Gantz's centrist Blue and White Party won 35 seats apiece, according to the Knesset website and the Israeli TV channels. It would be a five-seat gain for Likud over the previous election in 2015.

Netanyahu was clearly in a strong position to form a coalition government with other right-wing factions that have backed him.

Early projections also showed turnout among Palestinian Israelis was especially low. An hour before voting closed, Arab turnout was at 46 percent, well below the 61 percent turnout nationwide. Overall Arab turnout in the 2015 election was 63 percent.

As Moon heads to Washington, Kim turns to old friend Moscow

South Korean president to hold talks with Trump while North Korea looks for support in the region.

The Trump-Moon meeting in Washington comes a few hours after Pyongyang hosts its 14th Supreme People's Assembly, where many expect North Korea's leadership to reveal its path with regards to its relations with the US.

Last month, Russia delivered 2,200 tonnes of wheat to North Korea through the World Food Program to help curtail what the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang called "unfriendly interpretation of sanctions by some countries.

Saudi Aramco's debut international bond tops $100bn

Record-breaking demand a market vote of confidence for oil giant but some investors are worried about gov't influence.

The demand appeared to be the largest ever for emerging markets bonds, fund managers said, surpassing order book value of more than $52bn for Qatar's $12bn deal last year, $67bn for Saudi Arabia's inaugural issue in 2016 and $69bn orders for Argentina's $16.5bn trade that year.

The Aramco bond has attracted interest from a wide range of investors, as the oil producer's vast profits would put its debt rating - if unconstrained by its sovereign links - in the same league as independent oil majors like Exxon Mobil and Shell.

Aramco has hired Lazard as a financial adviser for the bond deal. JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, HSBC, Citi, Goldman Sachs and National Commercial Bank have been chosen to arrange the bond issue.

Japanese military confirms F-35 crash & discovery of wreckage

Japan’s military has found debris from a F-35A fighter jet that disappeared from radar with one pilot on board during a training mission over the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday evening.

A Japanese Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) spokesman has confirmed that debris from the F-35A plane, which lost radar contact with ground control at Misawa Air Base during a routine training mission off the coast of Aomori Prefecture on Tuesday, has been found.

It is the second F-35 crash in the fighter's history, and the first one outside the US. The plane was less than a year old and was delivered to the JASDF last year. It was flying with three others of the same make about 135km off the coast when it disappeared.

Austrian spies, cut off by European colleagues over ‘Russian ties’, missed info on NZ shooter

Citing the “Russian ties” of Austrian politicians in charge of intelligence, several European countries kept Austrian spies out of the intel-sharing loop. This led Vienna to miss a visit by the NZ mosque shooter.

Europe’s informal intelligence-sharing forum, Club de Berne, has withheld information from Austria’s BVT (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz und Terrorismusbekämpfung) for the better part of a year now, BVT Director Peter Gridling revealed during a court appearance on Monday. While the BVT initially withdrew from the information-sharing club following a February 2018 police raid on its offices, other members of Club de Berne continued to withhold information from Vienna even after relations were restored.

Putin talks Mueller probe, US-Russia relations & polar bears at Arctic forum

Describing Robert Mueller’s probe as “nonsense,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow will work with the US no matter who wins in 2020. He also brought up the plight of polar bears as US and Russia face off in the Arctic.

“A mountain that has brought forth a mouse,” is the metaphor Putin used at the Arctic Forum in St. Petersburg on Tuesday, to describe the two-year investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller that sought evidence of conspiracy or collusion between US President Donald Trump and Russia, but failed to find any.
