'Obvious provocation': China accuses US spy plane of entering no-fly zone

China has lodged “stern representations” with the United States, accusing it of sending a U-2 reconnaissance plane into a no-fly zone over Chinese live-fire military drills, further ratcheting up tensions between Beijing and Washington.

China has long denounced US surveillance activities, while the United States has complained of “unsafe” intercepts by Chinese aircraft. While such missions happen regularly, it is unusual for China to talk about them publicly.

China’s defence ministry said on Tuesday that the U-2 flew without permission over a no-fly zone in the northern military region where live fire drills were taking place, “seriously interfering in normal exercise activities”

UN security council rejects US attempt to extend Iran sanctions

America was rebuffed last week when 13 countries on the security council argued that the US had no legal right to “snap back” sanctions because it had already walked out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

On Tuesday, Indonesia – which this month holds the security council’s rotating presidency – said that no further action could be taken on the US request, because there was no consensus on the 15-nation body.

The announcement prompted an angry response from Kelly Craft, the US envoy to the UN, who said: “Let me just make it really, really clear: the Trump administration has no fear in standing in limited company on this matter. I only regret that other members of this council have lost their way and now find themselves standing in the company of terrorists.”

GLOBAL TIMES

Esper hints no hot war, but puts allies in quandary

On Monday, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper published an article in the Wall Street Journal titled, "The Pentagon is Prepared for China". Esper stressed threats from China's People's Liberation Army and called for US allies and partners to stand against China's "bullying" and defend the so-called free and open international system

Nonetheless, Esper did not explicitly say that he wants to win this competition with China through war. The Pentagon is not in favor of a hot war with China - although it keeps provoking China in the high seas. Esper noted that the US must "have a force that is able to compete, deter and win across all domains including air, land, sea, space and cyberspace." This sounds like an arms race, but has been the US strategy for a long time and is routine behavior for the major power competition. He probably was asking for more resources from the US government

With the "carrots" of ideology and rules-based order, the US is forcing its allies to pick a side. This bullying shows US anxiety, and the true intention is to use the "stick" of military deployment to get what it wants.

On August 14, US Special Presidential Envoy for Arms Control Marshall Billingslea told Japan's Nikkei that the US is in talks with its Asian allies to deploy midrange missiles to counter "the immediate threat" of China's nuclear arsenal. This week, Esper will head to Hawaii, Palau and Guam. In Guam, he is set to meet his Japanese counterpart. He will likely put pressure on Japan and talk about the deployment of midrange missiles.

This will put Japan in a difficult position because it needs China economically. But meanwhile, Japan has to pay heed to its security alliance with the US.

No need for ASEAN to take sides between China, US

Despite political tensions between the US and China that will likely continue for a while, there is no need for the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to take sides.

Senior Southeast Asian officials were keen to make the point on Tuesday during the 52nd ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting, which mainly discussed regional economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and its potential impacts.

"ASEAN is not a pushover ... We will make decisions in each of our national interests. We want good relations with the Chinese and with the Americans," Singapore's Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said during the meeting.

With active participation in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), ASEAN countries have emerged to become China's largest trading partner this year. And with globalization transitioning toward regionalization, this may just be the beginning of a new closeness between China and ASEAN economies when it comes to goods trading and technology cooperation.

Washington needs clear rules covering foreign firms

US-traded Chinese firms will either opt for a dual listing, or delist from the US and come back to their home markets as a result of an unfortunate trend gripping the US in which a clearly defined framework is still not in place for foreign companies to operate.

China is already leading the innovation pack for the next billion customers. That the US market is shutting the door on Chinese companies will only end up accelerating China's push for self-dependence in core technologies at the cost of American suppliers.

It's still without question that the US is home to top global exchanges where there are the greatest amount of liquidity, the largest access to global capital, and asset managers from around the world. For the foreseeable future, the US would remain the gold standard in terms of the place to list on. In this sense, China still needs to improve if it aims to become a globalized capital market platform.

Unfortunately, the US doesn't have a mature regime to govern data security, data privacy or the overall mechanism through which foreign technology companies are supposed to operate. Consequently, there have been ad hoc and unpredictable moves by the current US administration targeting certain companies - something that has obviously been going on for several years.

TikTok exemplifies a Chinese technology that couldn't be replicated by its competitors such as Facebook, because of the strength of its algorithm. It's this application that is now so addictive for consumers both in emerging and mature markets. It's the Chinese model that markets including Indonesia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Brazil are now aiming to replicate rather than Silicon Valley's.

US Republican convention: Melania calls for racial understanding, Pompeo speech sparks investigation

The Republican National Convention's second night on Tuesday saw a keynote speech made by first lady Melania Trump touting racial understanding as well as sympathy for coronavirus victims, while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo broke with tradition by making a controversial appearance.

Many of the night's speeches — which touched on topics including US relations with China, military wages and the economy under US President Donald Trump — contained misinformation and exaggerations.

Pompeo, who gave his address from Jerusalem, touted Trump's "America First" vision. "It may not have made him popular in every foreign capital, but it's worked," he said.

His taped appearance broke with decades of tradition of secretaries of state refraining from involving themselves in domestic politics. The appearance was so unusual, that the chairman of a Democrat-led House of Representatives subcommittee announced an investigation into whether Pompeo's appearance broke federal law and regulations.
