America at Hunger’s Edge

In the pandemic economy, nearly one in eight households doesn’t have enough to eat. The lockdown, with its epic lines at food banks, has revealed what was hidden in plain sight: that the struggle to make food last long enough, and to get food that’s healthful — what experts call ‘food insecurity’ — is a persistent one for millions of Americans.

Merkel pressured to end Nord Stream 2 support after Navalny poisoning

The German Green party called on the chancellor to use the nearly completed infrastructure project to pressure the Kremlin into answering allegations over what Merkel called the “silencing” of Navalny with a novichok nerve reagent.“This openly attempted murder through the Kremlin’s mafia-like structures should not just worry us but needs to have real consequences,” said Katrin Göring-Eckardt, the co-chair of the Greens in the Bundestag.

“Nord Stream 2 is no longer something we can jointly pursue with Russia,” said the politician for the ecological party, currently second in polls to Merkel’s CDU and a likely contender for the next coalition government.

Calls to permanently halt the construction of the two 764-mile (1,230km) pipelines beneath the Baltic Sea, from the Narva Bay in Russia to the German town of Lubmin, were echoed within the chancellor’s own party.

India bans 118 Chinese apps, accusing companies of stealing data

The government said on Wednesday the apps – including the popular video game PUBG and other services provided by Chinese internet giant Tencent – promoted activities “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”.

Other apps targeted by India include games, online payment services, dating sites and even software to edit selfies. India and China, which fought a border war in 1962, have been embroiled in a series of deadly clashes and showdowns on their disputed Himalayan frontier in recent weeks.

India had already banned 59 Chinese apps – including the video-sharing platform TikTok – after the June battle. Another 47 were added in July. On top of banning the apps, India has frozen Chinese companies out of contracts including for its 5G mobile phone infrastructure and blocked Chinese goods at ports and customs posts.

Chinese mining firms in Zimbabwe pose threat to endangered species, say experts

Zhongxin Coal Mining Group and Afrochine Smelting have received permission from the government to begin environmental impact assessments for drilling, land clearance, road building and geological surveys at two proposed sites inside Hwange National Park, which is home to almost 10% of Africa’s remaining wild elephants.

If this leads to a new mine, conservationists warn it will shrink and disturb the habitat of many rare species including black rhino, pangolin and painted dogs, and devastate safari tourism, which is a vital source of income for local people. Hwange, which is the size of Belgium, boasts the largest diversity of mammals among the world’s national parks.

China's vaccine R&D is not in a nasty US rat race

US media outlet Politico published an article on Monday entitled, "What Happens If China Gets the Covid-19 Vaccine First?" The author, Elizabeth Ralph, raised a series of questions in it, including: what if China refuses to give a safe vaccine to the US and instead uses it as a bargaining chip to combat US power? What if the Trump administration, or a Biden administration, refuses to accept it? And will US' closest allies scratch their head and ask "is the United States really going to be there when China comes knocking" with a vaccine?

Even though China has underlined multiple times it will make its COVID-19 vaccine a global public good when it is ready, the US, which is witnessing record-breaking infection surges and obviously needs the vaccine more than China does, still shows this attitude: the significance of defeating China in the geopolitical game far outweighs its people's lives

But instead of focusing on developing its own vaccines, the US is smearing and hindering other countries' efforts. It groundlessly accuses Chinese hackers of seeking to steal COVID-19 vaccine research from the US, sanctions a Russian research institute that was developing coronavirus vaccine, and even attempted to buy a German firm to secure exclusive rights to a possible vaccine the company had been working on

PLA capable of handling US military provocations and threats

The PRC has the largest navy in the world, with an overall battle force of approximately 350 ships and submarines including over 130 major surface combatants. In comparison, the U.S. Navy's battle force is approximately 293 ships as of early 2020," says the Pentagon in its latest report on China's military power.

The number of navy ships that China has may look massive, but a large proportion of them are missile boats with displacements of only hundreds tons. They cannot really be considered as large surface ships. By comparison, US' warships mostly have a displacement capacity of more than 5,000 tons - so the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy's capability is actually inferior to that of the US Navy in this regard.

The US will keep increasing its military presence in the South China Sea, including holding more large-scale military exercises and intensifying close-up reconnaissance - especially around the Xisha and Nansha islands.

Moreover, the US will also prepare to form an "Asian NATO" as its next step to get more countries in the region involved to hold more joint military exercises as an anti-China alliance.

Nonetheless, the PLA is well prepared to carry out anti-aircraft carrier operations with multi-pronged approaches by the PLA Rocket Force, Navy and Air Force. China's DF-26 missiles can carry out precise strikes in the South China Sea with a range that can reach US military base on Guam. China has also reportedly deployed YJ-12 anti-ship missiles. This demonstrates that the PLA has sufficient ways to deal with any threats from US aircraft carriers off China's coast.

China ramps up vaccine globalization to ensure equitable distribution as US shuns efforts

China supports the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) and has been in close communication with the WHO and other initiators of the plan, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Wednesday. Chinese authorities and vaccine producers held a video conference on Tuesday with the WHO, Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to deliver a consensus to facilitate the global R&D and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, Hua said.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on August 24 more than 170 countries have expressed readiness to join the COVAX Facility, a World Health Organization (WHO) platform designed to ensure rapid, fair and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines deemed effective worldwide

With some Western countries consistently alleging Chinese vaccine research is part of a global influence campaign, China is under scrutiny in the race to develop a vaccine. Any safety problems that arise when the vaccine is available can shake the reputation of Chinese pharmaceutical companies and the whole industry, experts suggested. They said this uncertainty is aggravated considering the COVID-19 vaccine will be put into use much faster than in normal circumstance.

Also, technology transfers and the management of intellectual property are potential risks in the vaccines' usage abroad.

A report by Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy of University of Minnesota revealed the COVID19 pandemic will likely last 18 to 24 months, while 60 to 70 percent of the population may need to achieve herd immunity for halting the pandemic. A vaccine is believed to be one of the most imperative key to stop the spread.

China has pledged to offer the successful COVID-19 vaccine to at least 10 developing countries, but most of those partners are low-income countries, raising concerns that the high R&D costs cannot be recouped.

"Prices of vaccine supplied to low-income countries should only be barely higher than the cost," Tao Lina, a Shanghai-based immunological expert told the Global Times
