Markets fall as U.S.-China tensions rise

Investors were bracing for President Trump to unveil measures aimed at China. The Trump administration has criticized Beijing’s recent move to strengthen its authority over Hong Kong, a semiautonomous Chinese city that enjoys special trade and financial relations with the United States. Any sharp move by the administration risks inviting retaliation from Beijing, worsening tensions between the world’s two biggest single economies.

UN peacekeepers: Numbers are going down

"Some members of the UN Security Council have the feeling that UN missions are too expensive and achieve too little," says Jaïr van der Lijn, a senior researcher at SIPRI, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, "which is why they want to reduce the budget for peacekeeping missions, with the Trump administration leading the way.”

US threat to deny student visas reminiscent of McCarthy era: FM

US President Donald Trump's threat to slap sanction on Chinese students in the US is brazen political persecution and racist, said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson who wondered if McCarthyism is making a comeback in the US.

Zhao's remarks were made after US media reported Thursday the White House plans to cancel visas for thousands of Chinese graduate students affiliated with Chinese universities with ties to the People's Liberation Army.

Zhao pointed out that the plan exposes the deep-rooted "Cold War" and zero-sum mentality that permeates the thinking of some Americans.

HK prepares for possible US countermeasures in response to national security law

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to make announcement on Friday concerning his new policies toward China, a counterstrike in response to the top Chinese legislator's passage of a draft decision to formulate and enact a national security law for the Hong Kong SAR. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that Hong Kong has lost "its autonomy" and no longer enjoys special treatment, which signaled that Washington is likely to impose punitive measures on trade and finance, ending the special trade ties between the US and the Chinese city which has been widely regarded as a major battleground for US-China tensions

The "one country, two systems" principle has also ensured advantages which won't be altered due to the new national security law, including free capital flows and a foreign exchange mechanism, the finance secretary added.

The national security law for Hong Kong will effectively prevent, stop and punish any act occurring in the city intended to split the country, subvert state power, or organize and carry out terrorist activities and other behaviors that seriously endanger national security, as well as activities of foreign and external forces to interfere in the affairs of the SAR, according to the top legislator.
