Huawei Founder Slams U.S. Charges as ‘Politically Motivated

BEIJING — Ren Zhengfei, the founder of the Chinese technology giant Huawei, has accused the United States of having political motivations in leveling criminal charges against the company and his daughter, a top Huawei executive.

The comments, made in an interview with the BBC that was published Monday, mark a rhetorical escalation. Mr. Ren and the firm had previously declined to say much on the case, citing respect for the legal process. But he appears to be sharpening his language as a hearing nears on whether his daughter should be sent to the United States to stand trial.

“I object to what the U.S. has done,” Mr. Ren told the BBC. “This kind of politically motivated act is not acceptable.”

Late last month, the Justice Department unveiled sweeping chargesagainst Huawei and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, outlining yearslong efforts by the Chinese firm to steal American industrial secrets, obstruct a criminal investigation and evade economic sanctions against Iran.

Murders of Religious Minorities in India Go Unpunished, Report Finds

NEW DELHI — The Indian authorities have delayed investigating a wave of vigilante-style murders of religious minorities, with many instead working to justify the attacks or file charges against some of the victims’ families, according to a report released Tuesday by Human Rights Watch.

The 104-page report said that since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party was elected in 2014, attacks led by so-called cow protection groups have jumped sharply.

Between May 2015 and Dec. 2018, at least 44 people have been killed, Human Rights Watch found. Most of the victims were Muslims accused of storing beef or transporting cows for slaughter, a crime in most Indian states. Many Hindus, who form about 80 percent of India’s population, consider cows sacred.

Trump Delivers Blunt Warning to Venezuela Military Over Aid Impasse

MIAMI — President Trump on Monday delivered his sharpest warning yet to Venezuela’s military authorities in an increasingly tense showdown over that country’s crisis, proclaiming they would “lose everything” by remaining loyal to President Nicolás Maduro and refusing to allow in emergency aid stockpiled on the border.

Mr. Trump gave the warning in a speech denouncing Venezuela’s brand of socialism to an enthusiastic crowd in Miami that included many Americans of Venezuelan descent who have fled Venezuela or have relatives in the country, once Latin America’s wealthiest but now facing the greatest economic collapse in generations.

Brexit causing ‘palpable decline’ in UK influence at the UN

The report by the UK branch of the United Nations Association suggests Britain will lose political capital on the 15-member UN security council and the larger general assembly in New York because its campaigns will no longer be automatically aligned with those of the EU.

Based on more than 40 interviews, on and off the record, with current and previous UN-based diplomats, the report suggests the foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, will need to work harder to highlight a more value-based diplomacy, and a commitment to multilateralism, to retain the UK’s traction.

California leads 16-state lawsuit over Trump's emergency declaration

The lawsuit was filed on Monday in the US district court for the northern district of California after Trump invoked emergency powers on Friday when Congress declined his request for $5.7bn to help create his signature policy promise.

The legal challenges could slow Trump’s efforts to build the wall, which he says is needed to check illegal immigration and drug trafficking, and the case is likely to end up in the conservative-leaning US supreme court.

Bernie Sanders to run for US president in 2020

US senator launches second bid for White House, saying he was running to defeat 'pathological liar' Donald Trump.

This time around, Sanders has been among the leaders in opinion polls of prospective 2020 candidates, but he faces a field more heavily populated with other liberal progressives touting many of the same ideas he brought into the party mainstream.

The list of politicians seeking the Democratic Party's nomination already includes his fellow Senators Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren.

A number of other high-profile Democrats are still considering presidential bids, including former Vice President Joe Biden and former Texas Representative Beto O'Rourke.

Sixteen US states sue Trump over emergency wall declaration

President invoked emergency powers after Congress didn't fulfill request for $5.7bn to help build US-Mexico border wall.

Joining California in filing the lawsuit against the Republican president's administration are the attorneys general of Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Virginia.

Trump declared a national emergency after Congress declined to meet his request for $5.7bn to fulfil his 2016 election campaign promise of completing the wall.

The move allows the president to bypass Congress to use money from the Pentagon and other budgets.

The lawsuit against Trump on Monday argues he does not have the power to divert the funds because Congress is in charge of spending.

India appears to be defying every foreign policy goal relentlessly pursued by the US, stubbornly striking deals with nations Washington is trying to isolate from global trade.

Russia, Iran and now Venezuela – all among the top targets of Washington's aggressive rhetoric and sanctions – are also among the nations India has been refusing to turn its back on. The country's growing economy needs energy and its military needs hardware, and it is not allowing lucrative deals slip away to appease the superpower on the other side of the world.

‘Time for KKK to night ride again’: Alabama paper calls for return of the Klan to fight DC & taxes

An Alabama newspaper editor has called on the Ku Klux Klan to ride back into town to fight taxes and hang “socialist communists” using hemp ropes.

Goodloe Sutton, the publisher of the Democrat-Reporter newspaper in Linden, Alabama, called on the notorious white supremacist group to dust off their white hoods and “night ride again” because “Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats are plotting to raise taxes in Alabama.”

The publisher and owner of the newspaper slammed Democrats in the column published last week, warning, “This socialist-communist idealogy [sic] sounds good to the ignorant, the uneducated, and the simple-minded people.” “Seems like the Klan would be welcome to raid the gated communities up there,” he wrote.

EE.UU. cerca militarmente a Venezuela
