Pentagon Officials Fear Bolton’s Actions Increase Risk of Clash With Iran

WASHINGTON — Senior Pentagon officials are voicing deepening fears that President Trump’s hawkish national security adviser, John R. Bolton, could precipitate a conflict with Iran at a time when Mr. Trump is losing leverage in the Middle East by pulling out American troops.

At Mr. Bolton’s direction, the National Security Council asked the Pentagon last year to provide the White House with military options to strike Iran, Defense Department and senior American officials said on Sunday.

The request, which alarmed then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and other Pentagon officials, came after Iranian-backed militants fired three mortars or rockets into an empty lot on the grounds of the United States Embassy in Baghdad in September.

In response to Mr. Bolton’s request, which The Wall Street Journal first reported, the Pentagon offered some general options, including a cross-border airstrike on an Iranian military facility that would have been mostly symbolic. But Mr. Mattis and other military leaders adamantly opposed retaliating, arguing that the attack was insignificant — a position that ultimately won out, these officials said.

Pompeo Presses Saudi Leader on War, Murder and Rights Abuses

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pressed Saudi Arabia’s crown prince on Monday on a range of thorny issues — including war, murder, diplomatic rifts and human rights abuses — that have weakened the American-Saudi alliance and increased tensions among Arab nations.

At the same time, Mr. Pompeo reaffirmed the two nations’ shared goal of opposing Iranian policies in the Middle East.

“I want to talk to you about a couple of places we’ve been,” Mr. Pompeo told Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, at the start of their morning meeting at the royal palace. “We think we learned a lot along the way that will be important going forward.”

Venezuela Opposition Leader Is Arrested After Proposing to Take Power

CARACAS, Venezuela — The president of Venezuela’s opposition-controlled National Assembly was briefly arrested on Sunday, two days after declaring that he was prepared to take over temporarily as the country’s leader in a renewed push to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.

The opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, was captured when a van he was traveling in was stopped on a highway on Sunday morning.

A video recorded by a driver on the highway appeared to show masked, heavily armed agents from the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service pulling Mr. Guaidó from his vehicle and pushing him into a white van before driving away.

Trump Threatens to ‘Devastate Turkey Economically’ if It Attacks Kurds

WASHINGTON — President Trump threatened Turkey on Sunday with harsh economic sanctions if it attacks Kurdish forces in Syria after American troops withdraw from the country in the coming months.

“Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds,” Mr. Trump said on Twitter, suggesting that there would be a 20-mile safe zone around the group after American forces leave. He added, “Likewise, do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey.”

Mr. Trump’s tweets marked the first public threat toward Turkey, a NATO ally, over the Kurds and seemed to offer a blanket of protection for the group, a band of American-backed militias that the Turkish government sees as terrorists.

Turkey will not be intimidated by Trump, says foreign minister

Trump said in tweets on Sunday that Turkey would face economic consequences if it attacked Kurdish fighters in Syria. Ankara views them as members of a Kurdish group outlawed in Turkey as terrorist organisation.

“We have said repeatedly we are not scared of and will not be intimidated by any threats,” said Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in televised remarks from Ankara on Monday, before rebuking the US president for using Twitter for sensitive diplomatic matters.

Pompeo: Saudi Arabia must hold Jamal Khashoggi's killers accountable

Speaking to reporters at the end of a trip to Riyadh, Pompeo said he had raised the Khashoggi case in his meetings with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as well as other human rights concerns and the fate of women’s rights activists who have been detained in the kingdom.

“We spoke about human rights issues here in Saudi Arabia, women activists,” he said. “We spoke about the accountability and the expectations that we have. The Saudis are friends and when friends have conversations you tell them what your expectations are.

Global economy fears grow as China and eurozone slump

In a sign of the world economy reaching a tipping point, official figures showed that Chinese exports dropped by 4.4% in December, in the largest fall since 2016, on the back of faltering demand in most of its key markets. Imports also slipped by 7.6% to reflect waning demand at home.

The unexpected downturn for the biggest global exporter of manufactured products came as eurozone industrial output also tumbled in November, with the largest drop in factory activity since February 2016.

Thailand: biggest democracy protests in years held as military junta delays elections

On Sunday, in one of the biggest pro-democracy protests in Thailand in over four years, hundreds of people took to the streets for the third time in a week to criticise the military government for appearing to renege on assurances the election would finally happen on 24 February.

US 'a highly unreliable' partner to Ankara: Turkish official

Inconsistent US policies and cacophony in Washington to blame for problems between NATO allies, Erdogan adviser says.

Umut Uras.- Erdogan said last week the US administration is "seriously mistaken" in cooperating with Syrian Kurdish fighters, while President Donald Trump threatened on Sunday to "economically devastate" Turkey if it carries out a military offensive against the militia.

"Trump is stuck between US public opinion that widely questions the US presence in Syria and the wider Middle East, and politicians from his party and allies such as Israel and Saudi Arabia who are against the withdrawal," he said, adding Trump has shifted positions over the withdrawal various times over the last few weeks.

