WASHINGTON — United States intelligence officers and Special Operations forces in Afghanistan alerted their superiors as early as January to a suspected Russian plot to pay bounties to the Taliban to kill American troops in Afghanistan, according to officials briefed on the matter. They believed at least one U.S. troop death was the result of the bounties, two of the officials said.

US to join summit on global green recovery from Covid-19 crisis
The US is to join with other major powers including China, India and the EU in formulating plans for a global green recovery from the coronavirus crisis, in the only major international summit on the climate emergency this year.
The idea of a green recovery to prevent a dangerous rebound in greenhouse gas emissions to above pre-Covid-19 levels has been gathering steam, but few governments have yet committed to plans.
UK criticised for ‘lacklustre’ response to Israel’s West Bank plans
The pressure follows confirmation by the shadow foreign secretary, Lisa Nandy, at the weekend that the British Labour party supported a ban on Israeli imports made in West Bank settlements if annexation of parts of the occupied Palestinian territories went ahead. Her proposal has been backed by the Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, and is likely to be raised in the Commons on Tuesday.
Talks may lead to end of blockade of Libyan oilfields
Forces loyal to the Libyan warlord Gen Khalifa Haftar may be willing to end their blockade of the country’s oilfields, opening the way for a ceasefire, as a result of talks between the UN, US, France and Egypt.
Under a deal under discussion for the past two weeks, the Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC) – one of the few institutions that has avoided a split between the country’s east and west – would restart production and exports, but the oil revenue would not be sent immediately to the Tripoli-based Central Bank of Libya, which Haftar’s eastern faction has accused of failing to hand over its fair share.

Trump denies knowledge of Russian bounties to kill US troops
President Donald Trump has angrily denied that he was briefed about reported Russian efforts to pay bounties to Taliban-linked fighters to kill American troops in Afghanistan, dismissing a New York Times report on the bounties.
"Nobody briefed or told me, @VP Pence, or Chief of Staff @MarkMeadows about the so-called attacks on our troops in Afghanistan by Russians," Trump wrote on social media on Sunday, calling on the newspaper to name its anonymous source.

Will coronavirus bring world to dark age?
According to the International Monetary Fund, global growth is projected at -4.9 percent in 2020. Moreover, the World Bank envisions a 5.2 percent contraction in global GDP in 2020. The world is faced with the largest recession since the World War II
There is still very limited knowledge on viruses. If all of humanity cannot be united, we may encounter the darkest age in the history of human civilization. So far, the global fight against the pandemic is confronting three obstacles.
First, anti-scientism. Some people do not trust medicine and tend to believe that freedom is more important than their own lives
Second, anti-globalism.Some countries' governments are not only complying with their rising domestic populism, they are actively adopting protectionist trade policies, restricting immigration and visas and withdrawing from multiple international organizations and agreements
Third, anti-cooperative actions. Behaviors like the US, such as publicly discrediting and attacking China, making China a scapegoat for its own mired response to COVID-19 in the US, announcing to cut off funding for the World Health Organization (WHO) - this has put more countries who are in need of the WHO in danger

World should get ready to weather a gloomier US economy in H2
Facing a raging "second wave" outbreak, there is sufficient reason to believe the US economy will be under great pressure in the second half of this year.
Due to a longstanding dispute over subsidies in the aviation industry, the Trump administration is reportedly weighing new tariffs on $3.1 billion of EU and British exports to the US.
Given what the US has done to its allies, it is conceivable that China will continue to be the main target of US political hardliners in the second half. As such, China needs to be vigilant and prepare for the spillover impact of a gloomier US economy in the second half.

O’Brien’s China speech full of political lies: Chinese FM
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks during a routine Monday press conference in response to questions about the US politician's speech.
The US president's national security advisor reportedly called the Communist Party of China a threat to the sovereignty and the economies of the US and its allies during his speech in the state of Arizona on Wednesday, among other hostile comments against China and the Party.
Zhao said that the US side has been indifferent to its severe domestic problems, and instead points fingers at other countries, aiming to shift the US people's attention in order to cover up its own problems, adding that the Chinese people and international community are very clear about this.

India's wishful thinking an illusion as PLA is prepared on all fronts
As senior Indian military officers are expecting a prolonged standoff in the China-India border region with the US reportedly voicing support for India, the Chinese military is demonstrating high military readiness on all fronts, as the intensive, simultaneous military exercises in the South China Sea, near Taiwan island and near the China-India border show India's wishful thinking of taking advantage of US support is merely an illusion, Chinese analysts said Sunday.
The US has long been hoping to play India as a card in its strategy to contain China, and it is now using India's domestic nationalists and hardliners in the China-India border tensions, Chinese analysts said.

Merkel and Macron talk coronavirus rescue fund
The French president is visiting Berlin ahead of key talks on a coronavirus recovery fund. EU leaders are still at odds over how financial help should be paid for.
A €750 billion ($840 billion) rescue plan is envisaged with grants offered by the European Commission that there would be no obligation to repay. Opposing that idea are the so-called "Frugal Four," Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden, who are opposed to any pooling of member states' debts.

Trump ouster will not heal US ties, says Germany's Maas
Germany's foreign minister said relations with Washington won't be boosted by Donald Trump leaving office. The US president has sunk transatlantic ties, most recently over defense spending and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
