Iran’s Supreme Leader Vows Never to Give In to U.S. Sanctions

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, responding to what he called “vicious” United States government officials, vowed never to give in to American sanctions and “insults,” his official website reported on Wednesday.

Ayatollah Khamenei is the paramount decision maker in Iran and his assent is necessary for any major agreement or military action. His comments were made days after the Trump administration imposed new sanctions that targeted him specifically.

The remarks were the latest barrage in an escalating exchange of insults and threatsbetween the two countries. Last week, the United States pulled back at the last minute from a military strike in retaliation for the shooting down of an unmanned surveillance drone.

2 U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan in What Taliban Call an Ambush

KABUL, Afghanistan — Two United States soldiers were killed during a military operation in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, bringing to nine the total number of American military fatalities in the country this year.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said the two service members were killed in an ambush in eastern Wardak Province.

The deaths came just days before the next round of talks between the Taliban and the United States. The new round is scheduled to start on Saturday in Doha, the Qatari capital.

U.S. Tech Companies Sidestep a Trump Ban, to Keep Selling to Huawei

SHANGHAI — United States chip makers are still selling millions of dollars of products to Huawei despite a Trump administration ban on the sale of American technology to the Chinese telecommunications giant, according to four people with knowledge of the sales.

Industry leaders including Intel and Micron have found ways to avoid labeling goods as American-made, said the people, who spoke on the condition they not be named because they were not authorized to disclose the sales.

Goods produced by American companies overseas are not always considered American-made. The components began to flow to Huawei about three weeks ago, the people said.

Netanyahu Presses Superpowers to Remove Iranian Forces from Syria

JERUSALEM — Hosting an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday of the Russian, American and Israeli national security advisers, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel pressed for ridding Syria of all foreign forces, in particular Iranians and their proxies across Israel’s northern frontier.

With the eight-year Syrian civil war winding down, Mr. Netanyahu said, “I believe that there is a wider basis for cooperation between the three of us than many believe.”

This meeting, he said, the first of national security advisers from all three countries, provides “a real opportunity” to advance stability in the region, “and particularly in Syria.”

‘My Plan B Is Maybe My Plan A’: Trump Threatens New Tariffs on China

President Trump on Wednesday played down the importance of securing a trade deal with China as he prepared to meet with President Xi Jinping of China this weekend, saying he was ready to proceed with additional tariffs if negotiations between the countries failed to get back on track.

Mr. Trump said it was “possible” that a deal could ultimately be reached and that China was eager for an agreement. But he said he was prepared to impose tariffs on another $300 billion of Chinese products, on top of the 25 percent levy he has already placed on $250 billion of Chinese imports. Mr. Trump also indicated he might limit the next round of tariffs to just 10 percent.

Iran-US tensions: All the latest updates

Fears of war between the United States and Iran have intensified after a US drone was shot down by Iranian forces.

The incident marked the first direct Iranian-claimed attack on US assets and came amid heightened tensions, unleashed by US President Donald Trump's decision last year to withdraw from an international accord that curbed Tehran's nuclear programme.

The top Iranian cleric's website on Wednesday quoted Khamenei as calling the Trump administration "the most sinister" US government.

US pushes Bahrain economic plan in absence of Palestinians

Dubbed by US as the foundation for peace, Palestinians dismiss Bahrain workshop as pointless without political solution.

The Trump administration is seeking support for an economic plan it says will be a foundation for Israeli-Palestinian peace but which Palestinians and many others dismiss as pointless without a political solution.

Neither the Israeli nor Palestinian governments are attending the event.

In Gaza on Tuesday, Hamas and its rival Fatah movement of President Mahmoud Abbas convened a gathering of leaders and activists in a rare show of unity to voice their rejection of the Manama conference.

Saudi minister of state Mohammed Al-Sheikh told the panel that Kushner's plan was bolstered by the inclusion of the private sector as a similar proposal, relying heavily on state funding, had been attempted during the Oslo interim peace deals of the 1990s that eventually collapsed.
