Mexico's drug war leaves 39,000 unidentified bodies in its morgues

Mexico’s militarised crackdown on organised crime has left nearly 39,000 unidentified bodies in the country’s morgues, which are often unable to handle the volume of corpses brought in for autopsies.

A new investigation by the investigative NGO Quinto Elemento Labs found that an alarming number of people were simply buried in common graves without proper postmortems. Some were left in funeral homes and more than 2,500 bodies were given to medical schools.

Mexico’s militarised war on drugs has claimed nearly 300,000 lives over the past 14 years. Another 73,000 persons have gone missing – with their families often left to search for their loved ones unassisted by the authorities.

Qualcomm may be next to get permission to supply Huawei: analysts

Qualcomm may become the next company after Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) to obtain a license from the US government to continue supplying some products to Huawei, considering the US semiconductor maker's huge investment in lobbying and the negative impact on its revenue, but any approval may come after the US presidential election in November, analysts said.

As most chipmakers filed applications with the US Department of Commerce just ahead of the chip ban deadline, the chances that they could receive licenses prior to the US presidential election are "very slim," Fu predicted.

"But in the short term, the impact on Huawei's mobile business is limited as the company has stockpiled about half a year's worth of crucial chips," Fu said.

Xi's remarks at UN high-level meeting send 'another stern message opposing US unilateralism, hegemony'

Chinese President Xi Jinping's remarks at a high-level UN meeting on Monday, which stressed that "No country has the right to dominate global affairs, control the destiny of others, or keep advantages in development all to itself," sent a strong warning against US hegemony and bullying practices that threaten to upend the world order and stability, observers said on Tuesday.

In his speech at a high-level meeting to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations on Monday, Xi noted that the UN must stand firm for justice, uphold the rule of law, promote cooperation and focus on real action.

Cold War mentality, ideological lines or zero-sum games are no solution to a country's problems, still less an answer to mankind's common challenges, Xi noted.

Chinese COVID-19 vaccine producers speed up clinical trials

Xi reaffirms COVID-19 pledges at UN assembly

In the speech, Trump told the United Nations General Assembly to "hold China accountable for their actions" related to the coronavirus pandemic, and accused the Chinese government and the World Health Organization (WHO), which he said is virtually controlled by China, of falsely declaring that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission. On the same day, the US just topped 200,000 COVID-19 deaths in less than 8 months.

Xi stressed WHO's leading role in the global fight against COVID-19, and any attempt to politicize the COVID-19 pandemic or stigmatization must be rejected, which has been frequently mentioned by officials, scientists and experts from all over the world.

Gilles Paris y Carrie Nooten

TikTok’s Zero Hour: Haggling With Trump, Doubts in China and a Deal in Limbo

The weekend agreement to keep the app alive in the U.S.—an M&A deal like no other—remains uncertain

After months of maneuvering over the future of TikTok, it took a pair of 11th-hour phone calls with two of America’s most powerful executives to persuade President Trump to agree to a tentative deal.

Key to getting the president on board with the idea, which involved Oracle Corp. and Walmart Inc. taking stakes in a new TikTok based in the U.S., was a thinly sketched-out plan to create a $5 billion education fund, described by people involved as a gesture to placate Mr. Trump. The provision came so late that when it was announced, TikTok and its Chinese parent company weren’t aware it was part of the plan.
