Indian troops brawl with Chinese counterparts on border
According to reports, Indian and Chinese troops came to physical blows on Wednesday along the high-altitude border in north Sikkim, a small Indian state, situated between India and Bhutan, which has been a flashpoint of India-China conflict for decades.
Indian officials claimed that Chinese troops had attempted to cross over into territory claimed by India in the area of Naku La in Sikkim, which led to a skirmish which injured soldiers from both sides. It is understood that no shots were fired.
Greece and Turkey in talks to try to avert military escalation
The prospect of high-level contacts being resumed has been met with international relief following protracted tensions that had pushed the historical rivals to the brink of war over offshore energy exploitation rights.
Before senior diplomats flew to Istanbul, the Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, voiced hope that headway could be made to resolve what Athens regards as the neighbours’ biggest difference: delimitation of contested maritime borders.
Covid-19 has cost global workers $3.7tn in lost earnings, says ILO
In its annual analysis of the global jobs market, it said 8.8% of working hours were lost in 2020 relative to the end of 2019, equivalent to 255m full-time jobs. This is approximately four times bigger than the damage suffered by workers as a consequence of the 2008-9 financial crisis.
These “massive losses” resulted in an 8.3% decline in global labour income, before government support measures are included, according to the ILO, equivalent to $3.7tn in earnings – about 4.4% of global GDP.
Women have been more affected than men by the disruption to the jobs market, with female workers more likely to drop out of work altogether and stop looking for a new job. Younger workers have also been particularly hard hit, either losing jobs, dropping out of the labour force or delaying the search for a first job.

Global ice loss accelerating at record rate, study finds
The rate of loss is now in line with the worst-case scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s leading authority on the climate, according to a paper published on Monday in the journal The Cryosphere.
Thomas Slater, lead author and research fellow at the centre for polar observation and modelling at the University of Leeds, warned that the consequences would be felt around the world. “Sea level rise on this scale will have very serious impacts on coastal communities this century,” he said.
About 28tn tonnes of ice was lost between 1994 and 2017, which the authors of the paper calculate would be enough to put an ice sheet 100 metres thick across the UK. About two thirds of the ice loss was caused by the warming of the atmosphere, with about a third caused by the warming of the seas.

The United Arab Emirates cabinet has approved the establishment of an embassy in Tel Aviv in Israel, state media said, as Israel announced the opening of its embassy in Abu Dhabi.
The UAE controversially agreed to normalise relations with Israel in August, enraging Palestinians who fear the move will weaken a long-standing pan-Arab position calling for Israeli withdrawal from territories it occupies illegally and acceptance of Palestinian statehood in return for normal ties with the Arab countries.

Russia accuses US of meddling, but says open to dialogue
Russia has accused the United States of interfering in its domestic affairs following a crackdown on protesters supporting opposition leader Alexey Navalny, but a spokesman for Vladimir Putin said the Russian president would be open to talking to US President Joe Biden.
On Saturday, the US strongly condemned “the use of harsh tactics against protesters and journalists this weekend in cities throughout Russia” and called for the release of those who had been arrested.

Heavy rains and flooding have forced thousands to flee their homes in Mozambique after Tropical Cyclone Eloise brought wind gusts of up to 150 kilometres per hour (kph).
Eloise struck Mozambique’s Sofala coastal province on Saturday morning before weakening and heading inland to dump rain on Zimbabwe, eSwatini – formerly known as Swaziland – and South Africa.

At least six Malian soldiers have been killed in two “complex and simultaneous” attacks in Mali’s conflict-wracked centre, according to the military.
The coordinated assault took place at about 3am (03:00 GMT) on Sunday in the villages of Boulkessi and Mondoro in the Mopti region, near the country’s border with Burkina Faso.
Western Sahara rebels attack Morocco’s Guerguerat border
Western Sahara’s pro-independence Polisario Front has bombarded the Guerguerat buffer zone under Moroccan control in the far south of the desert territory in an attack Rabat described as part of a “propaganda war”.
“The Saharawi army launched four rockets in the direction of … Guerguerat,” on the border between Morocco and Mauritania, Saharawi press agency SPS said in a statement on Sunday, citing a military leader of the separatist Saharawi forces.

Face à la Russie, il faut arrêter le gazoduc Nord Stream 2
Editorial. La chancelière allemande Angela Merkel et l’Union européenne doivent se rendre à l’évidence. L’affaire Navalny et l’attitude du pouvoir russe exigent une politique plus claire des Européens, et notamment l’arrêt des travaux du gazoduc.
Il existe d’autres leviers, et notamment celui du gazoduc Nord Stream 2, projet de 10 milliards d’euros, achevé à 90 %, qui doit doubler les capacités d’acheminement de gaz russe vers l’Allemagne. Ce levier, c’est à Berlin de l’actionner, comme l’a diplomatiquement souligné dimanche le ministre français des affaires étrangères, Jean-Yves Le Drian, après avoir dénoncé la « dérive autoritaire très inquiétante » de Moscou. Moins diplomate, le Parlement européen a demandé jeudi l’arrêt immédiat du gazoduc à une majorité écrasante.

Escenas dramáticas que impactaron al país meses atrás cuando estalló la pandemia del coronavirus y ahora se repiten como una pesadilla que vuelve.
