Hong Kong police given sweeping powers under new security law
Hong Kong police have been granted sweeping new powers, including the ability to conduct raids without a warrant and secretly monitor suspects, after controversial security laws were imposed on the city by the Chinese central government.
The powers allow for the confiscation of property related to national security offences, and allow senior police to order the takedown of online material they believe breaches the law. The city’s chief executive can grant police permission to intercept communications and conduct covert surveillance. Penalties include HKD$100,000 (£10,300) fines and up to two years in prison.
They also allow police to enter and search premises for evidence without a warrant “under exceptional circumstances”, to restrict people under investigation from leaving Hong Kong, and to demand information from foreign and Taiwanese political organisations and agents on their Hong Kong-related activities.
Global report: South Africa cases pass 200,000 as Kenya plans 'phased reopening'
South Africa’s coronavirus cases have passed 200,000, the highest total in Africa, as Kenya’s leadership announced that it was pressing on with plans to ease the country’s lockdown despite a steep increase in cases.
There are currently 205,721 cases and 3,310 deaths in South Africa, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker, which relies on official government data, making it the 15th worst-affected country worldwide.
Facebook and WhatsApp pause Hong Kong user data requests
Facebook and WhatsApp have said they have “paused” the processing of government requests for user data in Hong Kong. The encrypted messenger Telegram has also halted cooperation with law enforcement.
Facebook, followed soon afterwards. “We believe freedom of expression is a fundamental human right and support the right of people to express themselves without fear for their safety or other repercussions,” a spokesperson said.
The decision by the social networks to suspend law enforcement cooperation suggests they see themselves on a collision course with the Chinese state following the passage of the national security law.

China launches political policing task force: State media
China has launched a special task force to ramp up political policing to maintain social stability, according to the official Procuratorial Daily. It is latest move to rein in dissent over Beijing's handling of the coronavirus and protests in Hong Kong.
The task force should "crack down on all kinds of infiltration, subversion, sabotage, violent terrorist activities, ethnic separatist activities, and extreme religious activities," it said, citing undated notes from a meeting of the task force.
UK sanctions Saudis, Russians under new Magnitsky powers
The United Kingdom imposed economic sanctions on dozens of individuals and organisations from Russia, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, and North Korea under new British powers to punish human-rights offenders.

France's foreign minister said last week EU ministers would discuss Turkey on July 13 and said new sanctions on Ankara could be considered in addition to steps taken over Turkey's drilling in the Cyprus economic zone.
US Army soldier pleads not guilty in neo-Nazi attack plot
A United States Army private - who, according to federal prosecutors, confessed to his role in plotting a deadly attack on his own military unit - pleaded not guilty to charges he shared secret information about the unit with a neo-Nazi group.

Western tech companies surrender to geopolitics
Some US tech giants, although claiming they are "global" companies providing a level playing field for civic discussions, have once again proven, by their own actions, that they are, in nature, tools of US political interests. That Google, Facebook and Twitter, among other tech firms, pause their processing requests for user data from Hong Kong law-enforcement agencies is the smoking gun.
During Hong Kong's violent riots in 2019, the police in the city launched hotlines on WhatsApp, a messaging service platform under Facebook, in an attempt to collect information about radical rioters. Yet Facebook stepped in and cut off the hotlines less than 72 hours after their launch, a move which could be argued as indulging in violence.
About 10 years ago, some US diplomats made clear about using online tools to spread American-style democracy worldwide, help organize protests and even launch color revolutions overseas.
Twitter and Facebook are privately owned, US elites are binding them to US national interests forcefully and are sending an explicit signal: These platforms are destined to become conduits of Washington's interests.

