RNC: Trump paints Biden as a 'radical' candidate and a danger to America
Against a backdrop of a global pandemic, heightened racial tensions, and widespread unemployment, Donald Trump framed his Democratic rival Joe Biden as the real danger to the country’s safety and economic welfare in his address to the Republican convention on Thursday.
Accepting the party’s presidential nomination ahead of November’s elections, Trump argued for more than an hour that his administration had accomplished everything it had set out to do and warned that a Biden presidency could be ruinous.

White supremacists and militias have infiltrated police across US, report says
In a timely new analysis, Michael German, a former FBI special agent who has written extensively on the ways that US law enforcement have failed to respond to far-right domestic terror threats, concludes that US law enforcement officials have been tied to racist militant activities in more than a dozen states since 2000, and hundreds of police officers have been caught posting racist and bigoted social media content.
The report notes that over the years, police links to militias and white supremacist groups have been uncovered in states including Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.
Police in Sacramento, California, in 2018 worked with neo-Nazis to pursue charges against anti-racist activists, including some who had been stabbed, according to records.

UN secretary general urges India to swiftly turn away from coal
“[Coal] spells stranded assets and makes no commercial sense – the coal business is going up in smoke,” he said. “India can become a true global superpower in the fight against climate change if it speeds up its shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy,” he said.
Narendra Modi’s government has been reluctant to make new commitments on the climate crisis, often taking a combative stance by suggesting that rich nations should shoulder responsibility for emissions while developing countries continue to develop using fossil fuels. The government has continued to promote new coal-fired power generation even as the price of renewable energy has tumbled.
Belarus protests: Putin ready to send Lukashenko military support
In remarks that will alarm EU leaders who have called on Lukashenko to negotiate with the opposition movement rather than try to crush it, Putin said he would send backup to Lukashenko if the standoff in Belarus escalated.
“[Lukashenko] asked me to form a certain reserve of law enforcement employees, and I have done so. But we also agreed that they would not be used unless the situation gets out of control,” Putin said in an interview for Russian state television.
Lukashenko has publicly asked Putin about the possibility of Russian military intervention in the country, painting the recent protests against his rule as part of a Nato plot to carve up Belarus. On Thursday he accused neighbouring countries of beginning a “hybrid war” against Belarus, claiming Poland had plans to take over a chunk of its territory. Last week Lukashenko put the military on full combat alert on Belarus’s western borders.

US says China's South China Sea missile launches threat to peace
The United States Department of Defense said on Thursday that Chinese test launches of ballistic missiles in the South China Sea were a threat to peace and security in the region.

Israel's top court orders removal of settler homes in West Bank
Israel's Supreme Court has ruled that a cluster of houses in a Jewish settlement outpost in the occupied West Bank was built on privately-owned Palestinian land and must therefore be removed.
Accepting a petition by Palestinian plaintiffs, Israel's top court on Thursday overturned a 2018 District Court ruling which had broken judicial ground by recognising the Mitzpe Kramim settlers' claim to the land, despite it being owned by Palestinians.

What’s next for Russia-Iran military partnership?
Russia’s dialogue with Iran has emerged as one of the most dynamic fronts of Moscow’s diplomacy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visited Moscow twice this summer — first in June and then in July — to discuss the future of the nuclear deal, as well as the coordinated response to the American campaign to extend the UN arms embargo on Tehran.
Against this backdrop, Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami's trip to the Army-2020 Military Forum taking place Aug. 23-29 is adding fuel to speculation about Moscow and Tehran ramping up military-technical cooperation once the Iran arms embargo expires Oct. 18. The American proposal to extend the restrictions was brought up in the UN Security Council but was rejected. Washington’s demand to use the so-called snapback mechanism to impose sanctions on Tehran also seems unlikely to yield results.
Libya's Tripoli authorities mandate 24-hour curfew to stem protests
Libya’s internationally recognized government has imposed a round-the-clock curfew to slow the spread of COVID-19 after ongoing anti-government protests turned violent over the weekend.
Protesters on Sunday took to the streets of Misrata, al-Zawiya and the capital, Tripoli, to denounce government corruption, shortages of water and electricity and deteriorating living conditions. The curfew in Tripoli and its suburbs, which took effect Wednesday night, was announced by the UN-backed Government of National Accord and is set to continue until Monday morning.
Ethiopia angered by Egypt’s alleged plan to establish military base in Somaliland

The reported Somaliland meeting was not acknowledged by Egyptian officials and the news emerged from a single Kenyan news site.
