Hamas and Israel agree end to cross-border bombing in Gaza
After talks with Qatari envoy Mohammed al-Emadi, “an understanding was reached to rein in the latest escalation and end [Israeli] aggression against our people,” said the office of the Palestinian territory’s Gaza leader Yahya Sinwar.
In the latest escalation, Israel has bombed Gaza almost daily since 6 August, in response to airborne incendiary devices and, less frequently, rockets launched across the border.

Ground down by seven years in the role, Azevêdo quit the WTO on Friday a year early and has moved seamlessly to a job on the board of the US soft drinks company Pepsi. The first phase of the struggle to replace him ends on 7 September by which time it is thought the eight candidates – including the former UK international trade secretary Liam Fox – will have had enough time to make their pitches and the selection process begins.
The candidate who ticks the right boxes is Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former Nigerian finance minister with a reputation as a skilled political operator and fighter against corruption. Her strongest rival is the Kenyan trade expert Amina Mohamed, who has worked at the WTO. Either would be the first African and the first woman to hold the post.
Mexico’s candidate will probably be ruled out because a Latin American has just held the post. Fox is supported by the US, which according to one Geneva insider might be the kiss of death. The Moldovan, Saudi Arabian and Egyptian candidates lack an obvious power base. That leaves the South Korean trade minister, Yoo Myung-hee, who would be a good compromise candidate were it not for her country’s fraught relations with two big neighbours: China and Japan.

Hamas says deal reached to end escalation of violence with Israel
Hamas, the Palestinian group running the besieged Gaza Strip, has announced it has reached a Qatari-mediated deal to end the latest escalation of violence with Israel.
After talks with Qatari envoy Mohammed el-Emadi, "an understanding was reached to rein in the latest escalation and end [Israeli] aggression against our people", the office of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar said on Monday.
There was no immediate comment by Israel.
US steps up support for Taiwan to counter rising China pressure
The United States said on Monday that it was establishing a new bilateral economic dialogue with Taiwan, an initiative it said was aimed at strengthening ties with Taipei and supporting it in the face of increasing pressure from Beijing.
Washington also said it had declassified six security assurances given to Taiwan during the era of US President Ronald Reagan - a move analysts said appeared intended to show further support for Taipei.
Tension as India, China accuse each other of border violations
Tensions between India and China again have flared up again, with the nuclear-armed countries accusing each other of trying to seize territory across their disputed Himalayan border.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman has sacked two royals over corruption allegations and referred them to the anti-graft watchdog for an investigation, according to state media.
In a royal decree issued early on Tuesday, King Salman removed Prince Fahd bin Turki bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as commander of joint forces in the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen, and relieved his son Prince Abdulaziz bin Fahd of his post as deputy governor of al-Jouf region.

Chinese students petition against US university's termination of scholar program
Chinese students and scholars at the University of North Texas have launched an online petition after the school announced a "sudden and arbitrary" termination of the status of at least 15 visiting scholars without giving specific reasons, and urged the university to revoke the decision.
The school's hostility comes at a time of escalating China-US tensions. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an interview on Monday that President Donald Trump was weighing restrictions on Chinese students seeking to study in the US.

Rechazo de excancilleres latinoamericanos y exmiembros de la CIDH a la intervención de Almagro
Una decena de excancilleres de países latinoamericanos le exigieron al titular de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), Luis Almagro, que "se abstenga de intervenir en el proceso de selección" del secretario de la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH). Una operación contra Rafael Correa queda al desnudo
El exagente de Inteligencia de Ecuador, Raúl Chicaiza, confesó que fue presionado para involucrar al expresidente Rafael Correa en el caso del fallido secuestro del opositor Fernando Balda en 2012. Maduro indulta a más de cien políticos de la oposición
El presidente Nicolás Maduro firmó este lunes un decreto de indulto presidencial a 110 políticos de la oposición, entre los cuales se encuentran 23 diputados principales y 4 suplentes.