Angry Zimbabweans riot after 150 percent fuel price rise imposed

Demonstrators block major roads, loot shops after President Mnangagwa's announcement sharply raising petrol prices.

Tendai Marima.- In the southern city of Bulawayo, commuter bus drivers and activists blocked thoroughfares with burning tyres, tree branches, and blocks of stone. Riot police tried to quell demonstrations in the western suburbs of Emakhandeni and Luveve, firing warning shots and tear gas, but the protesters remained defiant.

The government announced an increase from $1.34 for a litre of petrol to $3.31 with diesel surging to $3.11 per litre, igniting widespread discontent. Workers' trade unions have called for a three-day nationwide shutdown in protest. The action comes shortly after junior doctors ended a 40-day strike demanding salaries in US dollars and better working conditions.

Kenya's new security conundrum after ousting al-Shabab

For many Kenyans pushing al-Shabab back into Somalia has given way to unforeseen threats closer to home.

Zein Basravi.- The Kenyan army took over control of the porous border with Somalia from police. Since then, Kenyan soldiers have spearheaded a large-scale ongoing operation in the Boni National Reserve, pushing al-Shabab fighters back into Somalia, greatly reducing the group's capacity to recruit and operate inside Kenya.

One of the reasons the Kenyan military has been so successful is close cooperation with international allies such as the United States and Great Britain. Mohammed said advanced surveillance technology has given Kenyan ground forces the ability to monitor the movements and communications of armed groups, even identifying lone-wolf attackers.

Ground forces carry out military operations while local leaders conduct community outreach and engagement programmes to undercut al-Shabab propaganda in their communities.

‘Global strike capability’: US deploys B-2 strategic bombers to Pearl Harbor for ‘24/7 watch’

B-2 Spirit bombers are returning to Hawaii to project American power in the Indo-Pacific region. The deployment comes amid heightened tensions between the US and China, who square off in trade and over several contested waterways.

“Deploying to Hawaii enables us to showcase to a large American and international audience that the B-2 is on watch 24 hours a day, seven days-a-week, ready to protect our country and its allies,” Lt. Col. Joshua Dorr, 393rd Bomb Squadron director of operations said, announcing the deployment of three B-2 Spirit bombers and 200 airmen to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.

It is the second time the Spirit has been deployed to Pearl Harbor in support of the BTF mission. During the first rotation from August -September 2018, the bombers flew a number of missions and trained alongside F-22 tactical fighters. In the past, the stealth bombers practiced their maneuvers at the Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, and come in handy as a show of force against North Korea.

The return of strategic bombers to Hawaii coincided with the stationing of the Chinese DF-26 intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBM) in the “plateau and desert areas” of the northwestern part of the country. Capable of striking targets 4,000 miles away, the missile, known as the 'Guam killer,' makes Andersen Air Force Base a potential target of a Chinese attack.

‘Dirty cops’: Trump slams FBI agents who wanted to investigate him over alleged Russia ties

US President Donald Trump has said that FBI agents who wanted to investigate him over unproven collusion with Russia during the 2016 presidential election are just “dirty cops.”

Trump specifically referenced former FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page whose anti-Trump text messages, which were uncovered by the DOJ Inspector General, led to Strzok’s firing. He said that Strzok and Page were “known scoundrels.” Strzok had been leading the FBI’s investigation into Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia at the time when he was exchanging the anti-Trump text messages with Page.

Commander of US nuclear sub demoted for hiring 10 Filipina prostitutes as ‘accompaniment’

Capt. Travis Zettel was relieved of duty last August for “inappropriate personal conduct” after allegedly “ordering” ten girls to his hotel while his sub, the USS Bremerton, was ported in Subic Bay, Kitsap Sun reported, citing the details of the incident obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

After USS Bremerton returned to Naval Base Kitsap in Washington state in May to begin decommissioning, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service opened a probe into alleged misconduct. Confronted with the allegations the captain admitted paying for “female accompaniment.” Following the scandal, Zettel was relieved of his command and reassigned to another position within Submarine Squadron 19. Other sailors subject to the probe were not reprimanded.

Iranian cargo Boeing 707 crashes in residential area near Tehran (VIDEO)

An Iranian Boeing 707 cargo aircraft has crashed into residential areas after leaving the runway, killing 15 of the 16 people on board, the military has said. The plane had departed from Kyrgyzstan carrying cargo to Iran. The airplane departed from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, carrying cargo and 16 people, according to the semi-official Fars News Agency. The plane was set to land at Karaj’s Payam Airport but the pilot mistook it for the adjacent Fath airfield, which is not suited to servicing cargo aircraft.

A total of 15 of the 16 people on board the ill-fated jet died in the crash, the Iranian military said in a statement. “A Boeing 707 cargo plane carrying meat from Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan had an emergency landing at Fath Airport today... the flight engineer has been dispatched to the hospital,” it confirmed.
