'A smell of death:' Mexico's truck of corpses highlights drug war crisis

The truck itself was unremarkable – a white tractor unit pulling a refrigerated tailer emblazoned with a polar bear logo – but it came with a police escort.

Inside were scores of human bodies, wrapped in garbage bags, bound with duct tape and piled haphazardly on top of each other.

The macabre discovery came on the country’s national holiday, and seemed to offer a damning comment on the state of the nation: in the 12 years since Mexico launched its militarized war on drugs, more than 200,000 people have died and another 35,000 gone missing.

Shockingly, Guadalajara is not the first city whose morgue has been overwhelmed by the sheer number of dead – although it is by far the largest.

“There are 20 other states with the same problem,” said Octavio Cotero, who was fired as director of the Jalisco Forensic Science Institute (IJCF) after the trailer’s discovery.

But the incident offered a perfect symbol for a crisis which affords no dignity to its victims – and which provokes indifference from the population, and mere expedience from the authorities.

Border walls are life-threatening and 'waste of tax dollars', report says

It finds that the 654 miles of walls along the United States’ southern border do not fulfill their ostensible purpose of “securing the border” – in other words, making the country safer or reducing smuggling. Rather, border walls exacerbate flooding by acting like dams; destroy indigenous cultural sites and sensitive ecosystems; and have contributed to thousands of deaths by pushing migrants into more remote, dangerous areas.

Aquarius cannot disembark in Marseille, says French minister

France is not ready for now to let the Mediterranean rescue ship Aquarius dock and disembark dozens of migrants at the port of Marseille, the country’s finance minister has said.

“For the moment it’s no,” Bruno Le Maire said when asked on BFM TV if Paris was ready to respond positively to a request from charities for permission to dock with 58 people onboard in the southern French port.

Rising oil prices fuel fears of damage to global economy

Some market watchers have predicted prices between $90 and $100 by the year’s end after Opec last weekend rebuffed Donald Trump’s demands for the oil cartel to rein in prices by expanding production.

Trump tweeted last week that the “Opec monopoly must get prices down now”, but when the cartel met in Algiers on Sunday it focused on how a previously agreed increase would be divvied up, rather than a new boost.

Observers expect prices to keep rising, mainly due to concerns over the impact of US sanctions on Iranian oil exports from November.

Bolsonaro could drag Brazil back into dictatorship, cultural legends warn

With less than a fortnight until the 7 October vote, Bolsonaro, a pro-torture former army captain who recently called for his political opponents to be shot, leads polls with about 28% of the vote.

But in an online manifesto that reflects mounting anxiety over a possible Bolsonaro presidency, 150 prominent artists and thinkers denounced him as “a clear threat to our fundamental civilisational heritage”. Signatories include Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil, a trio of politically engaged composers who all spent time in European exile during Brazil’s 1964-1985 dictatorship.

One anti-Bolsonaro samba circulating on social media features the lyric: “[Under Bolsonaro] we’ll have bullets, revolvers and grenades on our plates instead of rice and beans. Not him! Not him! Not him. For the love of God, not him! … If this chap gets elected and sees this video, I’m off to Japan. Not him! Not him! Not him. For the love of God, not him!”

MeToo's hidden activists? Working class women

Last Tuesday, McDonald’s workers in 10 US cities walked off the job to protest pervasive sexual harassment. A week earlier, female janitors in California marched 100 miles from San Francisco to the state capitol in Sacramento to support anti-harassment legislation. The janitors’ union, SEIU, in partnership with the East LA Women’s Center, has been quietly training women in self-defense and promoting peer-to-peer anti-harassment workshops and an assault crisis hotline. And Monday’s mass walkout of protestors around the nation in support of Christine Blasey Ford, the California professor who has accused Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh of attempting to sexually assault her when they were high-school students, was another stunning step.

These efforts represent an element of the MeToo movement seen and heard too little – the protest and outcry of ordinary women, rather than that of celebrity MeToo advocates, which is often evinced at awards ceremonies or on Twitter.

Iran's Terms to Reopen Nuclear Talks? Trump Has to Back Down

President Hassan Rouhani of Iran, visiting the United States for the first time since President Trump exited the 2015 Iran nuclear accord, said Monday that the only way his country would consider new talks with Washington is for Mr. Trump to reverse himself and honor the agreement.

Speaking to a group of two dozen academics, former government officials and journalists, Mr. Rouhani argued that going back "six months ago is much easier than going back six years," when the first efforts to negotiate an agreement were broached.

While he declared that Mr. Trump's strategy of trying to crush the Iranian economy with sanctions would fail, he expressed no anger and portrayed his government as the one that was abiding by international agreements that the United States had tossed aside.

