Hong Kong: China’s security forces moving into the open
For years, China’s sprawling security apparatus worked in the shadows to stop threats to the ruling Communist Party. That may change with a new national security law that allows China to openly station security officials in Hong Kong to subdue opposition. And it will operate beyond the scrutiny of local laws and courts.

Global report: horror week for US as coronavirus records tumble
The past week has seen the United States break its own one-day case record four times, according data compiled by researchers at Johns Hopkins university.
Brazil, second only to the US in terms of number of cases and deaths, has almost 1.5 million confirmed infections, after it added 48,105 new cases on Thursday. Cases there stand at 1,496,858, with deaths at 61,884. Brazil has reported more than 40,000 daily cases at least three times in the past week.
Mexico’s coronavirus outbreak also rose by a record 6,741 confirmed cases and 679 deaths on Thursday, putting the country’s death toll at 29,189.
China's stock market closes at highest level in five years
Shares in Shanghai were boosted by news that the Caixin/Markit purchasing managers’ index had continued to recover from the trough reached in February, when the coronavirus lockdown was at its most severe.
The PMI rose from 55 in May to 58.4 in June, its highest reading since spring 2010, the period after the global financial crisis. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion, and analysts said the strong performance by China’s service sector, which accounts for about 60% of the economy, suggested that the new outbreak of Covid-19 in Beijing had little impact on the country’s recovery.
Heatwaves have become longer in most of the world since 1950s – study
The study found the escalation in heatwaves varied around the planet, with the Amazon, north-eastern Brazil, west Asia (including parts of the subcontinent and central Asia) and the Mediterranean all experiencing more rapid change than, for example, southern Australia and north Asia. The only inhabited region where there was not a trend was in the central United States.
Published in the journal Nature Communications, the study found a clear increasing trend in the total number of heatwave days within and across regions, and that heatwaves were getting longer across the past 70 years.

US tries to seize four Iranian tankers sailing towards Venezuela
US federal prosecutors are seeking to seize four tankers sailing towards Venezuela with gasoline supplied by Iran, the latest attempt to disrupt ever-closer trade ties between the two heavily-sanctioned anti-US allies.

India should wake up to Pompeo’s empty words
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday applauded India's ban on 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok. He hypocritically expressed concerns about India's national security by saying New Delhi was ensuring its own security, integrity, and sovereignty.
Acting like a cheerleader, the US has guaranteed India with no real investment, but inspiring lip-service. It will not benefit India's development if the country is captivated by empty talk.

UK can't back citizenship offer for HK residents
While UK companies have laid off more than 12,000 employees over the past few days, the British government is certain to add to rising employment crunch by reportedly offering a path to UK citizenship for up to 3 million Hong Kong residents.
The country has less than six months left before its transitional UK-EU trade agreement expires, and a new trade deal with the EU remains in the making, pointing to growing uncertainties over its trade prospect.
Caught in the predicament, the UK government's priority should be to revive economic activity and protect local jobs. Allowing 3 million Hong Kong residents to influx into UK would only undermine such economic efforts.
The country may assume it has some responsibility for Hong Kong, but that's just an illusion. Its colonial days were forever gone, and it would be a breach of its own position as well as international law if the UK government continues to interfere in the city's administration.

How EVFTA will impact China-Vietnam industrial chain?

According to dangcongsan.vn, right after the deal takes effect, more than 85.6 percent of tariff lines imposed on Vietnamese products, equivalent to 70.3 percent of Vietnam's export turnover to the EU, will be removed
Vietnam needs to hold a neutral view of its rising neighbor China. China's rise could be a precious development opportunity for Vietnam.

Turkey's strategic play in Libya to help reap economic gains