China can deal with the US: scholars
Some people in both China and the US are worried that the trade war the US launched against China since 2018 will soon impact other areas - investment, education, science and technology, judicial matters, the Hong Kong and Xinjiang questions and more. They are concerned that it will eventually evolve into a new cold war between the two major powers.
China's defense policy is defensive rather than offensive in nature, with no intention of pushing the US out of Asia. However, from a practical point of view, there is a huge difference in the discourse system between the two countries. They cannot understand each other or trust each other. China now believes that the US is deliberately suppressing China in order to maintain its hegemony. No matter what China does and how it does, the US will continue to suppress China. The US, on the other hand, has regarded China as an imaginary enemy that wants to overtake the US to become the world's dominant power.
The main way for China to deal with the new cold war offensive by the US should be to promote China's economic development and a new type of globalization. China should focus on domestic economic development and further open up its own economy. It should also further promote cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative it has proposed.
Several American scholars have acknowledged in private letters that the term "Scold War" is interesting and reasonable. But they also said that the prospect of a cold war is mounting.

HSBC investing in China driven by interests, not politics
HSBC recently announced it plans to further boost investment in the Chinese mainland, despite the escalating number of critics it faces from Western politicians and media due to its support for the National Security Law for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). The company has signaled new investment of introducing demand-driven and customized wealth management and insurance services empowered by digital technologies. In interviews with the Global Times, two Chinese economists noted that the investment move was essentially driven by the firm's demand of business expansion in promising markets, rather than Western media's skewed notion of a political gesture to flatter China.
China has been steadily promoting its financial market's opening-up and offering preferential policies to foreign financial institutions. HSBC will not be ruled out of the market as long as it can abide by Chinese laws and regulations, including the recently established National Security Law for Hong Kong. In fact, it is a prerequisite for any multinational corporation to respect and comply with local laws.

Trump puso sanciones porque investigaban crímenes de sus tropas
La gravedad del problema institucional que ya implicaba el desconocimiento de Estados Unidos a la Corte Penal Internacional (CPI) se profundizó a fines de junio. La secuencia es así: el 11 de junio en respuesta a esa decisión de la CPI, Donald Trump emitió la orden ejecutiva 13928 para bloquear los bienes de algunos de sus integrantes. La réplica, un documento del mayor grupo de expertos independientes del sistema de derechos humanos de la ONU, no demoró. Se conoció el 25 de junio y considera la sanción “un ataque directo” a la independencia judicial del organismo que reúne a 123 naciones que adoptaron el estatuto de Roma en 1998.

La primera visita oficial del presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador a Washington para encontrarse con su homólogo de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, se enmarca en un intenso periodo de contrastes y vaivenes en la relación bilateral, donde se incluyen desde las amenazas a México de imposición de aranceles a sus exportaciones hasta el elogio del jefe de la Casa Blanca al mandatario mexicano por la colaboración en materia migratoria.

Apoyan el Tren Maya 64 comunidades indígenas, asegura comisario local
Puebla, Pue., Eleazar Ignacio Dzib Ek, comisario municipal de la localidad de Zoh Laguna, aseguró que 64 comunidades de los pueblos indígenas maya, tzeltal y chol de Calakmul, en el estado de Campeche, están en favor del Tren Maya, que construye el gobierno de la República, presidido por Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
El abogado maya fue entrevistado a propósito de una carta que dio a conocer hace unos días, en la que rechaza que las 64 comunidades sean representadas por el Consejo Regional Indígena y Popular de Xpujil (Cripx), que recientemente ganó un amparo en contra de la obra, con el argumento de que se violaron los procedimientos legales de consulta.

Denuncian embestida de oligarquías para arrebatar a Venezuela su independencia
El pueblo venezolano enfrenta actualmente una dura batalla para sostener su independencia, soberanía y libertad, ante el intento de las oligarquías de derrocar al régimen bolivariano.
En ello coincidieron los participantes en la conferencia virtual A 209 años, la lucha por la independencia continúa, organizada por la embajada de Venezuela en México y por la Coordinadora Mexicana de Solidaridad con Venezuela, la cual se desarrolló en el marco de las conmemoraciones por el 209 aniversario de la proclamación de independencia de esa nación, el 5 de julio de 1911.