But when pressed on how long Iran planned to play a military role in Syria, Mr. Rouhani was unrelenting. "We will be in Syria until terrorism is completely eradicated," he said, and as long as Iran remained invited there by the Syrian government.

Russia Promises Advanced Missiles to Syria After Rift With Israel

President Vladimir V. Putin said Monday that Russia would supply the Syrian military with a sophisticated air defense system, a move that reflects Russia's increasing tensions with Israel and that could heighten the risks of the air war over Syria.

Israel, which has long opposed the weapons transfer, has carried out more than 200 strikes on Iranian-affiliated targets in Syria in the past two years as Russia, Syria's main patron, has mostly looked the other way.

But relations between Russia and Israel have frayed since a Russian military plane was shot down over Syria a week ago, killing 15 Russian service members. The plane was accidentally shot down by Syria in response to an Israeli airstrike.

After Russia initially blamed Israel, Mr. Putin appeared last week to accept the loss as an accident.

But on Monday, Russia's defense minister said the decision to send the sophisticated S-300 missiles to Syria was made in response to Israel's disregard for the safety of Russian military personnel. Israeli pilots, he said, had intentionally maneuvered near the Russian plane to shield themselves from attack by Syria, putting the Russian crew at risk.

Thousands Are Arrested in Ethiopia After Ethnic Violence

he Ethiopian government has arrested thousands of people around the capital, Addis Ababa, over the last week and sent many of them to military camps for "rehabilitation," the authorities said on Monday, as the government sought to respond to mounting criticism from Ethiopians who say it has done little as ethnic violence has flared.

Ethiopia, to a degree unusual in Africa, has long exercised a degree of surveillance and control over its citizens. But earlier this year it embarked on a whirlwind series of reforms, mainly guided by the country's new prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, 42, a former army officer.

Ethiopia has sought peace with its longtime adversary, Eritrea; it has freed prisoners; opened access to websites and television channels that it had blocked for political reasons; and it invited banned political organizations and their leaders to return from exile.

This has brought more breathing room for Ethiopians and represents a dramatic change in direction for Africa's second most populous nation — one that until recently had seemed to take China for its model. But amid these changes there have been growing episodes of ethnic violence around the country, and in the middle of this month that violence reached Addis Ababa and the surrounding area.

Jair Bolsonaro, Candidate in Brazil, Faces Women's Calls: #NotHim

Brazilian women may not have galvanized behind any one candidate in the coming presidential election, but a growing number have taken to social media to make clear whom they will not vote for: the far-right front-runner Jair Bolsonaro.

A social media campaign called #EleNão — or #NotHim — is the most recent example of how women in Brazil are mobilizing against a politician who has publicly called women ignorant, too ugly to rape, or undeserving of the same salary as men. In one speech, Bolsonaro, who is the father of four sons and one daughter, called having a female child a "moment of weakness."

"Not him because he's machista, not him because he's homophobic, not him because he's racist, not him because he's a throwback for our democracy," a popular Brazilian singer, Daniela Mercury, said in a videoposted to Instagram over the weekend. She urged Brazilians to attend nationwide protests repudiating Mr. Bolsonaro on Saturday.

Hundreds of thousands of people have signed up on Facebook for planned "Women Against Bolsonaro" marches, and 2.9 million have joined the "Women United Against Bolsonaro" Facebook group, which turned private after it was repeatedly hacked.

What We're Watching at the U.N. General Assembly

Diplomats at the United Nations have by now learned to expect the unexpected from President Trump, who threatened to annihilate North Korea and "crush loser terrorists" during his debut speech at the General Assembly a year ago.

But at this year's convergence of world leaders in New York, which begins in earnest on Tuesday, Mr. Trump will command an additional stage. Aside from his speech, he will lead a meeting of the 15-member Security Council, the most powerful body of the United Nations.

There are plenty of pressing issues for world leaders to discuss — wars in Yemen and Syria that have killed hundreds of thousands of people; negotiations over North Korea's nuclear program; and the fate of the Iran nuclear accord, which Mr. Trump repudiated but European leaders want to preserve.

Underlying Mr. Trump's appearance is an increased sense that the United States, which helped found the United Nations after World War II, is isolating itself. His administration has moved to cut the United Nations budget and renounced participation in some of the organization's most prominent agreements and agencies.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/24/world/americas/un-general-assembly.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fworld

Iran threatens Saudi Arabia after Iran parade attack

Tehran has blamed Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the US for acting from the shadows in the terror attack on a military parade in Ahvaz. Will Iran retaliate with military action as threatened — or is it just posturing?

Iran's relations with its Gulf neighbors such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), along with the United States, are tense after a terrorist attack on a military parade in the Iranian city of Ahvaz on Sunday left at least 25 people dead.  Both the "Islamic State" (IS) and Arab separatists groups in Iran have claimed responsibility for the attack.
